2014-2015 University of Nevada Application Thread

Interviewed here this week as well. Only thing I can tell you is to try not to freak out too much about the MMIs. The examiners are all really nice, and it was actually a pretty cool process in comparison to a normal interview.

@Wolfpack93 @Vivalarevolution @moonwake @543prado10

Meant to ask a question here. What did you all put for the experiences description? Did you just list what you had in AMCAS? Did you write something additional? I feel like I am missing something here.

I called about that part and was told it is meant for any new experiences that weren't listed already on my AMCAS. So I wrote "no new experiences" there or something of the sort and moved on. Hope that helps 🙂

Has anyone interviewed at the Las Vegas location? And elaborate some more on their interview day?

I'm trying to book a flight to Reno. Did the interview run the majority of the day? Didn't know if I should fly out that night or the next day

I was in the morning group so the interview ran until about 2pm. The afternoon started their MMIs around then so the latest you'll get out is around 4p probably depending on your group

Hi guys, I interviewed as part of the early admissions process on 9/15 and got my acceptance email on 10/1. If anyone has any questions let me know. (IS, 3.47/34 and post-bacc student). I hope to hear from some other people who will be in the class of 2019. 🙂

It seems like Nevada moves pretty quickly post-secondary. Do they issue rejections? Do they send a complete email?

Congrats! Were you notified by email?

Interviewing in two days. I have no idea what to expect. You guys are saying the MMI's are pretty laid back. Were they all questions/scenarios? My worst nightmare is they have some mini-mcat test you do as one of the scenarios (I've heard of some schools doing that).

@moonwake Good luck! A mini-MCAT sounds absolutely terrible. I really hope that is not the case.

May I ask if you were given any scheduling information? I've been all over the portal and can't find when/where I should arrive for my interview.

I'm not sure anyone can answer that and not be in violation of the confidentiality agreement... More over, there is no way of knowing if the stations you will go through are going to be the same as other interview days experience. That being said from my experience if you have done an MMI or read what they are generally like I think you won't be surprised by anything at UNSOM's.

They will send you something in the email a few days prior to your interview (or at least should). On the day I interviewed there was a morning (8am I believe) and afternoon session (10am?). The morning group did the MMI first thing (after a brief description of what MMI was and a little information on a couple of the stations), then everyone was there (both groups) for all the info talking and a tour (Reno campus). Then morning folks took off and afternoon folks did MMI stuff...

Sorry. For some reason I thought the specifics were the only things tied by the confidentiality agreement. But then again who knows the limits to that- better be safe than sorry. I know research is a huge part of UNSOM but is a research project mandatory (just out of curiosity)?

IS, later AMCAS submission. Received secondary 10/23/2014. Submitted secondary 10/24/2014. Invited for interview 11/4/2014. Interview on 11/24/2014.
UNR was the first to give me an answer related to my secondary and only one so far.

Good luck to the rest of you! I've lived in Reno for a few years and would be happy to answer questions if you guys have any (where to stay, where to eat, traffic, parking, etc.).

Congratulations! Silver Legacy or Circus Circus? Those are where I am considering staying.

Thanks!

The Silver Legacy is a nicer casino, but they're adjacent casinos connected by an above the street walkway lined with restaurants and whatnot so it probably doesn't matter much unless you care what your room looks like. You're in the big city Reno! It would be a terrible waste if you spent much time in your room. I kid, but there is plenty to do in this town.

Circus Circus does have the charming feature of smelling like candied popcorn as well. There's also kids running around in this carnival thing with free circus acts.

The Silver Legacy parking garage also makes me nervous, tight corners kind of like some narrow, mountain road in a James Bond movie. I'm rarely uncomfortable driving, but I don't even like negotiating that garage in a compact sedan. You can always park at the Circus Circus garage or the Eldorado garage and just walk over to the Silver Legacy. It's a block away either way.

Circus Circus is a block closer to the campus if are the type to have trouble getting up. It's a bit of a slightly uphill walk to the medical school either way. I'd say 20-25 minutes if you're walking with a little bit of pace.

