2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sava's moved off campus anyway, but Angelo's isn't going anywhere...
No raisin bread for us 🙁

EDIT: Whoops, I lied, Seva was what moved. Anyway, I will still dream about Angelo's even if I'm not going to med school in Ann Arbor.

Don't scare me like that!! 😳

But hopefully we find delicious eateries in another city!!

Dang, got the "screening complete" status as well. They didn't even send me an e-mail!

Oh well. Good luck to the rest of y'all!

I think I can live off on the pizza house alone for a few months, hope things change later for you good luck!

+1, Same here. It sounds like a hold and probably the kiss of death. It's a shame, UM is my top choice, my alma mater, and I'm IS... oh well. So it goes.

IS doesn't mean much at UM - unfortunately.

sad to see this :/ judging by everyone's reactions, is the screening complete status more of a rejection than a hold?

Sigh. I also just got the "Application Screening Completed" (aka certain doom) status. Does anyone know if an applicant was eventually offered an interview from this status last year, or is that considered pretty much impossible?

Application Screening Completed
Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Your file remains "open" and eligible for additional reviews. Final decisions for all candidates will be made the first week in February. Thank you for your patience.

Today is a very sad sad day... 🙁

Everyone is acting like this notice is a rejection combined with a note saying you'll never amount to anything. Of course this is disappointing, but is this status truly a certain rejection? I would be very interested in finding this out. If it is, I'll certainly join the lamentations!

It's possible it's not the end for everyone who got the status, absolutely! For me it probably is, simply because I'm an OOS applicant with lower stats and by the time they get around to re-reviewing applications, there will be even fewer interview spots and I'm assuming they'll be even more selective at that point. Still, I'm glad I tried and there's definitely no harm in holding onto some hope!

Also got the application screening complete status, has anyone received an interview after getting this in the past?
I'm IS with LizzyM 76...such a bummer. It's my top choice

Like your optimism! But the fact that no one has gotten rejected from Umich yet means...well...lol, guess we'll see =P

IS doesn't mean much at UM - unfortunately.

Although UM is about 1:1 IS/OOS, they do consider serving the state of Michigan as a priority. When I attended a presentation led by Dr. Ruiz, he emphasized that they seek to recruit a good percentage of students that will stay in MI. But you're right, you can't get by with lower stats at UM when you're IS, that's for sure.

I got a notice about a change to my application status this morning. Never completed the secondary. The update reads:

"Your file has undergone an initial review. Additional review(s) will be conducted once your file is complete (receipt of Secondary Application, LORs, and fee). These reviews can take place any time between now and the end of February."

Is this essentially a rejection/hold/meaningless update, or is it a favorable sign? Should I submit the secondary? I heard they give II's without the secondary, so this is most likely a hold, right? My primary app transmitted to them in late July.

Sorry, it took me awhile to post this, because I spent sometime crying. It took me 8 years to get here. Not a single day I wasn't dreaming of this night.
To clarify, I got in!
WONDERFUL!!!! Many, many congratulations!

So last night I watched the clock change to 12 am. :nailbiting: The minutes started ticking by :eyebrow: until they tweeted that all the acceptance emails had been sent out, :meh: but no one on sdn got any emails. I decided it was time to give up and go to bed.

Woke up this morning to an email from Michigan 🙂 that looked like recruiting spam. 🙁 Why would they send me that right after not accepting me?? :annoyed: I was not about to torture myself by watching it, :nono: but I did want to know if I was wait-listed or rejected. 🤔 So I bit the bullet and looked at my status....
:wtf:Accepted!!?? :biglove:

But seriously, Michigan, thanks for the emotional roller coaster.
Hurrah for you!

Taking Gloria Gaynor (and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) as my inspiration: "Weren't you the one / Who tried to hurt me with good-bye? / Did you think I'd crumble?/ Did you think I'd lay down and die? / Oh, no! Not I! / I will survive. . ." Same letter, Sis. Let's show them our indomitable spirit!

