2014-2015 University of South Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted student here, have a few questions for someone attending the school 🙂. What is the social dynamic at USF? Do the students generally have a lot of fun/tend to do things during free time? And if so, what? I'm from California so I'm trying to get a feel for what Floridians do 🙂. Maybe someone else from California can shed some light on the transition from here to there. Thanks!!

I won't claim the Floridian label, but we do the same things that the rest of the country do, with an extended season to go to the beach. Busch Gardens passes are cheap for students. People go to the bars/clubs on the weekends and weekdays sometimes. There's Lightning, Rays, Bucanneers, and USF teams. Disneyworld, Islands of Adventure, etc are a short trip away in Orlando. Key West is a popular destination too. If you like outdoor stuff, there's kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking, cycling, canoing, etc. MS1's have plenty of time for fun. MS2's not as much, but we still get some fun in when we can and the MS4's probably have the most free time out of all of us.

Any interview dates and slots still open? Really hoping to interview in Florida and specifically USF for personal reasons 🙂 Got accepted elsewhere but I really want to be at USF

Just got an II for SELECT today! From what I could see on the calendar, it looks like there are 2 interview days left: 3/23 and 4/6.

OOS, 31 mcat, 3.65 gpa. Complete since august-- there's still hope out there! 😀

I just received an Interview Invite for the SELECT program. I will be interviewing on April 6th. Wow...I did not know they conducted interviews this late. I will probably attend a Second Look Day from another school before this interview...kind of odd.

is there an IS bias? I can't find this section on MSAR

It is a public school so it is expected to have some IS bias. That being said, we do have a significant number of OOS students in our class.

when is the second look day?

"interview season usually goes through mid may" is that legit?

Admissions is just the nicest batch of people I have ever met. One just called me basically as a 'check up' to make sure I didn't have any questions about Second Look or Financial Aid.

Does anyone happen to know the email we can send application updates? Would appreciate it greatly!! 🙂

Haha. Got that call too. Definitely was very considerate

in their app complete email they said "In order to uphold the highest level of integrity for all our applicants, we would appreciate it if you do not send application updates (including transcripts) unless specifically requested."

that being said if they requested it you can send it to [email protected] with update in the subject line and include your AMCAS ID

Thanks for the response! Too bad I already sent in the email lol. Hope they don't hate me now..

My application showed a "view" back in September, but haven't heard a thing from them so far. My stats are similar to some of those getting interviews. Is it worth a call to them?

Update them with what ive done since my secondary almost 6 months ago.

They would most likely prefer a letter for that (assuming they accept them at all, which I don't think they do prior to an II). The person answering the phone has no role in your admissions and any notes they add to your file would perhaps be in the negative column (i.e. can't follow directions, thinks he's special, wasted my time trying to give an update over the phone). Maybe I'm underestimating the kindness of the admissions office and they won't hold it against you, but either way it's not going to achieve the outcome you want.

Where does everyone see the view date on the application portal? I think I'm overlooking it lol

II 2/3, Interviewed 2/17, Waitlisted today (3/10) via snail mail for CORE.

If you're interviewing for CORE after 2/17 then you're interviewing for a waitlist position, I know this because one of my interviewers told me so even though he wasn't supposed to.

That's disappointing but good to know.

hello. what does the "II" you guys are mentioning refer to? the "last viewed" date on my application was quite a while ago. i still have not received anything from the school. what would my chances be for an interview? even if it is only for the waitlist. also, how is the school notifying applicants, is it through mail, email, or updates to the applicant homepage?

I noticed on their webpage they schedule 2 interviews for each applicant. Is that for the same day, or are there two different interviews and you will be notified if you are selected for each one?

It's two one hour interviews. One after another.

I was rejected and offered to apply IMS this week. Not sure that helps you. It was email. I was last viewed like Jan 3 or something like that.

can we only apply to IMS if we're offered to? and does anyone know why some kids are getting rejected and some aren't, pre-II?

Yes, for the one I was offered you can only apply if they invite you too. I filled out the application but haven't heard anything back from them.

I assume my stats are why I was rejected and offered IMS. LizzyM 63. The rest of my app was probably fine.

Edit: Also, I applied to Core only. So that might have had something to do with it.

I thought that anyone could apply to the IMS program? I think there is only 1 IMS program, and it usually has about 10 or so people in it.

okay yeah that makes sense, my app sounds similar to yours, so i guess if anyone knows why some applicants are still in the running and others aren't, is my question.

are there others out there who haven't been rejected but also haven't received an II?

I emailed and called. Heres the reply:
1. How many people are invited to apply to this program (estimate is fine)? The MD Office of Admissions sent out the invitation email, so I do not know how many students were invited to apply

2. Are you only allowed to apply if invited, or could just anyone choose to apply? Only students who were invited to apply will be considered.

It seems like everyone was allowed to apply last year tho. So perhaps this is false.

Thanks for your help 🙂
If you enter into the IMS program, are you guaranteed entrance into the MD program upon completion of the IMS degree? also does "II" refer to secondary application or receiving an interview?

I also haven't been rejected yet but haven't received any notification even for an interview. I wish somehow they would let us know sooner if we have a chance, instead of waiting until the last minute to let us know we are rejected (really hoping that is not the case). I'm just hoping I get called for an interview. I applied with a 3.73 cumulative gpa, but a low exam score...probably at the bare minimum for acceptance with the score, but my extracurriculars, recommendations, and experiences are good and I'm a unique applicant in that I finished HS in 3 yrs and my bachelors in 3...really hope they take into all the factors in consideration...although I feel like I'm waiting for the inevitable bad news 🙁

From what I understand, purely entering and finishing the IMS program does not guarantee entrance into the MD program. Even if you do well in the IMS program, there is no guarantee. However, doing well will increase your chances of getting accepted to a medical school and should ideally increase your chances of getting into USF MD. That being said, it will not make up for a low MCAT score. The IMS students take the basic science courses with the MSIs -- so it is excellent preparation. However, the MSP3 program is also excellent preparation, and it includes courses that you will take as a MSII. It really just depends which route you want to take.

Actually, it has been completely reworked. I believe only people invited to apply can do so and to be invited you had to have applied for regular admissions. It is also a guaranteed admissions assuming you do well and pass all the criteria listed.

I just looked up USF's information for the MSP3 program, from what I can tell that is different from the IMS program and there is not guarantee of acceptance for that one. It prepares you for health professions schools and you get a Master's, but the IMS is a bit different because they have to select you to apply. Thanks for the information.I think the IMS program would be a good fit for me if they cannot offer me a waitlist position or acceptance for this year. Fingers crossed so tightly I can barely type this 😀 although today is Friday the 13th, so every time my phone shows a notification I jump!

has anyone else not received any notification from the school in terms of acceptance/rejection/interview/no-interview?

It's about time. I wish this had been there for my colleagues in my year. I had a couple friends in the IMS program and all ended up matriculating at other medical schools despite doing well in the IMS program. I believe they all did receive interviews at the school, but were either waitlisted or rejected.

I have neither been accepted nor rejected pre-II from USF this late in the interview season... I know quite a few people have gotten rejections. Does anyone know if there are any interview dates left? Or does USF do silent rejections?

wondering the same. although I think sending updates to them probably pissed them off 🙁
