2015-2016 University of Arizona Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So basically, chances are the "hold" that some us have including myself is really a rejection.

Great.

Not really. If you just look at pages 6-9 of last years thread you'll find quite a few people who were offered interviews after initial holds.

We still have a chance! Gotta keep that positive attitude 🙂

Hm, I wonder where people with no contact fit in then?

"Our medical school is currently unable to extend an interview invitation to you, however; we have determined that you are a competitive candidate to continue to be considered at this time." - This is a "hold", right?

For everyone that got the "hold" status, what were your complete dates?

Same here. OOS without ties. LizzyM 69-70. Submitted on 07/23

Just got the hold status. OOS, no ties, LizzyM ~69, Submitted 7/16.
Congrats to all of you who got interviews! Hopefully I will be taken of this "hold" status soon for an interview.

Lots of holds it looks like. Has anyone actually gotten a rejection lol? I think they just put everyone on hold.

Hi there ! I am flying to Phoenix prior to the interview . Do any of you guys know an easy and cheap way to go from Phoenix to Tucson ?
Greyhound usually costs around $20, if you're interested in that. I'm sure there are other shuttles from Phoenix to Tucson, but Greyhound is the cheapest.

Like I said, when I looked through the old thread, no one got outright rejected.

@sharkbyte Thanks for answering my question, I appreciate it. Sorry about your rejection man, but good luck on the rest of your cycle! 🙂

When were you all complete? Even though this sucks, I appreciate the timely response by U of A. Better for them to let us know now rather than string us along until May!

There are no rejections (or wait lists) until March (or in the case of last year, April), when final decisions are made. Holds ≠ rejections.

@kikiriki sure, but lets be real here, if you are placed on a hold, chances are more likely that you'll NOT get an interview than you will. Otherwise, they would have just interviewed us straight up.

Arizona places everyone that eventually gets rejected on hold first. It's really nothing special.

Just gotta stay positive man 🙂. Stressful enough as it is already

+1 for the hold. Yest around 6PM. OOS

So it's either hold or II .. this sucks lol i got the hold email too.. anyone get an II???

Man, this whole way of doing things kinda makes me want to withdraw from this school...lol

Yes that's part of their unethical trolling. They literally don't reject anyone until March. Also dude every single post interview hold is titled "acceptance update".

I honestly believe UAZ - tucson's admissions team pulls this **** just to **** with us even more.

If everyone is "so competitive" they should just give everyone interviews so they can move onto the next stage of this torture here.

I know. My heart stopped when I saw the email with the word "interview," but then it continued with "we are unable..." Not nice Tucson!

Just got the hold email too. I'm curious as to how many people last year with this email ended up getting an II but I'm too lazy to fish through last year's thread. Anyone else know? Lol

So basically, chances are the "hold" that some us have including myself is really a rejection.

Great.

I wouldn't give up hope yet! Last year I got the "hold email" Nov 17th then on Nov 20th, I received an II.

I have yet to receive any hold email this year but I wasn't complete until 8/2 this year so maybe I will get a "hold" soon.

This school deserves all the salt they get and then some for the **** they pull on applicants. It's totally justified.

Here's how I see it. It seems a lot of people are angry/frustrated/annoyed/whatever with their wording and their apparent "stringing-along" of students. Maybe that's enough justification to get angry, that varies from person to person.

However, I see a school that is at least attempting to communicate with their applicants. Maybe getting a hold status does mean that you have a lower chance of receiving an II, but at least they are actually constantly going over your application again. A 5 minute dive into the older threads will show that plenty of people who were put on hold received II's later. So what if they tell everyone that they're a competitive candidate? These admissions committees are dealing with hundreds of applicants each (on average) and they're doing what they can to communicate well and keep applicants in the loop. There are other schools who don't send any kind of communication for months, schools who will reject a student and not notify them of ANYTHING until March. I'd much rather at least know I still have a chance at an II and I'm still being reviewed for a possible II later on in the cycle. But hey, that's just me 😉. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I'm just voicing a different perspective.