Based on the number of people who got similar emails today, I think this can be interpreted as a soft rejection.

I don't think this a hold message. This is the same status I got when my application was incomplete, and they will update it to "File Complete - Under Review" once they review your completed file. If you look through this thread, people were getting these statuses in July as well. That being said, it is on the late side to send in your secondary (According to their admissions tracker, there are only about 150 total interviews left to offer as of 2 weeks ago (59 IS, 86 OOS spots)).

Either way, if it's one of your top choices, why not apply and see what happens?

THISSSS. So much angst to see a new e-mail only to find this.

What's odd is that they know applicants find this frustrating. From their twitter account last December:

We heard your feedback re: twitter chat e-mails & are not sending e-mails to applicants/spam but will hold twitter chat open to all tmrw!

I guess they feel it is worth the annoyance to get the word out on their twitter chats.

Edited to add: We could all tweet at them during the chat to say that we'd like the emails to stop. Or would that just show them that the emails work!? It's a Catch-22...

I found it slightly annoying even when I was only waiting for decisions. I also got random emails from others schools that were silently rejecting me and those emails weren't exactly something that bring positive emotions to me. I can only imagine how it must be like to receive some promotion email AFTER the rejection. SO SORRY.

I think it could just be that they either forgot or didn't manage to prevent the emails to be sent to applicants. Michigan has been experiencing some IT difficulties here and there this year. Many applicants had an hour of hell earlier last month during the admit eve. I'm sure it's not their intention to cause stress. It doesn't benefit them in anyway to irritates their applicants. There is a high chance that someone from the admission will be reading this on SDN and hopefully the issue will be solved.

I hope once we are all set on our professional career and look back years later, all of these hiccups will be humorous stories.

Seriously! You tell me you aren't going to offer me an interview, and then you have the gall to invite me to your twitter chat? Ridiculous.

Yeah, it's like being turned down for a job at a company, and then later receiving emails about how great it is to work there! I mean, they could argue that we're all still technically under consideration, but let's be real here...

My sense is that they've gotten carried away with the whole PR thing. "UMich is so progressive because they're so hip to social media and open about their process," yada yada yada. If they're really focusing on the applicants, they'd catch these things. Or maybe I'm just giving this more thought than it deserves.

I felt this way and do not envy you in the least. Just try to understand that the process is not only fickle, but rife with ... let's call them inequities and is not in any way a reflection on your personal worth, just what the school thinks is important. And the school can be quite silly.

Is anyone still "file complete - under review" here? Just curious if they gave everyone that "screening complete" status or not

I too have received the "Application Screening Complete - At this time we are not able to offer you an interview, but....." and the rest goes on. I was severely disappointed at first. I have other interviews, but I couldn't turn down a chance at this program if offered the opportunity.

I spoke with my pre-med advisor at my campus, she was actually 'HAPPY FOR ME'! When I asked why, it was because I was one of two people at my campus who had this notification. I guess the day I received it, everyone who applied from my campus had heard back too. Everyone else was rejected. She said, that students with lower stats are compared against each other not based on stats, but life experiences as well. It's one point in the application process they view things very holistically. There were several students I met who matriculated to UofM and had "poor" stats. Every single one of them were doing awesome in the program. She said not to give up hope and to focus on my other interviews instead. I'm doing just that. Don't let this upset you, take this as a neutral statement! It's not bad, but it is a "little" good. They didn't reject you from the program, you're just kind of in limbo. I'd rather be in limbo with still a shot, than have the possibility ripped out from under me. I attend a very small school, and we have at max 30 students who applied this year.

Quote from my advisor:
"If you have received that notification, it means that there was something that they like about your application. There was something there that made them think, how about we wait before rejection, and compare against larger groups. They are interested in you, but have a few concerns about something. There is always going to be a better applicant somewhere down the road, and that's just how Medical schools are. This is a neutral notification. Take it one day at a time, and continue to focus on the interviews that you have. It is ultimately good that you didn't receive a rejection. Things can happen in the blink of an eye, and it might not be according to your timeline, but it can still happen."

