2014-2015 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
"...we only award waivers to those with the greatest need."

Unless FAP shares my financials with them, I'm not sure how they determined how "great" my need was. I just logged on and paid the stinkin' $68.

I was wondering the same thing. But there's a part of AMCAS that asks how much you contributed to school and family income during early life. Maybe they look at that.

General question: does UNC have an app status page after submitting secondary? Or do we just hold tight and wait for an e-mail (that may never come)?

Do you guys think its worth applying here (in my case)? GPA is high (3.9+) but MCAT is on the lower end (30).... and I'm OOS.

Their website says competitive OOS applicants have 33+ MCAT...

No. @Ace Khalifa mentioned the 33 MCAT... this is what it says on their website: "Supplemental applications will typically be sent to qualified out-of-state applicants who meet the following academic criteria: science GPA (or BCPM) of >3.49; cumulative GPA of >3.59 and a total MCAT score of 33 or greater." You could call and ask in what situation are they not "typically" sent to OOS applicants so that you don't waste $36.

Thank you both! I finally found the part on the website that said that!

Wondering this too. Is there any way to guarantee that I'm complete?

Recently noticed this popping up at the payment page. Don't believe there is a status page though.

If you would like to be considered for a supplemental fee waiver you will need to provide us with a copy of your FAP approval from AMCAS. Your name and your AMCAS ID will need to be on the document. Ms. Reid will send you an email which will indicate the status of your request. PLEASE BE PATIENT!Do not send another email requesting a fee waiver, as it takes a time to review all of the requests. Also note that being a participant in the AMCAS FAP does not mean you will automatically be granted a fee waiver. Those demonstrating the greatest need will typically be granted a fee waiver.

Could someone post the prompts and word limits plz? 🙂

Section F: Prompts (Applicants for the MD and MD/PhD Program)
*Respond to each prompt in no more than 1-2 paragraphs (150 words total).

Prompt 1:
We have all tried something and failed, whether it was something big or something small. Describe a situation or an experience you had when you realized
that you were not up to the task, and tell us what life-lessons you learned from this experience.
Prompt 2: Much of medical school education is based on team-learning. What important activity have you accomplished that required a team approach, what
was your role in the outcome, and what did you learn from it?
Prompt 3: Give an example of how you have made a difference in someone’s life -- whether it is a patient, friend, classmate, or a family member and explain what
this experience taught you about yourself.
Section G: Research Interests (MD/PhD Applicants Only)
Please indicate your current top 3 research interests from the list below. You may add a 4th interest not provided on the list if you feel it will help us better understand
you. You can do this in the text box titled "other" below. None of these choices will commit you to specific PhD field of study.

Section H: Re-applicants (MD and/or MD/PhD Applicants)
Prompt 1: Explain why you have decided to reapply. Please respond in no more than 1-2 paragraphs (150 words total).

same here in the IS reapp boat!....and I've already received interviews from 2 schools 🙁

EDIT: sad about UNC, not the other schools =)
Same. I also already have one interview, and I'm really hoping to be able to wrap up the secondaries soon. Glad to know that I'm not alone. I hope we all do well this cycle!

Hey should I expect a complete email from the secondary or is there a site I can check my application status? My original supplemental application site doesn't have any status information I can find.

THANKS!!

Any re-applicant IS with secondary invites?

IS Reapplicant here as well. Only applying at UNC and one other school. Haven't yet received secondary. Congrats on your other interviews!

General consensus from reading previous posts in this thread is that you will not receive any form of confirmation.

Edit: However, I received a complete email for the MD/PhD program.

For what it's worth, I was invited to a secondary s/cGPA~ 3.75 MCAT 32 OOS.
So can we take this to assume they will send out secondaries if you're barely below their approximate cutoffs? If so, this is good news!

I'm OOS, 3.67 cGPA, 3.88 sGPA, 40 MCAT, but no secondary.
What gives, UNC?

IS re-app too - no secondary yet. Anyone in the same boat that already got a secondary? perhaps after orientation...

Decided actually to focus on the research and apply to graduate school this year. Good luck guys. I hope you all get what you're after!

I still havent even gotten the secondary hmm. Im is too... not that that means I definitely get one...

When were you guys complete?
Submitted 7/23, IS, 3.7/36, WUSTL 2014, no research, lots of volunteering and service, scheduled interview for 9/10.
