2014-2015 University of Texas - San Antonio Application Thread

Can anyone clarify how having two choices to rank will effect admission?

For example, if the rotations in South Texas is your top choice, can you pre-match to the San Antonio clinical ed program first?

After interviewing, are you considered for just one program? Or are you considered for the school in general, and whichever program you rank first will be the program you will eventually be enrolled in if you choose to go to UTHSCSA?

If I remember correctly, the South Texas spots are only filled through the match. There is no prematch for South Texas. You may prematch to the San Antonio only location, but then rank South Texas higher.

Thanks, @Cart_S! I guess I'm wondering if the candidates are considered by the school as a whole or separately by the two programs/tracks.

No problem. I want to say separately. And just as an addition, if you are unsure about committing to the South Texas campus, you can also just do a single rotation there. I talked to an MS4 student who had done that and really enjoyed it.

OOS here and just received an acceptance yesterday! I really liked the school and my sister lives right outside of San Antonio so this is wonderful news! Good luck everybody!

When did you interview?

So if I did not receive a pre match offer. Could I still get matched on Match day or should I anticipate a rejection or wait list letter?

Does any feel like UTHSCSA interviews alot of people who only interview at TCOM and UTHSCSA? Those are the only two II's I received and even tho my interview went really well, I can't help but feel like I'm a waitlist or reject candidate and will end up at TCOM or maybe even not TCOM. Both schools interview so many people and accept those interviewed at a lower rate than most med schools.

I don't know, maybe this is just the pessimist in me babbling, but I feel like the people who get into UTHSCSA at least have interviews in a few other MD schools in Texas and I'm just a classic "interview then waitlist" candidate (3.35 GPA 35 MCAT) at best.

sigh, Happy new years everyone, hopefully next month speeds by and February arrives quickly. Cheers.

I've interviewed at 5 schools including Southwestern, yet San Antonio never sent me an interview. In fact, I have two other friends who have stories similar to mine as well; interviews at nearly every Texas school except San Antonio. So maybe there's something to that.

Sure wish they'd give me an interview though. Please San Antonio, love me! D:

Maybe send in a letter of interest?

Yeah but we're at the opposite ends of the applicant pool. You're a much higher stat or better candidate than me and will get interviews from all the top statistically top schools in texas and I will interview at one or two of the statistically lowest. So it makes sense that UTHSCSA won't even interview you since they know you will end up at another school. But its those middle candidates who maybe interview at El paso, a&m and UTHSCSA that really end up going to UTHSCSA. I get the privilege of interviewing just to be rejected/waitlisted. I've seen this happen with UTHSCSA+TCOM and TTech+TCOM. Most candidates who end up with this interview combo will end up at the latter school.

Once again, this is all cynical speculation on my part based on anecdotal evidence lol but I'm just voicing my opinion. But congrats on all your interviews. You did better than me in undergrad and definitely deserve it! Good luck with match day!

TCOM isn't as competitive as the MD schools so it's not surprising that people with only TCOM + 1 MD school interview get into TCOM and not the MD school. With that said, you certainly stand a chance since you made it to the interview stage. Silverflash and I are numerically somewhat comparable applicants and even interviewed at multiple places on the same day, yet I got an interview to UTHSCSA while he got one to A&M. There's more to an app than just numbers and UTHSCSA chose to interview you for a reason! Keep your chin up, we're all gonna make it!

Stats are only a part of it. If they like you enough, they'll accept you. Actually, my student host at UT Houston said he had a 3.3 GPA, but I don't know about the MCAT. Your MCAT is really strong and if your interviewers liked you, I feel that you have a chance at getting in.

Has anyone who has prematched here gotten their formal letter of acceptance in the mail yet? And approximately when did that arrive?

for those of you participating in the match, where/how is the south texas clin ed campus option playing into y'alls rankings? im also having a tough time deciding whether to put a&m or uthscsa first. both great schools! anyone having similar issues?

I got a couple prematch acceptances, but not one from San Antonio, and it's my personal first choice. Should I send a Letter of Intent before or after the Match? I have a 3.35 cGPA, a 3.8 sGPA, and a 37 MCAT (14, 11, 12), do you guys think my low cGPA will be a problem for them? I really loved the city, and would be very happy to go to school here.

