2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Am I over-analyzing this secondary scenario question? At first I was like oh this isn't too hard and after saying the obvious informational stuff I said that I would give her an in office pregnancy test if there is a chance she is pregnant, STD test, Birth control prescription etc...without telling the girls mom if she didn't want me to. But then I realized that you can't offer any of that to the girl because her mother would see it on the bill/insurance or the girl would need to use her mothers insurance to get her the birth control and her mom would find out. So the only option I can think of is to tell the girl to go to somewhere like planned parenthood because that is the only way for her to get birth control/std tests done without her mom finding out. But is this reading way too far into the question?

Lol I just realized the prompt was changed but I submitted it before it was changed...thankfully I called this morning and they said it shouldn't be a problem. Crisis averted.

So if we're a US citizen do we still need to email them our passport scan?

I submitted yesterday and was marked complete, but next to each of my letters is (Science) as if they are a science letter, but only 2 of them are? Anyone else with this issue?

Did anyone have difficulty uploading their picture? I browsed and selected mine, but then it doesn't appear or say upload. Do I just assume that it has uploaded?

According to the VCU supplemental website:
"For those applicants who are permanent residents of the US or Canada a front and back copy of your permanent resident/green card is required by mail or email before full review can proceed."
As a US citizen you have no other documents to submit. Just sit tight!

Can anyone shed some light on the legality of the new prompt (sexually active teenager one)?? I know that there are lots of legal issues concerning doctor-patient confidentiality. I know what I would do MORALLY, but theoretically, if the mother suspected that her daughter was sexually active and I chose to respect the child's privacy, could the parent get some sort of legal order demanding that I tell her? This is why I'm trying to be a doctor, not a lawyer 🙁

You can google it if you're really interested. But I don't think it matters anyway. I guarantee they are more interested in knowing how you think and what your priorities/values are as opposed to your legal knowledge pertaining to a very specific situation.

That's what I figured, I was more curious than anything else lol

This school seems to be already churning out decisions, with early rejections and early" pre interview"invites
Getting nervous!

Can they give you a pre interview or pre reject prior to receiving your LoRs?

Has anyone not received a secondary who is waiting for MCAT scores? I have a not-so-stellar MCAT score and am retaking soon. Wondering if they're going to wait to see my second one before screening me out or sending me a secondary. Other schools have already rejected me, but told me to contact them if my scores go up to be reconsidered... not sure how most schools go about this. Everything else is verified/completed. Any ideas?

I don't think they're looking for the clinical practices as much as they're looking for how YOU would respond from a morality standpoint (I'm assuming). As far as the insurance thing goes, I think it depends on the insurance. I think they care way more about what decision you would make and why.

How do you upload your picture?? I clicked "browse," selected the file, clicked "save" at the bottom, and then nothing happened.

Finally submitted this one!! Granted, I only got it yesterday, but I feel very behind the rest of you! Haha

Do not feel behind. I'm turning mine in as they come and VCU is near the bottom of the list for me. At least another week on my end.

Were you able to upload your picture? I'm having trouble with this part.

Complete - Letters Recieved today :claps: I sent them on Monday (7/7) along with my secondary.

I was! Just hit save section after you upload it. I think you have to have every question answered (or at least put a letter in the essays so it registers) or the page will erase. I didn't realize until today that it uploaded, so it might also take some time.

Use a smaller pic maybe. It might time out if the picture is too many MB.

I wonder why this thread is so busy compared to every other school:laugh:

To be honest, VCU is one of the schools that EVERYBODY applies to in case they don't get into their state school (Like Creighton, Tulane, Rush, RFU, etc.). It stands to reason that with applicants from all 50 states, VCU's sdn thread is bound to be hoppin'.

I imagine we have more activity than usual tho, probably due to prompt changes, and technical issues with secondaries

VCU just scared me pretty bad, they emailed me that my status was changed, when its been complete since this morning. All it said was my app was going to committee, I thought it was my first denial for sure for a minute there....:nailbiting:

Doesnt it say its going to be looked at by the committee in the completion status though?

anyone describe gap year here?

Lapses in undergrad means you took time off during your 4 years. Gap year is after the 4 years so it should not fall under that.

Yes. I saw in a thread from the previous year that someone emailed admissions to clarify what that q meant. The response said to include time gaps in undergraduate years or afterwards if applicable.

You are the Only person that got through the screen! Congrats!

For this question: Please briefly explain any lapses in your undergraduate education, if you did not have any lapses are you just supposed to leave it blank?

Also for letters of rec, in my application portal, when I click on the incomplete section of the file status, it informs me that letters of recommendation must be from 2 science professors and 1 non-science professor. However, on the website and in the Instructions for Completing Applicant File it states that VCU requires three letters of recommendation from anyone who has supervised me, knows me well and is able to speak to my personal characteristics. Could anyone clarify what types of letters are required and the maximum number of letters allowed?

Thanks!
