2015-2016 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No phone call this morning, so I suspect an email of one kind or another is coming my way.

Congratulations to any who received good news today from UA COMP!

I didn't get a call until 6:30PM - so don't sweat it yet! 🙂

Got another deferred email today, kind of bummed but grateful to still be in the running for this awesome school!!

The Feb 8 admission decisions were sent out, as scheduled, and all under consideration are aware of the meeting outcome.
Thank you! Appreciate your contribution and support to SDN community. Thank you for the transparency. In the same spirit could you share if there is an equally fair process to pick applicants from the wait list because I heard it is a luck of draw, which I hope is not true.

Definitely not a random drawing from a hat! We review the wait list each time a vacancy occurs and identify the next best fit for the entering class.

Hi Dr. Cunningham (@UA COM Phoenix )-

If I understood correctly, Feb 22 is the date that deferments will be done away with and the school will move to a true wait list. Is this correct? Also, with that move, will we immediately see an associated increased rate of attrition?

Feb 22 is the final admission committee meeting wherein the last round of regular accepts will be offered. The additional outcomes of the meeting include the standard release, or rejection, as well as the announcement of the alternate list (aka wait list).

Attrition may occur as we near the April 30 deadline and into the summer, leading to June 27 when students arrive for Orientation Week.

Very succinct and helpful answer, thank you very much!

As expected, the school has been granted provisional accreditation by the LCME (up from preliminary), with the next step being full accreditation. Here is an email we received from Dean Flynn:

Dear Students,

Dr. Chadwick and I are very pleased to share with you that the accreditation body for medical schools, the LCME, has informed us that they have moved our school forward to Provisional Accreditation status, wonderfully aligning us for our next site visit for Full Accreditation. Thank you all for your ongoing dedication to our college and our collective commitment to excellence.

We hope you have a nice remainder of your day.

Drs. Chadwick and Flynn

You beat me to it!

Congrats to all of those accepted! You're getting closer and closer to Day One! Who has general med school questions that I, an MS1, might be able to answer?

Heyyyyy I got my official offer letter in the mail today. I just love this school! I love that it was personalized, not a generic letter sent out to everyone. It made me smile and my little heart warm. I am so excited to be going here for school. 😍😍😍

Any general tips and advice?

Enjoy your time between now and then, don't try to pre study anything. At all.

Come to second look if you're able, it's a blast and you'll meet many of your future classmates.

There will be several adjustment periods in the first few months of medical school.

Don't freak out too much about exams. We all do from time to time--especially early on--but putting in the time, studying, and doing your best is all you have control over. Many of us slip up on an exam at some point (with slipping up being a relative term), but luckily, you have the safety net of P/F, multiple exams in the block, and other school policies that help students.

Med school, at least so far for my good friends and I, has been a good time. You're going to meet many talented, intelligent, and downright awesome people.

My personal opinion: Take the exam on Friday, not Sunday. You will do just fine on Friday, and then have your weekend to enjoy and do whatever you want with. That being said, if you need to take it on Sunday for peace of mind or due to circumstances earlier in the week, do it. It's why the option is there.

You're also going to receive a ton of advice about school, lectures, specific blocks, etc. once you matriculate from older students. It's the med school way.

My biggest advice would to just get as much help as you can from as many resources as you can, and try studying several different ways until you find the method that works well for you. You will learn SO much in medical school that you really need to reach out and get help... you can't do it all alone. Also, try to relax and stay sane! Still make time for all of the things you love to do (maybe not all, but a lot of them!). My personal experience hasn't been too bad. I still get to have some fun! I think the biggest thing I wish I knew in August as opposed to now is just how to stay organized!! I think I spent way too much time the first semester trying to keep on track of everything, so definitely keep a planner with you and write everything you need to do down! Also, definitely agree that taking tests on Friday is the way to go! Yes, you can probably learn more if you wait until Sunday, but it is definitely not worth it! You truly need Saturday and Sunday as a way to 1) work on other things and 2) just have fun!! Pretend like Sunday tests don't exist and only use them as a backup plan if you get sick or something. To sum it up... medical school has so far been a much better experience than what I imagined it would be when I started! You just have to take some time to find your groove.

Thank you Dr Cunningham!
Whatever the outcome , your constant communication helped many to get through this arduous journey.
I am wondering how large the waitlist would be after today's meeting. Thx.

We tend to build a wait list of at least 40. Looking about the same this year.

Have the final decisions come out?
Thx.

My heart just skipped a beat- I just got a rejection email from UA Tucson (I already got one from them on Friday, so I figured it wasn't from them.) I was certain for a moment that it was from UA COMP- whew (momentary sigh of relief)

EDIT: NOT cool Tucson! Just got a second rejection email from them for the day.

EDIT again: And another email from them. Their email service must be in fibrillation.

Nope, you're not alone 🙂 I haven't taken a breath in, like, 20 minutes! #dyinghere #lettheendcomeswiftly #thisfeelslikethedayIwaitedformyMCATscore #exceptworse

Now that the final round of regular acceptances is over, not sure how much movement to expect on the wait list. I think upto 120 offers could have already been made for 80 spots.
Thoughts?

The alternate email had this bit of information to share:
"Historically, alternate movement has been zero to 15 seats "

And from earlier in this thread, Dr. Cunningham has indicated that there will be ~40 individuals on the wait list.

Hello,

I am wondering if the calls for the Pathway Scholars Program will still be made on March 24th or if the committee would be meeting earlier than that?

Thanks!

The results of the meeting will be sent on March 24 as scheduled.

Has anyone been able to find the comprehensive list of the match results for this year? I saw an article about 1/3 doing family medicine and 1/3 also staying in AZ. But, I can't seem to find the whole list.

I saw the list posted on the website but cant seem to find it either. From what I remember, the match seemed strong. A couple students each matched into neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, ophthalmology and I saw a couple matches in vascular and ENT. There were a lot of people who did general surgery, radiology, EM, psych as well as plenty who went into IM, FM and OB-GYN.

Thanks for sending out the list! I have watched the COM-Phoenix Match Day video at least 30 times! It just makes me smile to see such a happy place. Helps me remain motivated!

To be fair, I also watched the Tucson Match Day video (caution: super long and poor quality). I stopped watching it though after I heard one of their students make a comment about Phoenix. I know the campuses must "compete," but to call Phoenix a, and I quote, "borderline accredited medical school" is just poor form.

Well for such a borderline school, we seem to be doing pretty well year in and year out in the match, with increasingly competitive locations and repeat matches (meaning the programs like our students and keep wanting more). Let Tucson think what they will--we're different, independent programs and we do just fine for ourselves.

But yes, match day was awesome. Even as first years we attended, and although we don't know many of the 4th years, it was still a happy, emotional experience to watch them read their matches out loud.

No email or phone call, I'm so nervous! I just keep praying that my dream will come true.