Thanks! Yep, Silver Legacy it is. (Edited to add that I learned how to drive in LA so scary parking garages are not unfamiliar to me.) What fun activities do you suggest for a one-year-old on a Sunday? My only exposure to Reno has been passing through and casinos. Neither of which are much fun for a baby I'm hoping to tire out the day before my interview. 🙂

I am so excited about this opportunity! Nevada is one of my top choices so far.

OOS and still haven't heard a word! No rejection or secondary or anything :/

Thanks, you too! I am in Utah. And I submitted my primary application the first day possible. It's been a long wait haha

I don't have children so I'm not totally sure what to do with them for a day. There is some nice hiking that's accessible easily from main roads so if the baby is walking you could give a little nature exposure. There are partially tame horses by the Huffaker Hills, but they're kind of malnourished and seem dependent on food from people so they're a little depressing. There are some nice parks. The downtown area by the Truckee River is pleasant and is lined by shops and restaurants. It does have a bit of a teenagers with problems and people with very little means going on as well.

Anyone with kids want to help out Leslie here?

Auto museum is pretty rad, baby might not appreciate it (depending on what exactly "baby" means), also the museum of art is a cool building and has interesting shows going on sometimes. Parts of the river are quite nice. Some of the main (lower) campus is quite pretty, original campus is based on jefferson's plans for the university of Virginia or some such thing.

If you have all/most of a day obviously truckee/donner and Tahoe are rad or Virginia city is kinda interesting I suppose.

Sorry, hard to think of things without knowing how old the baby is and then even still ad I don't really know what babies enjoy...

This is great, thanks! He's almost a year old. The auto museum and art museum sound perfect. He loves to look around at interesting things.

I'm looking forward to taking a look at the campus myself, so I'm sure we could do that together, too.

I had my first MMI this week and now I'm a bit nervous for the MMI at Nevada. Do they have a copy of the prompt in the room? Or do you have to remember it?

People might be hesitant to answer this just because UNSOM has strict rules about what you can and can not tell about the interview process. I think I'm safe in saying its pretty much the same as your standard MMI, and they give you a lot of the info you need a few days before your interview by email. Sorry I can't be of more help.

No you are very helpful! Thank you. I did not mean to ask an inappropriate question. 🙂

Rejected as OOS today pre secondary, for the second time. Next!

So, I interviewed at UNR on 11/24/2014. It was my first medical school interview. My overall impression is that UNSOM (University of Nevada School of Medicine) is a remarkably friendly, medical institution. While the MMIs were not trivial, the admissions staff worked extremely hard to be nice, to calm us down and to facilitate the best performance that we applicants could muster. There's something sort of humble about UNSOM that is quite charming. I also get the strong sense that, once admitted, UNSOM really wants every one of its students to succeed. I do not expect other medical schools to be this friendly or helpful on application day or throughout medical education.

Standing in front of my first door for the MMI, I had a flashback to my when I went skydiving and was looking at a doorway on which the other side lay the abyss. Very intense!

I've been fortunate enough to interact with many of the medical students (by volunteering at their excellent, free, medical student run health clinic, The Student Outreach Clinic). The students here are very happy from what I can tell. All of them indicate that medical school is very challenging (that's a plus for me). The class size is quite small and the faculty student ratio is pretty low. Given its diverse match list, I get the sense that students are able to generally get the match placements that they want, at least in specialty, possibly not at their dream location. All of these features, to me, make UNSOM a very attractive medical school option.

I would love to tell you guys in detail about the interview process, but not only does the confidentiality agreement preclude doing so, the Admissions Coordinator herself was quite clear with me that she did not want any aspect of the process communicated. To be safe, that included what was sent to applicants about the agenda of the interview day and the breakdown of the MMI interviews.

Good luck to all applying!

We were there on the same day! I agree with your assessment and I appreciate this post since I am OOS and don't have any experience beyond my interview day.

Oh, haha, nice! I was in the second group of 10, arrived last.

I just withdrew my application (post-interview). Good luck to those still waiting for a decision.

Would somebody mind sharing what hotel they stayed in?

Did they give you shuttle service to the University?