She's a remarkable woman. Love her to death. She will be at my wedding one day! lol

Basically what I'm saying is. KEEP YOUR HEADS UP GUYS!!! 🙂
EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU ARE STILL IN THE RUNNING WHILE A LOT OF APPLICANTS ARENT! BE EXCITED FOR THIS!!! 🙂

incredibly anxiously awaiting nov15...though im banking on decisions to be released nov14 because a few current med students thought it was reasonable to assume theyd do it a day early on friday instead of on a saturday....

fingers crossed and good luck to everyone at all stages of the process....during times like this when all we can do is sit around and wait, i try to keep reminding myself that all that matters is that we will eventually be doctors, one way or another. and thats what im really looking forward to!

interesting... did anyone on SDN get rejected?

Ugh, now you got my hopes up.

seems like so many people got this. i interpreted this along the lines of the ucsd hold, which is a tantamount to a rejection.

I don't mean to burst any bubbles (I got the same "Application Screening Complete" status as well...) but I think Michigan does their first formal rejections later in the season, not now. Some people (like me) interpreted this "Application Screening Complete" status as a rejection, which is why your advisor may have been led to believe that some people were "rejected" when in reality everyone got that same status. Just my two cents..

So just saw that the twitter said 22 new more admits to the med school come Friday;
So is that 22 admits total from interviews, 10/11, 10/18, 10/24, 10/31, 11/6==> assuming interviews occurred during each of these days? I don't think it's possible for there to have been so many interviews between 10/11-now (as that would be 180 applicants interviewed in the last month!) but I'm guessing the percentage of admits has gone down quite a bit from before 🙁

Sorry to psych anyone out, I hope we all end up at the place that's best for us 🙂

It's probably 22 out of one interview day. It is unlikely that they'll review all those over 100 students interviewed in the past month in one AEC meeting. Plus even if you are deferred, you still have chance to be admitted later. The waiting is certainly tough. Best of luck!

thats what i figured too...from last years tweets it seems that the admission rate post-interview is 50-55% around this time of year, so 22/180 is incredibly low. also keep in mind that the tweet says "22 MORE admitted"....thats probably from just one or two interview days (or so i hope!). I interviewed oct 31 and i remember someone saying that the following wednesday the AEC would meet, so my fate has presumably been sealed since nov 5 :nailbiting:

i can hardly wait for the email (or phone call!) but regardless of what happens good luck to everyone! we're all future doctors, thats what counts!

Here is a chart of the post-interview acceptance rate by interview date from last year. This is taken from their twitter account, where they listed exact percentages by interview date (except the first four, which were combined in pairs).

2cniflz.png

Their twitter has been more confusing than helpful this year. Telling us they admitted "another 22 candidates" is meaningless unless they tell us how many people were under consideration. If it was for one interview date, that would be a 61% acceptance rate, consistent with last year. If it is for two or more interview dates, it's an indicator that the process is different than last year.

Anyway, our waiting will end soon! Perhaps it's time to take our minds off of it, which I have not been doing, as you can see.

There's no reason to think the process is different than it was in previous years. 22/36 candidates is perfectly in line with historical acceptance numbers, and it sounds like they are reviewing one interview cohort at a time now, rather than in pairs as done earlier in the cycle.

Good luck to everyone! To those who aren't accepted, remember that something like 95% of UMich interviewees are accepted to at least one MD program.

This seems like a reasonable explanation to me. It would mean that they are no longer reporting outcomes on all of their executive meetings, since they last mentioned one taking place on 10/22. I guess we won't be able to update the chart with this year's data!

I interviewed on 10/17 and I remember them telling us explicitly that the executive meeting deciding our fates would be meeting on 11/5 or so.

Also, my interview day was unusual in that there were only 11 or so MD interviewees on 10/17 (and 12 MSTPs who I think they decide on separately?). This batch might be combining a couple interview days but still only be at 22 because there were fewer interviewees per day.
