2014-2015 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know how to update the UNC application?
I'm thankful for all of your responses : )

And go Butler...
You can't on the supplemental application website....and they won't accept update letters via email either. That's what they told us on my interview day. The only time you can "update" them is during your interview, if you make it that far.

I haven't received a secondary yet. Completed initial application mid september. Should I contact admissions? Or is there no hope? 3.5 science/30 mcat Non-traditional (older) student. Thanks in advance!

UNC does a pretty heavy screen for secondaries. Especially for out of state applicants.
They specifically state on their admissions website " Out-of-State Applicants: Supplemental applications will be sent to qualified out-of-state applicants who meet our criteria. Because the majority of each matriculating class must be filled by North Carolina residents, the criterion for supplemental applications is more competitive for out-of-state applicants. Supplemental applications will typically be sent to qualified out-of-state applicants who meet the following academic criteria: science GPA (or BCPM) of >3.49; cumulative GPA of >3.59 and a total MCAT score of 33 or greater. Once we receive the supplemental application and the required fee, all materials will be reviewed and the applicant will then be considered for an interview. Those applicants selected to be interviewed will be contacted via email for scheduling their interviews."

Just a heads up. I have heard of people below these thresholds getting an secondary (or even II), but they are the exception, not the rule (as I understand it).

Has anyone heard anything about the residency form? I've emailed and haven't gotten a response yet.

Had the same issue still today when I tried. Emailed them as well.
From Ms. Reid in the Admissions Office:

"I am sorry that you are having trouble. Close your browser and then reopen it and if you are still having trouble please send an email to Mr. Wagner at: [email protected]. If you are half-way through filling out the application you may want to print what you have because Mr. Wagner may have delete your current application and send you another invitation to fill out the form, and this way you will have the information you need to start again."

FYI: I shot him an email; I'll update when I hear back.

Thanks for updating--never got a response from Ms. Reid, so I appreciate it!

Hey all, I've just been intermittently following this thread because I'm interested in applying to UNC next cycle. Congrats to all of the accepted students and interviewees so far, and good luck to those still waiting to hear back!

I don't want to override this conversation but I'd appreciate it if anyone with some advice could lend me a hand. I wanted to know if there are any IS applicants that went to undergrad in NC as an OOS student or have worked in NC to gain IS status and what all needs to be done to be considered IS. I'm a senior undergrad in NC and UNC is probably my top choice but I'm OOS, hoping to apply in June. I will have voted, worked (over a year ago) and paid taxes in NC, paid bills, and gotten a driver's license and car registration in NC before I apply, but I don't think that I can just put NC as my state residence on AMCAS and that the school would accept that.

I've read information on the NC Dept. of Education's website but haven't found anything very specific about the steps to take. If anyone has some advice or info on this that'd be so helpful!

This is very definition of a "bona fide" resident for application and tuition purposes. Your AMCAS state of residence is very important at UNC, as they (to my knowledge) do not consider OOS AMCAS filers as UNC residents for admission purposes. You can, however, be considered for IS tuition if you file your AMCAS as OOS using the same documentation you mentioned previously. Basically, it's on you to decide if you are/are not a resident when you file your AMCAS. I had a similar situation to you this year and the admissions office was really helpful in helping me figure it out prior to submitting my AMCAS.

Whoa, alright, thanks for clarifying that. I had read so much about qualifying for tuition purposes, but I wasn't sure how or to whom I have to make a case to be able to put NC as my state of residence on the AMCAS. I think I will call Ms. Reid again to confirm this and check with them. Thanks again.

Were we supposed to get am email with our residency application information? I thought it said we would but I'm not sure!

Do you mean the copy of the filled out application? If so, I didn't get mine either after I filled it out.

I am OOS and received a secondary in mid August. Have any OOS applicants received interviews? Just curious-- most of the posts I see are all in state (which I know is normal).

I have not received a residency application form....is it only for accepted students so far?

If you're absolutely sure that you didn't receive it, then I would call them.
I am absolutely sure. I've checked my inbox multiple times. I don't even know what the title of the email is supposed to say.

I think it's something along the lines of "UNC School of medicine online residency form" from Ms. Reid. Nothing in your spam folder either?

Nope. I have deleted my spam folder every single day, and I have never once encountered any email with this title.

Don't sweat it, yet. ALL IS applicants are going to receive it at some point. Last year Ms. Reid sent an email out to all of us (including those not accepted) and said it was a state law requirement for them to get applicant residency information. I'm paraphrasing the email; point being, don't stress about the residency form. It is not an indication of a good thing or a bad one (according to what she said last year).

Alright, thanks. I'm just really tired of UNC not telling me anything after I interivewed way back in early September. I'm hoping I'm not part of the first wave of mass rejections coming up this month. :/

When did the first rejections go out last year?

Not a whole lot of fun waiting to hear back after interviewing in September. UNC, you're the reason I drink.
+1 minus the drinking part

This, more or less.

They just sent out an updated link. Did you receive it now?
Nope, still nothing. I definitely marked myself as in-state on everything (primary, secondary, attended interview on a Wednesday which is IS only).

The actual interview days don't really mean much (I attended an OOS interview day last year, and this year there was an OOS applicant on the IS day that I attended). I would call the office to make sure they have you on file as an IS.
And hey, if it turns out that they think you're OOS, then you've already beat some pretty hefty odds just to get an interview.

This is getting ridiculous. How do they overlook that I marked "North Carolina" as my state of residence on my AMCAS and marked "I am applying as a NC resident" on the secondary and I told my adcom interviewer that I am from a town in NC they've heard of? At least tomorrow morning I can call them since it's not the weekend yet. And I would not meet the stellar OOS applicant criteria needed to get an OOS interview, so it's not because of that hopefully.

I was half-joking about the IS/OOS part. More than likely some clerical error was made somewhere.

Do you think if they thought I was OOS the whole time after my interview, that they did not review or discuss my application at committee meetings at all? I've only heard of IS'ers getting accepted so far.

You were able to apply and interview at Brody. There's no way UNC should think that you're OOS. And if they do think that, it shouldn't have any bearing on when you get discussed. Think about it, OOS applicants are less likely to matriculate to UNC after acceptance than IS applicants, so it would be to the admission committee's advantage to get those offers out sooner rather than later. While I don't necessarily think that they explicitly think like that, it reinforces my point that your residence probably wouldn't have much of a bearing on when your application is put up for discussion.

Okay, that makes sense. I wanted to also ask the admissions office about my application status, but I guess that's crossing the line.
