2014-2015 University of South Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Big news today for those who don't live in the Tampa area. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to move the medical school downtown.

The area isn't much right now, but coupled with the revitalization project they're proposing downtown, it would be vastly improved. For hockey fans it's right next to the Lightning stadium, so there's that. 🙂

WOW! So what part of downtown will the school be in and how will the campus look like? What are the details for this?

Details are still being hashed out. Here's the article on the medical school website. It will pretty much be a building (hopefully with some nice roof space).

This is just the medical school, not nursing, pharmacy, fledgling PA program, or PT programs.

OOS II for SELECT! Any strategic difference/advantage to interviewing in FL vs PA or vice versa?

No. Both has current students so you can hear from them. I believe PA may have more students so if you like a smaller interview day, FL is better. Also a little more accessible, airport wise. Many accepted students will do second look at the location they didn't interview at so they can see both.

Sounds good. I'll probably pick Tampa then since that's where we would spend the first 2 years anyway, and like you said the airport is a bit closer.

what is the best airport to travel to for allentown location? and hotel recommendations? are there student hosts at all?

Would you mind sharing stats?! Congrats on the II!

GPA was nothing to write home about (3.2), but I did have a relative high 35 MCAT. I would like to think I had some unique ECs though and I wrote about those on the secondary.

BTW, I ended up picking Allentown since it's within driving distance for me and the earliest Tampa date is in March.

Any recent IIs besides wh2k13? I drive by the COM almost daily and haven't seen their usual signage up directing people to the interview location for a few weeks now so I am wondering if they are in a II lull right now.

I was just there Tuesday. Really liked the school a lot

So quiet. Don't know if that is a good sign or a bad one. I interviewed November 17th in Allentown and still no word at all. I am so nervous and wish I knew when I would hear something. Seems looking over the history of this board that most SELECT applicants hear in about 2.5 weeks while CORE applicants seem to find out sooner. I am hoping that because of the Thanksgiving holiday that there is just a delay as I wait on pins & needles. Please Santa ... all I want for Christmas is this acceptance!

Can anyone (current students) shed any light on how SELECT committee meets and how often. There doesn't seem to be anyone who is on SDN who interviewed in Allentown on my date of 11/17 who has posted. There have been two CORE acceptances that interviewed after me. Does the CORE committee meet weekly? I thought my interview really went well and felt so good afterwards but I am definitely having a lot of anxiety about it now. It looks like my app was looked at once a few days after my interview but nothing lately. Also, do all calls either SELECT or CORE come on Wednesdays only??? Thanks in advance for any info.

Thanks Fumbles14! No choice but to wait until next Wednesday and hope that I don't receive a Waitlist letter or decline email before that. Congrats on your acceptance and happy Holidays!

You too, hope to have you as a classmate 🙂 The post-interview acceptance %s are slightly higher than other programs and schools due to their extremely rigorous secondary screen, so stay optimistic!

Great to hear! And actually I called USF and heard via voicemail that woman in charge of last names A-L admissions has been out of the office for weeks until tomorrow so maybe this could explain it since my last name falls in there.

Curious if the others accepted to CORE the past few weeks have had their last names M through Z?????...Either way no mail means I am still in the game!

Thanks again for all the positivity! Crossing my fingers and holding my breath yet again until Wednesday!

I will say my last name falls in the M-Z category. I guess I can be thankful for once in my life that my last name is at the end of the alphabet lol. I hope you hear good news soon.

Accepted applicant here, anyone know if there is a FB group or anything for accepted people? I think USF said during interview day that they would start one...?

Congrats! Usually they do it a little later in the year when the first years take everything over (admissions, welcoming, etc), but yes, it will be forthcoming.

For those of you who will be interviewing soon, I just want to let you know the interview day is absolutely wonderful! There is literally no stress whatsoever, and the interviewers(mine and others I saw+ faculty) were extremely pleasant to interact with. I don't know if I will get an acceptance here, but I can definitely say that everyone tried to know me as an individual, and made me feel very comfortable sharing my thoughts. No 'hard' questions, no nitty gritty questions on your app, just a friendly conversation to see your fit. Good luck guys!! Hope I will have a chance to attend 🙂

Hey guys!

Any recent interview invites? I wonder whether they'll send out a batch before the break...

Is anyone who has interviewed in the MSP3 program? I'm wondering if they've even looked at us yet.

Hi guys! So what's the consensus about the application last viewed status? Is it actually indicative of anything?

someone posted in this thread that they called the school and were told that the application last viewed date is not accurate.

Can anyone tell me what the turnaround time from interview to decision is? EDIT: I browsed the thread and found out that turnaround is 1-2 weeks.

Anyone know the post-interview acceptance rate?

I'd also like to know this. And does anyone know what the post-interview acceptance rate for SELECT is and/or if it's significantly different from CORE?

The number of applicants to attendees was 200/57 a couple years ago for SELECT. You can extrapolate a slightly higher acceptance rate from that because most schools will overaccept (not everyone will attend). The applicant number might have gone up a little bit as well as the program has gotten a bit more mature and the number of SELECT students was smaller in this year's class as well (around 50). Sorry, I don't know the numbers for CORE.

The MSAR says that last year there were 409 interviews and 177 matriculated, but that's probably core and select combined. And yes, turnaround is no more than a few weeks, which is pretty dang nice 🙂

Not nearly as nice as the 22 hour turnaround I had at UVA😉 pretty sure that one deserves a spot in the Guinness book of world records

Just got an II yesterday. My application was complete in October. I'm an IS re-applicant with a 3.86 GPA, 32 MCAT. So excited because I interviewed last year and was waitlisted. Any others in the same boat?

Haha that's awesome. Last year it took one school 4 months to send me a Wait list letter

Anyone who went to Tampa, can you describe some of the school facilities; libraries, classrooms, hospitals and whatever they were kind enough to tour you through>

Got my II on 1/7/15, Application was submitted and complete on 10/1/14, my stats are: URM, In-State APP, 30 MCAT, 3.98 GPA, very unique ECs, disadvantaged status, and one hell of story. LOL. Interview is 2/10/15 for the Core program.

On the outside they look rather old but on the inside it's super up to date & relatively modern. Classrooms was good and like most medical schools I saw on the interview trail. The school itself seemed a little cramped but a lot of future exciting things happening in the future like moving the school of medicine to downtown to be closer to TGH, CAMLS, etc. Library seemed to be average, we only walked by a part of it though. It seemed a bit small but it was also sparse too (no undergrads or stuff like that). Students also have their fitness center/gym and bookstore I think.

However, because this is on the main USF undergrad campus, I feel like you could also take advantage of the resources there like their bigger gyms, libraries, more eating places, etc.

I feel like a medical student can describe USF better than me.

I noticed that their 2014 match list indicates about 120 students, but last year's MSAR (I'm assuming class of 2018) says close to 180 students matriculate. Please correct me if mistaken, but does the class size seem to have swelled lately? Is this related to them separating the Core/Select programs?

This year's SELECT class is the first one to graduate, so the 2014 Match list only includes Core and each Core class is ~120 students. The 2018 class has ~50 SELECT students, so that is where the class size discrepancy is occuring between the Match list and the MSAR. 🙂

Thanks a lot for the quick response! That clears things up!