I'm sorry. How could they send rejection letters before the match? Did you get it in the mail today?
Nahh it was an email!

I didn't interview here, so I wasn't surprised at all! I was somewhat hopeful it was a late interview spot when I saw it was from their admissions email but oh well haha

Rejected, as well. Kinda saw it coming. I have already started studying for the new MCAT. I figured 26 wasn't going to cut it.

Rejection letter - no interview.... And I just left a root canal, haha.
Guess I expected it since I hadn't heard anything from them. Oh well.

Rejected, OOS, LizzyM ~77. I don't what this school is looking for considering the other Texas schools have shown me lots of love.

I read somewhere that they had decided not to implement their planned curriculum change for the incoming class of 2015. Does anyone know what the current planned curriculum is going to look like for next years incoming class?

Joining the pre-II rejection club! We should get t-shirts.

I second not knowing what they're looking for. 73 LizzyM seems like it should be enough for an interview since I've interviewed at 5 other Texas schools, but I guess not. Oh well!

It will be the current curriculum, they arent going to revert back to the old. Direct source from the school<<

I'm looking through the packet I went home with after my interview, and it only has a one page outline of the goals of the new curriculum, does anyone have any details on what their new curriculum change actually entails? I'm having real trouble deciding between this and another school I pre-matched at,

It's not the stats that kept you out and then it is the stats that probably kept you out. Some TX schools would see the application and come to the conclusion that you would not attend with high stats and hence not waste an interview slot. Unless, somehow they see in the app that you have ties to area, URM, Hispanic, passion to serve rural community, etc....Just my opinion.

its a bunch of stuff about group work @ UTHSCSA.. i know several students and they do not like it at all. many complain b/c the curriculum is still "new" at the school and very unorganized. just what ive heard from many of the students i know... several are unhappy w/ their choice 🙁

It's definitely not all about scores at these schools. I know San Antonio in particular stressed to us that they would throw high stats away if they didn't have something about them.

I don't think that the 73 LizzyM will be enough to say high stats kept them out.

Well that's quite upsetting to hear, this had been my first choice and now I'm not so certain because the curriculum is up there with student comradery in terms of my most important criteria for choosing a medical school, and based on my interviews UTHSCSA had been my top choice, above A&M and Texas Tech. Now I am much less certain about how to submit my match list.

Could you by any chance go into more detail about what in particular it is that they don't like or why they regret having chosen this school?

When I interviewed, I stayed in a house with a few students, and one of them said their only complaint was really how much the school kept asking for feedback. On everything. Including and/or especially the group work, where peer evaluations - not anonymous - are part of your grade. I might not be remembering the details accurately (like about anonymity) so any current students, please feel free to correct me.

This was similar to my experience. The curriculum is new-ish (I think it's currently in its 3rd year?), and many of the students complained that (1) there are constant surveys about the curriculum and (2) there are kinks that still need to be worked out.

My emphirical observation following the process is that LizzyM 73 applicant for example from Houston Texas, may not get interview invite from Texas Tech, UNT or UTHSCA unless some compelling application, like moving to area, strong passion for primary care, Hispanic...Of course , There are exceptions but I have seen this happen

My husband's an MS1 at UTHSCSA this year. sweetnothings35 was right that this is the 3rd year of the new curriculum, first of all. Also, there is a lot of feedback required both during and at the ends of each module. According to my husband, it can get pretty tedious, but the instructors actually do take into account students' comments, whether it's during that same year or if it is something they can change to help out the next year's class.

I read somewhere that they had decided not to implement their planned curriculum change for the incoming class of 2015. Does anyone know what the current planned curriculum is going to look like for next years incoming class?

In regards to this, there is no way they'd change the curriculum again after only 3 years. First, that would just be pretty ridiculous considering the person they hired to design this curriculum style is the same person who designed BCM's current curriculum, and it's been really successful for them. Additionally, it is normal for USMLE Step 1 scores to drop from the previous year when implementing a new curriculum and that did not happen with UTHSCSA's new curriculum and that presents a very strong argument for keeping this style of curriculum even longer.
