2015-2016 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well guys I'm super bummed. I got an email from UA PHX today that says, "The Admissions Committee recently met and discussed your application, the results of your multiple mini-interview and letters of recommendation. At this time, the committee is requesting to keep your application active for further consideration and although not the news you likely wanted today, the request is an indication that the commitee does consider you to be a strong applicant for our medical school." They said I might hear by January 11, 2016. I'm bummed I didn't get some good news, and I'm not sure if this actually means I'm a strong applicant or not. I would think I would have been accepted like the others if I was a strong applicant. So I think this puts me in between categories, as in either between accepted or wait listed, or rejected or wait listed. Not sure how to feel about this, but I am obviously disappointed I didn't get some good news before Christmas. Congrats to everyone who got accepted today!

A couple of the current students posting in this thread have said they were retained before being admitted. We will all keep our fingers crossed for you. It's not over til it's over! :nod:

Several of my classmates (including myself) were deferred as well to future meetings before being accepted. Don't lose hope and enjoy the holidays everyone!

@TheLionheart

Do you know if the college offers scholarships to incoming students? Particularly merit, need-based, or aid geared towards OOS students?

If you contact the financial aid department they can provide the official answers--they're very friendly and informative! I can speak to really only anecdotal experiences.

Merit: I'm not sure as I wasn't the recipient of any merit aid.

Need-based: The school considers its students independents and thus do not require parental aid information when determining financial need. Unfortunately, this does not discriminate all that well from someone who comes from a very wealthy background with immense financial support and those of us who are not as fortunate.

Other aid: In past years, and for my class specifically, the IS and OOS students who applied for the FAFSA received a grant (a couple thousand for us IS and more for the OOS as their tuition is higher). I can't really speak to if this process will continue in the future. I imagine it's contingent on funds being available. Also, there is a General Scholarship Fund that the school develops over the course of the year. M1 year begins in early July/late June. Around this time a General Scholarship application goes out where you answer a few essay questions. As funds become available, a committee reviews these scholarship applications and disburses them by committee decision.

Overall, unless you're a rock star applicant that's holding multiple acceptances to schools that really want you (or are accepted to schools with massive endowments and thus considerable financial aid) or come from a wealthy background, you should just assume that you'll be taking out substantial loans to pay for your medical education. That doesn't necessarily mean taking out the full COA in loans every year--I most definitely don't take out that much.

@TheLionheart

Slightly disappointing, but I appreciate the reply!

No problem! Just keep in mind that indebtedness has a lot to do with your personal decisions and situation. I chose to live somewhere a little farther and not as nice as many of my classmates to save drastically on rent expenses. Obviously tuition is the big hitter in terms of expenditures, but everything else quickly adds up. That's where I think most of us normal folk can make a difference, in all the extra expenses.

@TheLionheart

Definitely, I plan on cutting where I can at any school I go. I am just trying to compare financials at my accepted schools and I really liked UA, but no scholarships may be a deal breaker! 🤢

Hi at @UA-COM
I have been complete for quite some time with no decision.. I really want an II and getting nervous because it's been so silent ... When do you guys hope to have decisions for all completed apps by? Also, is it possible my app hasn't even bee. Reviewed yet even though I was complete back In August ?

I'm in the same boat as you- been complete since August and waiting to hear back! I remember reading a few pages earlier in the thread that the fact that we haven't heard back yet means our applications are still being reviewed/considered. I think the "no news is good news" saying is especially true here at UA COM –Phoenix. And I also remember reading a post from Dr. Cunningham that each application is reviewed three times before a decision is made and that interview invites are probably going to be extended into January. Plus UA COM –Phoenix seems to have a very fair and thorough review process so I wouldn't worry too much about the possibility that our apps haven't been reviewed at all, the admissions committee is probably still going through all the apps they received. Fingers crossed for both of us! Enjoy the holidays in the meantime 🙂

I am still unsure if the interview tracker takes into account the IIs that have been declined by applicants. @UA COM Phoenix, could you shed some light on this? Are there 21 IIs left or are there 21 plus the number that have been declined by applicants? I would think there would be at least 15-20 IIs declined throughout the entire admissions cycle, but maybe my judgment is clouded by my desperation.

