2015-2016 Boston University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I didn't write anything lol I feel like it would have just been repeating my primary and they really emphasized that it's optional. Like after reading their instructions I was like daaaamn okay I won't write anything!

is it recommended to fill out the personal narrative essay to try to get past the II screening since BU gets 10k+ apps? I can always add stuff but I'm pretty sure my main theme is apparent from my primary, though it may not be strung together as well.

Did you end up not entering anything for either essay? I am not sure I have anything more to add.

Would it be appropriate to classify history courses under the humanities section of the grid?

I mean... they're technically considered social science courses.

Thoughts?

...???????? History is a humanities subject...
-smh- 🙁 posts like this make me sad

Does anyone know if Boston U accept community college courses? I have taken Physics at a community college and now I am unsure whether I should apply here. Especially since according to their secondary, community college is not a preferred institution.

*shrugs*

Thanks for the answer, though.
Lol her status is "I'm hot...you're not" and half of her posts on this forum are disparaging remarks to other posters....I wouldn't take it personally. If she keeps it up, she'll be banned soon.

Does anyone know if Boston will put an application on hold if there are pending MCAT scores?

Does anyone know if we can update our preferences about whether or not we want our app reviewed before our letters are in? Can we change our mind after we submit the secondary and have them update the preferences? Thanks

So, I have an IA that sounds horrible on paper, but it really wasn't that bad. I gave an honest description in my primary that I do not think paints me in a bad light. Should I withdraw my app if I have to get a Dean's Certification Letter that may make things sound worse than they were?

I don't want to pay for the secondary if this ruins my chances.

so when they say advanced training in the art, music, or sports... what constitutes advanced?..

I think it's open to interpretation... but I would think playing competitively in a sport (like in a league or for high school/college), playing an instrument for a long time, or spending significant time on maybe art/dance/theater/photography/ etc. as a serious hobby would count?

well shet. just reread my essay and i found 2 types... TWO. that sucks, I really liked this school. oh well

Any MD/MBA's here? My plan is to apply to MBA after potential matriculation, and it's not entirely clear if we're supposed to check MD/MBA or not if we're not applying to the dual degree until later. Some schools have you check it just to indicate interest. I emailed them but no answer yet; anybody here know?

looks like from the site that doing the MBA apps while in medical school is the way to go. Unless you've already taken the GRE/GMAT and have your separate application ready to submit to the business school right now

Just got an email saying my app is on hold bc they don't have my mcat scores?! I took it may 22. Anyone else??

This happened to me with a differen school. Apparently it's something wrong on the school's end and not AAMC's.

One of my letter writers teaches at BUSM and I had him as a professor at their School of Public Health...does this count as a personal connection or would including it just be redundant?

From what I know, personal connection refers to when a family member has gone to that particular school.

Can anyone post the link to the portal?

I took the April MCAT and the portal still shows a missing MCAT

I took the MCAT in May and the portal says they still don't have my scores. BUT I got an email saying my app was complete and my current status says complete and under review. I think it may just be a glitch.

Did you guys include AP credit for the grid? If so, did you count Bio as 2 semesters and Chem as 2 semmesters + upper level coursework?

I think by advanced they mean at a professional level. For sports, that would mean you are a NCAA athlete or compete at levels higher than intermurals/intra-school leagues. Music I would assume would be part of a professional orchestra/band, be part of a label, or anything higher than a hobby.

I'm sure they aren't too strict, and this is just my opinion on what would be worth mentioning.

guys not sure this has been answered yet....I haven't been verified yet, and I can't submit my BU app until I am? =(

anyone having major technical difficulties submitting today?

I don't think you should withdraw the app...they probably ask for the letter to make sure that your account doesn't differ wildly. Of course 'your side of the story' and 'their side of the story' may vary slightly, but they have both available to read.

I'm having issues figuring out how to send in the explanatory letter...all of their correspondence goes on and on about how I have to mail it in to a particular address, but mine is in the AMCAS letter service. I was trying to be proactive, since I knew some schools would require one of these letters, but they make it seem as if I will have to go get the dean to reprint and resign the letter on letterhead (the original is signed and on letterhead, but it got sent in) and mail it directly to BU? Whyyyyyyy?!?

Did anyone upload their CV? When I first looked at the secondary I thought there was a space, but don't see it now?

I'm wondering what exactly constitutes biological sciences when BU asks you to fill in the number of semesters you have taken. I was a psych BS major with numerous neuroscience courses. I also did BU's Masters in Medical Sciences (MAMS) program where I took histology, physiology, immunology, and pharmacology. Do these count as biological sciences, or are they merely referring to intro bio courses/anything actually with biology in the course title? This question likely applies to other secondaries as well.

Always content over actual title. You get a chance to explain at the bottom.

Also what exactly is meant by semesters? For example, I took multiple humanities courses in the same semester (literature/writing, history, and theology)- does that still only count as one semester? Or should I count the semesters as the number of courses I took (3 courses during that one semester)?
