2014-2015 University of Nebraska Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wanted to throw this out there, i have heard on good authority that they offer substantial scholarships to OOS'ers to help with the cost as they are fully aware of the inhibitory nature of their tuition. According to the adcom very few in the class attend without scholarships but one must ask about them.

This makes me feel a little better lol 🙂

Yes, when I interviewed there a couple years ago they said that any out of state students accepted into the program get a scholarship that makes their tuition the same as in-state...if I remember correctly.

It would be fun to meet up! I know so little about Omaha. Maybe Thursday night Nov 7 after the interview? If you aren't jetting around the country on interviews 🙂
Absolutely. Assuming I'm in town, I'd be more than happy to show you around.

Hi! Just a quick question, does everyone (or an extremely high number) get interviews to UNMC?! Tried to find some admission rates on interview offers but couldn't find any!

You should check MSAR they have this info for every school.

104/240/276 (matriculate/II/applied) in state so yeah just about every IS gets a II. Furthermore, OOS'ers with strong ties get an II if they work for it. 19/167/1279 OOS, supposedly there are few OOS acceptances due to high cost of tuition but what OOS'ers don't realize is the amount in scholarships they may receive.

Any EDP applicants hear anything yet?

Got my letter today. I was deferred to the general applicant pool, which is what I was expecting. Good luck to everyone!
What are your stats? I applied EDP and still no word...

I applied EDP before my MCAT score was released and once it was, I knew that it wasn't competitive for EDP. So, if you have not heard anything yet, then that's probably a good thing.

I got the background check email as well. Is that a for sure you're in? I'm a few states away so I might not get my letter for a couple of days but I want to know!

Well here is something from the AAC website:

"Certiphi Screening, Inc. will procure a background report on early decision program applicants at the point of acceptance and all other applicants at the point of acceptance after January 1st."

If I remember right from other threads, sometimes the background check arrives before the acceptance letter. I've talked to a few people and they've had the same thing happen. I'm guessing this is happening because of how the weekend at the end of the month worked out this year.

So exciting to hear of the first acceptances (at least that's what it sounds like...)!!! Ya'll gon' be doctas

Anybody interviewing on October 3rd?? I'd love to get breakfast before the interview or something. I might be staying at home (in Lincoln) and driving to Omaha or staying in Omaha, so I could possibly give rides to UNMC/breakfast. PM me if you're interested!

I'd so something light and that you're used to eating just for what it's worth! Wouldn't want to eat a big bowl of oatmeal and clear out the interview room lol.

Maybe cold cereal and fruit with an egg or two. Don't overdo it on coffee either!

Again, if anyone needs to talk about Omaha, I have lived here for 22 years.
Could arrange a place to stay at my house possibly, too. I live with my mom (yup and proud lol... i'm getting so much more loan paid off this way) so would have to ask her if she'd be okay with a stranger in the house 😉

I'm in Omaha so don't need a ride or anything, but I'll see you on Friday! 🙂

Can anyone comment on the format of the interview here? Is it just traditional one-on-one interviews?

this is based on my experience a couple years ago (2012), so I'm sure the people who have already interviewed can comment on this, but the interview is a one-on-one interview with someone on the AdCom. Some applicants had a current medical student in their interviews, too, but I just had one faculty member in mine. They are about 30 minutes or so.

Yep, it is still a traditional interview for about 30 minutes. Closed file and very conversational.

Echoing what others have said... it's no more than 30 minutes and has one or two people (AdCom or AdCom plus a med student). From my experience, and what I have heard from other's, all of the interviewers were fairly laid back and just wanted to get to know you. Obviously know why you want to go into medicine, what you've done to show that, what your plans are for the future, etc. But be yourself! It went by really fast.

Very laid back. I'm sure you got the email, but they even said you don't have to wear a suit. I talked with a few other people who have interviewed this cycle and only a couple people didn't have suits on. More women didn't than men FWIW.

Dang - I didn't get the "don't have to wear a suit" memo.

I mock interviewed with one of my old professors at UNO a year ago who had strong ties to UNMC and he explicitly said to not feed into the "laid back" feel of the interview. According to him, some of the interviewers are looking to see if you fall into this trap and that you should be aware not to treat the interview with a laid back approach. That's just what I was told and maybe others who have better information can conform this or not.

I would personally never NOT wear a suit, especially after how much I just paid for them for interviews lol. plus it's fun to get dressed up in a suit that fits you like a glove

I didn't get this email

Does anyone know how UNMC views smp's? I am currently on track to finish this semester with a 4.0 in my biomedical sciences masters program (knock on wood) but have a less than stellar GPA and MCAT. Interview is 11/7 and in state.