You are telling me there are medical schools that will not respond to your entire application if you have been complete in July/Early August?

The only time I could see that happening is if you absolutely did not take any initiative to call them or email them to check the status of your applicaiton.

No ADCOM is perfect, but there are plenty who are worse than UA Tuscon IMHO. At least I know my file has been reviewed already and I've received a status where I still might get an II. I don't know why you keep thinking it's an absolute death sentence. Multiple people in this thread have already noted that if you look into previous threads for this school that many people who were put on hold received II's. That alone tells me that they are actually staying true to their word and are re-reviewing applications that have been put on hold. I really don't see what the problem is with them telling us that. So what if you're angry with their semantics. That doesn't mean their a poorly run school. If you check previous threads they actually published how they score applicants and the results of their admissions processes for the past 2 years.

Edit: This is about as transparent as a medical school can be IMO. I really don't understand why some people are giving them so much crap for just doing their jobs and communicating with applicants.

I've called UCSD 3 times now to see where my application is and each time I've been greeted by a certain Mr. Sanchez who sounds annoyed/tired AF and keeps telling me "there's no way I can give you an estimate regarding when you will hear from us, it could be in a day or it could take until March (or whenever their cutoff is).

I've been complete for VCU since mid-July and all I've had are a bunch of emails saying my status has been updated and the only thing that has changed is the phrase "your profile is now complete" to "your M.D. file is now complete". I've called them multiple times and they pretty much gave me the same answer as UCSD.

Well firstly I dont care as much as you think I do. Perhaps you and Monster_Cat should be duking this out on this level.

Second, I have yet to receive a single MD school invite, so I'm skeptical of this place as well.

Third, I understand what you are saying. Communication is important, but giving people false hope is seriously worse than rejecting them.

Thus I think both UCSD and U of A are both equally bad.

Side note that isnt totally relevant, but if you have the stats to actually reasonably apply to UCSD, then your optimism is going to be slightly more elevated than most of us on here.

Maybe, but he seems hell-bent on throwing salt on Tuscon and you seem more reasonable.

Well I wish you the best of luck in this cycle. I don't know where you're applying/how many schools you're applying to, but I can at least say all of my invites have been from places I least expected to receive them from. Anything can happen, just gotta stay positive.

The false hope thing is where I'm thoroughly confused. A hold isn't a death sentence, nor is it false hope. Look at pages 6-9 of last year's thread. There's probably 5-10 people on those pages alone who received II's after holds. There's definitely a chance.

You shouldn't be calling schools so much it's a really bad idea and they log ovecomminication on your app and hold it against you.

Cool. If it makes a difference, first couple of times I called were to sort out IT issues and I just threw in a query at the end. But thanks for the heads-up!

You may very well be totally right, but my MD cycle thus far has made me very skeptical.

I know holds don't mean much I got a II after a hold last year. Med schools can be way more transparent and tell you a lot more, trust me. UAZ may communicate but communication is meaningless if it's downright misleading and poorly handled. They're terrible at this.

There are plenty of schools that do better, and I haven't disclosed everything bad this place has done, but trust me this place does a terrible job handling things. I'd rather have no communication for months than be trolled,
Lied to, and mislead.

Well if that was your situation, I'm truly sorry you experienced that. Digging through old threads for Tuscon, I haven't seen anyone with such vehement misgivings regarding this school. Either way, if you are applying again this cycle, good luck and all the best to you.

Does silent rejections and hold onto all apps until then "just in case they change their minds which almost never happens" (words from the mouth of the old director of admissions).

They're atrocious

Hey, look! Common ground for us! 😀

I would like to think of it as they want to see if you're still interested in them later on before reconsidering you for interview. No use giving you an interview if you're just going to withdraw your application with them in the near future as this is especially common for OOS applicants (or IS applicants with high stats).

I got a hold email on 9/1 (Tuesday) but then an interview invite on 9/4 (Friday) - there is hope for anyone with a hold email 🙂
