2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not to break anyone's bubble, but in HS I got into an ivy league school and it turned out to be an "error" the day after my acceptance.
I'm scared my acceptance is too good to be true :/
I have no clue how to react b/c i'm in class right now.

Edit: I just sent that video link to 20 relatives to make sure I don't know I'm hallucinating.

Has anyone received a follow up to the email containing the acceptance video??? I'm still in "too good to be true" mode over here

Accepted but... I JUST WANNA SEE MY NAME ON IT! Hahaa

yeah... I went on this thread to check and see if it was a legit thing.... Not quite believing it myself.

Check your portal--my status says this:

Application status for [breakintheroof] (AMCAS #) as of 11/13/2014:
ACCEPTED

You guys might not know this, but on Oct 15th, there was an hour delay between what the admission said the emails were sent from what they were actually sent. There were so many disbelief going on, so eventhough my hand was stil refreshing my email and the portal every half a second like an automaton, my heart was already filled with lead and my hope vanished. When I get the video, I was PRETTY SURE that it was the recording of SOMEONE ELSE getting the acceptance in person...that feel...
the rest was history.

Also got the application screening complete status, has anyone received an interview after getting this in the past?
I'm IS with LizzyM 76...such a bummer. It's my top choice
Hey there! I'm currently an M1 at UM Med School. Do not give up guys! Last year, I completed my app by mid august. I was "under review" till end of October. Then my status changed to "application screening complete". I thought it was over yet kept updating the school with my grades and activities. In January, I was offered an interview for the LAST interview day. I interviewed and got accepted end of February and was offered a scholarship as well. Be patient and stay hopeful! As long as you are not rejected, you are still in consideration! 🙂

I don't mean to burst any bubbles (I got the same "Application Screening Complete" status as well...) but I think Michigan does their first formal rejections later in the season, not now. Some people (like me) interpreted this "Application Screening Complete" status as a rejection, which is why your advisor may have been led to believe that some people were "rejected" when in reality everyone got that same status. Just my two cents..

You're not bursting my bubble. Because I attend a small university, I know all of the students who applied this year. All of them. We all have classes together. They have received "formal" rejections from the university. There's always a cynic in the crowd. 😉

Did you send in an official transcript to update yout grades?

I sent updates probably 2 or 3 times to my status page. They were diverse including grades, research, volunteering, etc.. I do not really know how often would the school look at updates however I did send once a direct email to Director Ruiz (previous director of admissions) pointing out that I have made several updates to my status page. This is just my personal experience and does not necessarily reflect on what the school would prefer.
I did not send an official transcript. I just mentioned the courses I was taking with my grades and GPA particularly after the end of the fall semester.

Hi does anyone know about doing a dual degree of a md/jd at umich? I'm weighing the idea of doing that at umich or another school where the program is an integrated 6 year thing and they pay for a jd. Unfortunately all I know about this program At umich is that it's being developed but I haven't been able to find out anything else. Thanks! !

No news for me yet. Not good but not bad either. Interviewed in the beginning of Oct. Did anyone who interviewed at the same time got any response?

I did. I think you were supposed to get a status update ~a week ago no matter when you interviewed in October

Just got a personalized acceptance letter! Until 5 minutes ago, I was convinced my acceptance was a mistake/glitch in their system!
Congrats. I am sure by this time most of their acceptances have been given out. That leaves very slim chances for people like me who are still on the outside eager to get in. Sob.....

On the Tracker, does Month of App mean the month your primary was submitted, or your secondary?

me too 🙂 i really like how they take the time to talk about each of our specific achievements/attributes...another perfect example of how uniquely attentive and supportive this school seems to be.

Wait, so all our letters are really that different? I just thought one line was personalized; I thought the rest was generic. Haha don't want to post my letter on here in case it is specific 🙂 but that would be so cool if this were the case (that everything was personalized!).

no i think itd be a little much if every single letter was different, they probably work off a template but just that they took the time to write a few specific sentences was really a nice surprise and pretty unique

Don't know, just know he resigned,no details forthcoming. He was as true blue as they come, had worked here for at least a decade if not longer. He will be greatly missed.

However, his staff have been long time admission admin folks, so you new applicants will be in good hands. GO BLUE!!

