2014-2015 University of South Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There's no deposit required to accept a seat in the class right? It's been a week since I got the call and I don't have my packet, just making sure I don't miss anything

Do you have anything posted on your portal?

II for CORE! So incredibly excited as its the first one close to home 😀 Dates for the Interview are for January, starting on the 13th.

Congrats guessimgreat! Would you mind sharing your complete date?

I'm in the process of planning a 10 week trip to Costa Rica to volunteer from February to April, and I have been complete since 8/22. The January interview dates make me super nervous about availability. I was hoping to have heard back by now so that this wouldn't happen...and, naturally, they don't accept updates to applications -__-.

Thanks in advance 🙂.

Sure! I was complete 7/29. Also, my last viewed was 10/1, and then today they viewed it and gave me the II. Thanks, and Good luck!

II for SELECT program this morning! 🙂 The earliest dates are mid-Dec. for Allentown and mid-Jan. for Tampa

If i submit my secondary today, when do you think I will get an II (assuming they invite me). I know it variable, but whats the average? 3.9 sGPA 33 mcat, lots of research, decent voluntering and shadowing.

and for the "best moment of your life" essay, I'm thinking about the end of my senior year in high school. Do you guys think that is too long ago, would they rather see something more recent?

anyone familiar with the area willing to comment on what Tampa is like. I interviewed in Miami a while back and was a bit overwhelmed by the city (traffic, size of the city, etc). Just too big of a city for me personally. any thoughts?

Tampa is a mid-size semi-suburban city. I grew up in the mid-west in a small city and I moved there to Los Angeles. After LA I moved to Tampa, so for me it feels kinda small, but by moving downtown I get more of the urban feel I like. For I while I lived in North Tampa near the USF main campus, and that is a more quiet suburban area with about a 20-25 min commute to the school. I recently moved into the downtown area which is more my speed and my commute (although twice as far) is the same if not less time ~20mins. Living downtown and working at USF my commute is the opposite direction as the majority of the traffic AM-South = Bad traffic & PM-North = Bad traffic but the reverse is not bad. There are plenty of things to do and being a shortish drive to Orlando/Disney/Universal is great. The beaches are a bit of a challenge to get to from North Tampa/Tampa but it can be a worth while activity. Plus there is a cruise port in Tampa so quick cruise trips can be done without planes/heafy parking fees. There is Uber here and its well priced. SoHo/South Howard Ave is a great place to go out if you like nightlife. Theres good shopping and a quiet-ish atmosphere. Hope this helps.

It's ultra late in the cycle to submit secondaries. I recommend you wait till next cycle to apply. Chances of getting an II if you submit a secondary right now are slim.

I submitted a secondary right before Halloween and got an II this week. IS, LizzyM ~72. Not that it isn't really late, just not necessarily too late.

any recent ii? I did the Masters in medical science program for the 2012-2013 academic year and fell in love with usf. i woud love the opportunity to interview here.

Accepted for SELECT yesterday! Well I got the call...made me wanna cry with happiness. OOS interviewed early Nov. GL everyone! Everyone was so so passionate and enthusiastic about SELECT when I visited and it really made me fall in love with the community.

Should we send the agreement in that came with the packet if we marked that we accept the acceptance over the portal? Also it's not binding is it?

THANKS! 😀 And Nov 3, GL to her! I think getting the news took a while because the original date they said we would know by was a holiday so there might still be good news on the way! 🙂

Also accepted for SELECT yesterday! OOS Non-trad, reapplicant w/ very subpar stats compared to SDNers but I made it with what I like to think was great activities, and a different career background! :soexcited:Have hope guys! Was complete in July, interviewed 11/3. Good luck everyone!

@ricecakeMD and kiwi, did you interview in Tampa or Allentown?? I was in Tampa!
Allentown. This might be an awesome time to swap stories since we each have a good grasp of 50% of the program. What was your impression of Tampa? The good, the bad, the ugly (aka the Buccaneers 😀). I have heard good things about the area and the school, and it would be neat to hear from someone firsthand.

I was in Allentown too! I would love to hear about Tampa as well.

Got the call this evening! Managed to miss it last night, so I'm super relieved it wasn't just a random wrong number!

OOS, interviewed 11/4!

I interviewed in Allentown last year in April, was waitlisted haha. Chose Tampa this year 🙂 my first time in Florida, was really nice! seems like a decently chill city with plenty of things to do (when we're not studying...). I've lived in a lot of places post college for work but Tampa is easily one of the coolest places I've seen. I'm extremely excited, the campus is very nice as well. Lots of open areas with natural light, easy access to rooms for studying etc. The LVHN campus is jaw-dropping too.

I also interviewed in Tampa! Completely agree with everything..a really nice city, and fantastic campus. The classdooms/facilities were also very new (or renovated). Very laid back, incredibly friendly atmosphere.

Would also love to hear more about Allentown!

Allentown was, as someone earlier put it, jaw dropping. The facilities were all gorgeous, the staff very friendly, and the surgical ed center was just the coolest thing I have ever seen. Not to mention LVHN had a ridiculous number of Top 100 rankings. I think 9 specialties in all were nationally ranked, which was pretty bonkers for what technically is a 'community hospital'

Agreed! Everything was really pretty and technologically advanced. They had these cool robots that delivered supplies to hospital rooms and a great surgical simulation center. I don't know much about the Allentown area itself though.

don't take my word for it, but i think core might have slightly higher average stats. this is because select has students (like me) who are older, non-trad with a unique life path and a maybe poor undergrad performance 😀

They've never posted numbers, but in general that's the prevailing theory, but there are plenty of non-trad's in both classes and the oldest person in my class is in CORE, not SELECT. Regardless, once classes start, there is very little division between the two groups and we mix and mingle plenty. I'm definitely gonna miss my CORE buddies when I head up to Allentown next year.

My portal just changed today to include the "Offer" tab! Do we need to print out the technical standards and mail that in?

After being accepted you should get a packet in the mail within 2-3 weeks with all the forms you need to mail in. I didn't have to print out anything last year.

Hey guys,

Just creeping on this thread.

IS applicant. Secondary complete 08/29-9/2. Interviewed 11/3. Waitlisted last week for SELECT.
Non-trad. cGPA 3.3/cGPA 3.4. MCAT 30. Graduate GPA 4.0. Non-traditional.

Keeping my fingers crossed. I am doing a research masters at the medical school so if there are any questions you may have about the school itself, let me know.

Hello future c/o 2019!

If you've gotten accepted to USF - congrats!!!! - and are starting your apartment hunt, please IM me ASAP! (I have been on SDN for a few years so you can definitely check that I'm not a creeper haha).

PS. I don't check SDN very often these days so please IM so that I get an email notfication rather than just replying to this. Thanks and good luck to the rest of you 🙂

I am a long time reader on this thread. I interviewed SELECT in Allentown on November 17th. Has anyone that interviewed that date heard anything. I see that there is a CORE who interviewed on day later than me received an acceptance call which is frightening me now.

I wouldn't worry too much. On my interview day they said because of the holidays this week that acceptance calls might flow into next week.

Big news today for those who don't live in the Tampa area. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to move the medical school downtown.

The area isn't much right now, but coupled with the revitalization project they're proposing downtown, it would be vastly improved. For hockey fans it's right next to the Lightning stadium, so there's that. 🙂