Interviewed today. Was told decisions will go out from December to March. Also, they said they do the big envelope/little envelope thing when notifying applicants of their acceptance/rejection.
What were your impressions of the school?

I really, really enjoy my time there! The people, hospital, and city were all great. I really hope I have a chance to matriculate there. Were there any specific questions you had about the school or interview day?

I'm just trying to figure out the general feel of the school. As an out-of-state applicant University of Nebraska feels like a dark horse to me. Was the interview fairly casual or stressful? Were there any negative aspects of your view of the school?

My interview was fairly casual. Obviously you can't be too casual in an medical school interview, but the overall feel of the interview was pretty light and there were laughs shared. (I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, of course, just stating my experience). Being an in-state student there really aren't many negative aspects that come to mind instantly. One thing I wish I would've asked more about during the interview day is the hands-on clinical experience M1s and M2s get. They showed us the Clinical Simulation Lab and talked about ICE, but I didn't get a good feel for what kind of hands-on clinical experience students get. This doesn't mean they don't, this is more me asking the others who have interviewed if they know more about this?

Back to your question though: UNMC is an awesome school and the interview day really only supported that. I will admit that navigating through the hospitals on campus can be confusing, but it's like the first day of undergrad. You get lost the first couple days but quickly find your way around.

There are many opportunities for clinical experience usually at free clinics. One in particular you won't find at other medical schools and that really give students a huge amount of freedom to practice doctoring skills.

Unless you have really high stats or some kind of tie to the state, you might not have too much luck applying here. I was rejected two days after submitting my secondary fee ($70) but then invited to interview a week after appealing the rejection (OOS applicants get a chance to appeal if they have any ties to the state that were not available on your application). However, you never know...

The day started off with a sort of welcome presentation about the school. We then toured the clinical simulation labs which I thought were pretty awesome. Very high tech in my opinion. After that we had a presentation about financial aid followed by med students answering questions and showing the applicants the hospital, library and anatomy lab. After the student tour you had your one-on-one 30 minute interview. Lunch was provided after the interview.

I haven't interviewed anywhere else, but from what I have heard about other schools, my interview seemed real laid back. Many laughs exchanged as RugbyRam mentioned. Although I knew it was supposed to be laid back, I was pretty nervous at the beginning. However, those nerves quickly went away once the interview got started.

Also, I don't know if you have ever been to Nebraska, but everyone is so nice! Like noticeably nice in my opinion... It was awesome.

There isn't really anything negative that I noticed. Maybe OOS tuition? But from what I have heard, no OOS really end up paying OOS tuition. I'm not sure though...

Hope this helps!

I actually talked to my interviewer about the free clinics. He said that MS1s and MS2s are in these clinics all the time.

The ICE seemed SO COOL! It sounds like so much fun. I haven't heard of that kind of program from other schools either.

yes, we are VERY nice.... and humble 😛

I'm excited for my interview...

anyone else interviewing 11/14? (kind of late.. but meh, better late than never)

If you get wait listed or rejected, CALL AND ASK FOR GIGI... she will give you an honest opinion on your chances, what to improve on, etc. seriously, she is great and her reputation is well-known here and elsewhere online for always being very helpful and honest with applicants.

I don't know how I feel about the ICE thing because my tour guide didn't make it seem very fun and helpful, so I got a weird vibe from it. But I guess I just need to look into it more on my own. I shouldn't let one opinion guide my own!

I am OOS, rejected, appealed, have an interview invite. Thrilled to visit Omaha. What do you mean about OOS not really paying the OOS tuition? Because they are able to get residency for tuition purposes or because there are scholarships available? The high cost of attendance is definitely the biggest (and only) con for the school for me right now.

Basically they give the top OOS people scholarships that cover the difference between IS and OOS tuition (this is for all four years). I think they said there are like 12-15 of these scholarships available. The OOS people who don't get the scholarship end up not matriculating (due to the very high OOS tuition), so virtually everyone who matriculates from OOS has the scholarship.

They told us there is 10 of these scholarships. But another applicant who I spoke to said that their interviewer said that no one ends up paying OOS tuition... So really, I have no idea.

Well good luck to everyone. I would highly suggest going even if the scholarship ends up to be a dead end. It's ranked very high in lots of different specialties and is a very high tech hospital - tons of positives. Great city too, regularly voted a great city (top ten at least) for raising a family, we also have the number 1 (or two. or three... whatever, depends on the source) zoo in the country, home of the men's college world series, etc.

If Warren Buffett lives in omaha, it must be pretty nice lol!!

Definitely my number 1 pick, even if I had to pay OOS tuition as a NE resident.

Interviewing on Friday 11/21!

Will anyone else be in the area that day/the weekend? If so, we should meet up!

Flying in from OOS and need a tour guide or two!