The reason he was forced to resign was because he was having sex with undergrad students in exchange for admission. He should not be greatly missed, it is good that the weed is out of the admissions game.

That's an extremely egregious claim, and you just made your account today. If you are trolling, please stop; I believe this would be considered libel. If you honestly believe this to be true, please consider if SDN is the appropriate medium to discuss it.

I know it's true, I am not trolling or whatever that is, I view SDN from time to time but never commentes before until I saw that member praising Ruiz. I'm just warning that people should be aware of the type of school that Michigan is for sweeping it under the rug when his inappropriate acceptances went on for his entire time as director.

Was everyone who was not offered an interview put on hold, or were there some people who were straight-up rejected pre-interview?

For accepted students, do you mind posting stats or advice for those interested in UMich?

I would recommend checking out the well structured and informative admission website. If you still need more info, especially regarding the Stats, then read the previous posts on this thread. If you still have specific question to be answered, you can email/tweet/FB message/Call the admission office, or come back here, we'd love to help you. Right now your question is too general to answer.

Did anyone receive a "deferred decision until December"? Does anyone know what the stats on being accepted after a deferral is?

Any ideas for housing? I'm looking into the whitecoat area and cant find anything nice enough and within my price range.

the new munger graduate residence hall seems nice but a bit of a walk away from the med campus + no parking. other than that its perfect.

I thought Munger looked horrible from what I read online-- to many people cramped into one area and you don't choose your roommates, right? So it could be 7 random grad students sharing the same kitchen and floor with you.

I'm exploring housing options as well-- just looking for a place that I feel like would be "homely" and I don't feel as if the white coat area has a very homely feel at all; quite the opposite lol.

Dude Munger looks awesome. The rooms are huge, individual bath rooms as well. Fully furnished! Apparently there is a 'high probability' that you can select your own roommates as well, especially if they are in other graduate programs. Utilities/electricity/internet/TV all included in the price as well. Included fitness center is a big plus.

Anything that compares to this near whitecoat/closer to the medical school? The price range is 850-950 a month. Would love some input from current medical students. I looked on the housing website and nothing caught my eye that much at all!

I went to undergrad at UM. A lot of med students live in the Island Drive Apartments and Huron Towers. Both are a very short walk from the medical campus.

The new graduate residence is FAR from the medical school, although it looks nice. I don't know if I'd like living in an apartment with 7 people. Might as well rent a house off campus if you've got that many who want to live together.

Many students in AA rent houses off campus. The best area to look near the medical school is the Kerrytown/Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. You'll find some big, old houses that are divided into apartments as well as smaller apartment buildings. Among undergrads, it's known as a "hipster" neighborhood, but a lot of grad students and med students live there. A couple of the big property management companies that rent to students in town are Oxford and IPM (I rented from Oxford as an undergrad), but this website has a long list of the many property management companies who lease houses and apartments in the city. One word of warning, do not ever rent from Michigan Rental, LLC. I won't go into details about it, but let's just say it's known among students for being very bad. There are a number of lawsuits open against the company and its owner per this law firm's website found by a quick google search.

Any questions about AA, renting, or places to live in the city, feel free to PM me. Michigan gave me the "has been reviewed" status, so I'm still hoping for some love from my alma mater.

JPA178, you are awesome!!!

I think Island Drive/Medical Center Court apartments are kind of interesting from what I'm hearing b/c it doesn't look like a lot of people return to them after living there for one year.

In terms of Munger housing, I read online that when grad students were asked about whether or not they'd want to live there, 96% of them said no (I assure those who don't know A2-- Ann Arbor also known as Annie-- that about $1k for rent in an apartment where 3-7 people live is no steal at all).

Everyone should also remember that there are a bunch of buses everywhere and you can always take a car to campus I think after 4 PM free of charge. The buses run pretty dang regularly and A2 is also really into bike-use.

I'm sure they'll go over housing options at second look, but I know that a huge number of med students start out in the Island Drive/Nielson Square apartments. Some eventually move out to the cheaper Kerrytown neighborhoods, while many others stay. The Huron towers are very nice and aren't too inconvenient- they're five-minute walk from a university bus stop, and a 5 minute bus ride from the school. There is also the Northwood graduate student housing apartments owned by the university, but I don't think they're quite as popular. Probably a 15 minute bus ride to the school.
