2014-2015 Western Michigan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you look at how people are posting their II's, it looks like they're going in batches by month. October people most likely won't hear until November
That's unfortunate, but I do see the trend now. Thanks for the heads up.

Any tips for the phone interview? 🙂 I know an outside company does it, so do you not get much of a chance to talk about the school specifically?

It's very casual! You really can't prepare for it, so I would say just make sure your phone is charged and has a good signal. My phone dropped the call midway though the interview and that was kinda awkward

Good luck everybody having in-person interviews, and the folks starting phone interviews! (I didn't get my phone interview until November, and I still got in with no waitlist last year!)

I'm having my phone interview in 50 mins....
So what do I have to know about the school for the phone interview?
I'm just curious as everyone said there is nothing to prepare.. but still, it's an interview for med school.. I don't wanna mess it up!

Hey my call dropped too! It freaked me out, haha! It was very casual though, I think being confident and genuine is the best thing for people to do. Glad your call worked out as well!

Does anyone have advice on the best hotel for an on-campus II??

If you're not on a tight budget, the Raddison downtown is very nice and is a short walk away from the school. Depending on the weather, you could still end up driving for it... so I sort of think you might as well just grab a cheaper hotel further away. Honestly any will do, but you might avoid the cheap cheap cheap ones (the red roof inns and similar) just to make sure you get a quality night's sleep beforehand.

Thanks! The interview is this Friday, so I might go for the radisson since there's no sign of rain.

If anyone else is staying overnight before the interview and wants to carpool or anything, let me know!!

Good luck this Friday! You may or may not get to meet some of the current med students. We're doing a "day of service" that day, so I'm not sure if a couple of us will make it back for lunch or not.

Just some general suggestions for the Kalamazoo area if you happen to have some spare time for those lucky ducks getting in-person interviews:

Sweetwater's donut mill - excellent, amazing donuts not too far from the WMU campus.
Breweries - you have to check out Bell's Brewery (arguably the best beer from Michigan)! Also, Rupert's is another great one in the area.

Thanks! its nice to know that there are service opportunities! If you don't mind me asking, is it medically related service, or just general service?

We do both, but Friday's thing is non-medical specific. We're participating in a community day of service.

That said, we have a longitudinal experience built into the curriculum on community health volunteerism. In groups we go out to local agencies to do community health work with them once a month (the local health department, the community health office of one of the local hospitals, a local charity that provides mental health care, etc). So we get to do both non-medical and medical-focused service, with a strong emphasis on medical.

Do they give phone interviews well into the cycle? Perhaps they won't be extending as many, as the application cycle progresses...

Dang my phone interview was complete 9/11. I wonder if I'm done here...

Hello! I'll be there on the 17th!
First interview, I just scheduled it today and I'm SO EXCITED.

Phone int on 10/16, btw 🙂

That's awesome - congrats! My phone interview was on 10/17, but was just marked "Complete" today. I'm anxiously awaiting some good news!

+1 Exact same situation as you. Best of luck!

I feel like I rambled for the answers and didn't make any sense. Anyone else in the same boat? I feel horrible 🙁

My phone II took like 27 mins which was probably too short, and I got an onsite. They understand if you are nervous!

Here's the infographic from the interview if anyone wants to know more about the first class (idk if it's on the website). I was super impressed by everything, the only worrisome aspect for me was the financial aid 🙂

Anyone who's interviewed here have any tips on preparing (besides the obvious relax and be yourself😉)? Interviewing here on Friday and really excited about seeing some of you guys and checking out the school!!

Before each interview, I always read over my PS/primary/secondary/updates, and come up with a few anecdotes about myself that I can use in a variety of situations

And watch lots of hgtv, but that might just be me.....

Have a good reason for wanting to come to this school. Why are you interested in WMed specifically? Dig around for some stories about the school, its students, etc... and maybe think about how you'd fit into the culture here. (Speaking as a current student who was admitted last year)

I know people like to put this information up ! This is the first or second time I post here. I had my phone interview this morning. Is so hard to feel good or bad after, I think it was okay. My interview took exactly 1 hour. Agin you cant really prepare, just know why you like the school and know yourself.

Good luck everyone. Hope for some good news.

Are there days of the week when "things" happen? I noticed a lot of updates come out on Wednesdays, particularly for in-person interview invites.

I'm so anxious - I love this school!!!

Just to check - open/closed file? Student interviewers? 🙂
Mine was an open interview.
The person interviewing me had done a great job of knowing all about me from my application. Most of the interview was discussing my areas of weakness and what I planned to do about it. I also asked the interviewer what they did in a similar situation and we talked quite a while about that.
This school is very thorough.
It is good to know that their evaluation is not just based on one event i.e. one interview with one person... there are multiple opportunities for them to get to know you as a applicant.

I think the interviewers for our group were faculty and attending physicians.

Javelin is correct, all the interviewers are faculty of the school or the WMed residency program, and (I remember) open file.

No student interviewers - but you'll have lunch with some of the students, and will have an opportunity to chat with them.

How often are the waves for Campus II's?
I finished my telephone interview and have been marked complete since: 10/23