For anyone marked complete, does your portal also say "Interview: Not Scheduled Yet"?

@UA COM Phoenix

Are you able to comment on if merit aid (recruitment aid?) is offered to incoming students?

Yes, and very little. Nearly all scholarships are reserved for current students, but our development efforts are always working on scholarships dor incoming and current students.

Has heard anyone heard back recently about revisit dates? I got the email and requested to come back for a couple of the later dates in January, and I still haven't heard anything back.

Does anyone know if they are receptive to pre-II application updates? If so, what email should we send the update to?

Hi Dr. Cunningham,

Do you have a time table on when interview invites will be sent out for the Pathways program? Thanks!

azdevil21- I have the same question. Thanks for posting.

We have just begun reviewing applications - one group will be invited for the Feb 8 interview day and the other group for the Feb 22 interview day - these invites will be sent at least two weeks prior to each day.
Thank you for the response!

What is the latest on the status of the school in terms of accreditation? I am so happy to see something is finally being done. The 4 docs I know closely involved with the school are sick of this "holistic" review process when it comes to selecting students. There should be one type of professional separating the strong candidates from the weak - a physician. Ms Cunningham (and I do stress the Ms), care to comment?

UA med alum are really tired of this...

PhDs are normally afforded the designation of "Dr." as well, since they complete doctoral degrees. This forum has thus far been very respectful and I'm sure we would all appreciate continuation of that respect. Thanks and best wishes.

He/she made a throwaway, dummy account specifically for the purpose of posting an inflammatory, vague remark for an unclear purpose to draw a response. Let's not feed the troll.

Hi everyone.

Just a friendly warning that this is a professional forum, so we expect our members to communicate in a respectful and professional manner.

Thank you!

Just got the rejection email. 🙁 Pretty disappointed about it, but good luck to those still in the running!

Rejected as well! This one stings. I absolutely loved this school.

Thanks but I think a rejection coming my way.. At this point I think if you have t heard you been rejected
I believe Dr. Cunningham said interview invites were still being given out this week (the last week). I am not sure if they have already been given out, but hopefully there's still a chance!

I haven't been rejected yet. Complete mid September. Hopefully that means I am still in the running! lol talk about optimism.

+1 right there with you, although my optimism is dwindling.

Longtime lurker but joining to commiserate. AZ Resident, complete since mid-August. Haven't heard a peep since then.

Admittedly the two apparent students (alum?) at UA Phoenix posting such negative and disrespectful discourse in the past few pages of this thread makes me wonder about the student culture at this university. This isn't something I've seen on forums for other universities that I've interviewed/been accepted. It makes me a bit apprehensive to pursue this option further, even though I thought the school was beautiful and put together when I interviewed there. Is there a 3rd or 4th year reading this thread that can comment on the culture of learning and respect within? A discussion through PM would be cool too.

I was also wondering if any current student can highlight on what they think of the UA Phx faculty. At the time of my interview, 8/10 of my interviewers were absolutely amazing people but the other two were extremely rude and not in the way they were just asking tough questions. Thanks for any of your input.

As I have offered before, if you are a Phoenix student and wish to share your thoughts on the admissions process, stop by my office.

I encourage anyone to reach out to our student leaders for accurate and honest information about our program. You can find out more by visiting the student-led website at www.uacomps.org

Sadly, anonymous forums are abused and this is why I joined the SDN community several years ago. I am happy to continue responding to thoughtful questions, which comprises 99.% of this thread.

Our student body does give harsh feedback (very active voice in your curriculum), but what sets them apart from these recent posts is that do so professionally and constructively. Our current SDN student contributors and admissions members are unaware of this person (or persons).

Thank you very much for this information Dr. Cunningham. I appreciate your transparency on the process, and willingness to provide resources at every turn in this forum.
