Accepted today off the Waitlist with a merit scholarship!
Interviewed in November!

I absolutely love their process. On the same day, you get people who interviewed in totally different seasons accepted off the waitlist. They're transparent and honest - it's obvious they really do continuously review candidates from all interview dates.

Congrats to you!

I will say that Wmed is one of the most, if not the most transparent about everything really.

This is an important factor for me when deciding which medical school to go to. Plus, they care about you too. The community cares. It really is an honor to learn in kzoo.

Congrats to everyone who got in. So is 100% going to be coming here next year? 😀 Sound off please.

Congrats to the newly accepted!! Don't fret not-yet-accepted-people, there's still lots of time! A lot of schools see movement on the decision deadline day (I think May 1 this year) after which you can only hold acceptance at one school at a time. But I will still keep my fingers crossed that you all hear good news sooner than that.

Did any accepted students receive an email about background check?

"You have received this email because you have been waitlisted or conditionally accepted by one or more of the medical schools participating in the AAMC-facilitated program for performing criminal background checks on conditionally accepted applicants and waiting list applicants."

I'm just wondering if this is from WMed or another school that I'm waitlisted at.

Thanks!

Just got the wait list email. Very quick turn around time! I didn't even expect to hear back from them before next week. Just trying to stay positive now as it seems based on this thread that there is active wait list movement.

If I remember correctly, while you are completing the background check there is an option showing which schools have requested it and also which schools you want to release the results to. So you should be able to see if any other schools have requested a background check.

That's weird.. My report is completed, and I have already released it, but I still don't see any information about schools.. Maybe I am not careful enough..

Am looking forward to second look April 10th.

Couple questions:
What is the computer requirement.... I checked out the student handbook and saw the specs... can a current student give me the minimum needs in regards to the computer and what would be really nice to have (but maybe not necessary). I am wanting to start shopping and would love some advice on what to get i.e. is a 15" screen important or would a 13" work fine. Also are there any extras i.e. ports I should get added when I am building the computer.

Another question a current student might be able to help me with: Do you know if the school let you know the financial awards (i.e. need awards) before April 30th or is it after that? I received a merit amount at the same time as my acceptance... I was wondering if we will know the total financials before we make out final decision.

thanks

Anyone waitlisted from the December 15th interview dates heard back yet? I'm getting kind of antsy! It seems like they are reviewing in order of interview days...?
(Also I'm trying not to take it as a bad omen that my "Financial" tab appeared last week and is no longer there...)

A 15" is what I have, but I think a 13" is fine. I'd actually double check that with the school just to be sure. The only extra port needed is an HDMI port (I mistakenly said "none" before). You just need to be able to run ibooks and the testing software. I will say that a 15" is probably better than a 13" if only because pictures on exams are probably a little easier to see.

re: awards, I would just call the financial aid office and ask. I can't quite remember. But I'm certain that the financial aid office would have a good answer for you.

It's not by interview date. Look at prior posts, but people are being accepted off the waitlist at the same time with interviews in different seasons.

I'm in the December cohort (before your date) and my financial tab went missing today, too, and I'm totally playing it cool (trying to). 🙂

That's probably the case. I just got really excited bc I remember last fall, I was checking my portal and saw I had the option to select an interview time before I was sent an email with an invitation to interview.

I think I might have figured out the changing "financial" tab thing. Current students are getting billed right now... so I think financials are changing because across the board financial things are changing. I know we all want a sign to come down from on high, but unfortunately I don't think the financials tab is it 😛

Still keeping my fingers crossed for all of you.

To the two WMed students on here, did you attend second look day? If so, what did you get out of it?

How about any of the other pre-meds here? Are you going?
I want to but I am on the fence about it because I am a couple of states away. . .

I'm planning on going. I bought really cheap tickets flying into midway and I'm getting a rental car. But I have family in Chicago so that is another bonus of going. Are you a part of the FB group? A lot of people have been talking about it on there

I thought I was on the facebook page but I must have missed the part were everyone is talking about it... is there a special facebook page for students and next year students?

I'm a current student and I went to second look day last year. It was a last minute decision, for me (I actually called Jean the day before and basically said "I may or may not be there tomorrow... just fyi!")

For me, second look day was a chance to give some extra thought to my choice. I had already been accepted into 2 schools at that point last year and had 2 ranked at the top of the waitlist (so I was pretty sure I'd get into them too, which I did). I didn't just want to see the building or the staff, but I wanted a chance to meet some classmates. I got a chance to see more about the plans for the school, and to meet some of my future classmates - all of which helped me make a more informed decision.

This year's second look day will be so much better. You'll see a finished building (it was still in construction when I came last year). You'll get to see the curriculum in action. You'll get to talk to current students. You'll meet other people who have been admitted. And because the school is hosting "Art Hop" during the evening after second look day, you'll get a chance to see the community too (pdf brochure: http://www.kalamazooarts.org/sites/kalamazooarts.org/file/Art Hop/Brochure/2015/Art Hop_March 2015 Final Web.pdf )... Art Hop is this really cool free monthly event in Kalamazoo in which local businesses and institutions host local artists. It turns downtown into a giant art gallery. People walk around, most of the businesses provide free food, drinks, some even provide free wine. Some students always go each month, so we'll be offering to bring people along with us.

I personally think second look days (in general) are a great chance to get to know the school a little better. What's nice about WMed's second look day is that it helps you get to know the community better, too. If you do decide to come, I recommend trying to stay Friday night if you can, and maybe think about apartment hunting on Saturday. Either way, if you've been accepted and you come to Second Look day it will be loads of fun and I think it will be useful too.

Any other questions about that stuff? If I know the answer, I'll give it.

There is a facebook group for accepted students. If you've been accepted, shoot Jean an email or check your email for the "update email" she sends out. Either way should get you to the facebook group. A couple current students are in there too (including myself... you'll be able to pick me out easily, I'm the aggressively helpful one).

I can still log in. Maybe you should wait a couple hours and try again.

WHOA I have not been getting alerts for this thread. Congrats to everyone who got accepted! I will be at second look day and will absolutely be attending in the fall!

has anyone gotten need-based financial aid info yet?

I have not. Have you turned in your Needs Access yet? I am waiting to get my taxes back to fill in all of my info.

Yeah, I submitted my needaccess and sent in my tax returns already

Check the financials tab on the portal. Before I wthdrew I looked at mine and it was different than the merit scholarship I received, so I'm assuming it also had the need based factored into it.

Yeah, mine is still the merit scholarship only. Was your need base significantly more than the merit scholarship? My merit scholarship isn't exactly the biggest..

I would just call in and chat with the financial aid director, she's the only one who could have any insight to help with this 😛

Has anyone done any research into private lenders? I'm just starting to look into this, and I've checked out the lenders on the FASTchoice service, but I was wondering if anyone has any info on other lenders...

It was more than double, but that isn't saying much because my merit one wasn't anything crazy lol

It's been awfully quiet this week!

Has any info come out about Second Look?

All the students who got accepted should have gotten an email invite; if you get accepted before the day, I'm pretty sure Jean will send you more info about it!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, Agent Macklin!

Ah, I'm slow - didn't realize waitlisted applicants didn't receive invitations!

Back to twiddlin' my thumbs. 🙂

@tellme_areyoufree @Captain Toad I'm just curious if you guys, or any other current students use Anki and how you feel like it works with the curriculum organized the way it is. Thanks! 🙂

I do use anki (I don't know if Toad does). I find it great. It's important to know what's important to anki and what's not good for anki... but anki is a powerful tool (in my opinion) that has helped me a lot.
