Currently on the wait list but submitted application for the new cycle. Good luck everyone!

Good luck everybody 🙂 Here's hoping for some love from UNC!

UNC still haven't told me jack yet - at least send me a rejection letter from last cycle! Although I already put in my primaries for UNC this cycle...hope that doesn't confuse them too much :hardy:

No shame in that. Wish you the best of luck as well!

I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about how UNC views (IS) re-applicants. I was under the impression that they are more selective with regards towards handing out the interviews, but are there any factors that may be detrimental towards re-applicants?

Neurotic fears of rejection? haha. Just a thought. I have no clue, I am a first-time applicant, but I think if you improved anything in terms of more coursework, medical experience, or service-work you should have a good shot.

Just accepted off the WL today for the previous cycle. UNC is a great school and they look at more than the number. I have an average GPA with a low MCAT (quite a few points below 30). Good luck with this cycle everyone! Keep your heads up and fingers crossed!
Congrats!! I'm so happy for you.

Congratulations! Are you a NC resident?

They love them. if you get an interview the chance of getting in are very good. If you have improved (not just resubmitted with a similar app) you are very likely to get in. Specifically the best thing you can do is have a post-rejection meeting with them (at this point this is too late), listen to what they say, and do exactly that. If you have a very similar app to last cycle, I would not apply again this year, but take time off to improve your app.

Do they only offer post-rejection meetings to those they interview?

And along that point - they should give out a formal rejection letter/email if they didn't invite to interview right (don't all med schools)?

Hum not sure. You could always call and see. If you are OOS I would assume its just unlucky. If you are IS I would try to get some feedback for sure. Even if they won't do a formal meeting, they might be able to give you something! If you are IS without an interview you may need to really change something significant.

First-time, IS applicant here. Good luck, y'all!

Thank you for the response! I believe they only grant post-rejection meetings with people who not only interviewed with them, but were also denied acceptance or waitlist positions at any other school. I actually did have a post-rejection meeting with someone from the department about two months ago, and he seemed fairly encouraging and optimistic towards my reapplication chances when I told him what I felt my weaknesses were initially and what I've done since to improve on them.

Yup - IS w/o interview - I had a pretty average PS and a downward trend in college (UNC as well, I heard they relatively lean away from their own grads) at the time. I pulled up my GPA last year as a senior and changed up my PS quite a bit...so hoping the best for this cycle!

20/20 hindsight tell me that I probably should walked 5 minutes from my classes to their offices to check my status o.0

Applying OOS, but went to undergrad at UNC Asheville. Hopefully they see that as a tie to NC. I love it there!

Question: I'm a reapplicant, but not to this school. Do you think they will look at that negatively? I do mention reapplication in my AMCAS essay, so they will know about it.

Applying IS here as well!

Does anyone know if UNC screens before sending out secondaries? I'm not taking the MCAT for a few weeks so I'm wondering if it would be wise to list UNC when I submit my primaries before getting my scores back.

Good luck everyone!

I don't believe UNC will consider you a reapplicant if you never applied to UNC before, since they've never had a chance to observe your application and to observe any changes you've made since the last time you applied.

UNC screens very heavily before sending secondaries. If you get a secondary from UNC and are a first time IS applicant you have a very good chance of getting an interview invite. It's up to you about the scores. How have you been doing on practice tests?

Thanks for the reply. That's good to know!

I will be taking my first FL this week, so I'll be able to get a better sense of where I stand in a few days. I'm a non-trad so it's taken me a bit longer to get a handle on the content. I'm just hoping the score will be high enough not to get screened out by UNC. :xf:

Reapplicant here. Was interviewed last year but not offered a spot as an IS...after graduating from grad school, I had to stay in Florida and am now reapplying as an OOS. Anyone know how this will affect my app? I lived in NC my whole life until my year in grad school and the current year. All my family is still back there. Thanks!

If you're applying as an OOS this year, then that would probably throw you into the OOS applicant pool. I imagine that it would be a lot more competitive to get an interview now.

I would try to find absolutely any way to be considered an in-state app. If you can change it on AMCAS do it. I was informed that they generally consider you whichever state you consider yourself (within reason). Being OOS is absolutely decreasing your chances significantly and if you didn't get in last year, unless you have improved a whole whole lot it is unlikely they will accept you in an even more competitive atmosphere (OOS) if you weren't accepted as an IS

Are you still a dependent? If you are, it should be easy to change/update residency to NC with tax records from your family. Big difference in your app, esp at UNC (or ECU if you applied there also)

Currently on the wait list as IS. Reapplying with a new MCAT score that's 5 points higher and a few other improvements, hoping for better luck this time.

Anyone gotten a secondary yet? Especially any reapplicants?

got an email saying my application was received. no secondary here.

So they screen out OOS less than 33 MCAT.
Welp, bye North Carolina.

Just got an email noting the receipt of my application. Sent me to this link --> http://www.med.unc.edu/admit/files/PreliminaryAppLetter.doc/view
"Supplemental applications will typically be sent to qualified out-of-state applicants who meet the following academic criteria: science GPA (or BCPM) of >3.49; cumulative GPA of >3.59 and a total MCAT score of 33 or greater."
You could have easily found this info on their admissions website before deciding to apply. UNC has a very heavy IS bias. I've heard they give 50% of first-time IS applicants interviews.

I actually think it's higher. They give out around 50% of IS applicants interviews, which includes the re-applicants, and I know that they screen much more heavily towards re-applicants.

Has anyone heard back from UNC besides that initial email last week? This is my top choice school, but they're slower on the uptake with sending out secondaries than most of the other schools I applied to lol.

Damn same here... I knew they had a heavy IS bias, but didn't know they screened that hard. Sucks, but oh well.
Yeah I got an email that they would send me another email on whether I would receive a supplemental.... It's okay; not exactly holding my breath...by gpa/mcat standards, I'd be screened out....it's okay if I do...I guess we will see what happens.

I know someone who was below the standards and still got a secondary and interview. I'm holding out hope too.

I believe that if you're a first time IS applicant, you pretty much automatically will get a secondary and interview.

Yes, I know for a fact I'm getting screened out. It'd be a miracle if I didn't, but I have other schools that have sent me secondaries so it's okay if this school doesn't give me a chance. It would've been nice though lol
