2015-2016 University of Arizona - Phoenix Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nothing yet, but it looks like UA COM Phx just posted an update. We should hear an admissions decision later today. Let's keep our fingers crossed! Good luck to everyone!
Thanks for the information, keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

Just found out my friend was accepted to the Pathway Scholars Program this afternoon! So excited for her and everyone else who received the good news today.

At the risk of sounding like a pest, has anyone heard back?

Just got the rejection email for the Pathways program
If it's any consolation, I did better last year than this year. I went from alternate last year, to completely rejected this year 🙁

So sorry to hear that. I'm feeling very emotional and sad right now but we can't give up, just have to keep pushing until we get in somewhere. If it's your dream to become a medical doctor (as it is) you WILL get there, this is just a bump in the road.

I got rejected too. So bummed. Fortunately, I have an acceptance at Midwestern postbacc program as my backup. But, UA was definitely my dream choice.

First of all, thank you for your beautiful message- it couldn't have been more perfect. I can't seem to stop crying but I know this too shall pass and we will all persevere. You're going to make an awesome physician and I wish you nothing but the very best.

Sending you light and peace. It sounds like you have a great back up plan, that was smart. I'm thinking of doing the MPH with an emphasis in epidemiology , at UA in Tucson. I get letters from them almost everyday. This might increase my chances. Conversely, I think I might also apply to the PharmD program in Tucson and/or Phoenix. My grades for the prereqs for this program were 4.0. Unfortunately, my MCAT is where I choked and it worked against me. Again, I wish you well and thanks for your kind words and support.

Declining my OOS spot - hope someone who really wants it can get it!

I posted this in the Tucson thread--but there was an article in the UA paper containing a Q&A with medical admissions. Different school--but might help nonetheless.

To those who didn't get accepted to Pathways, keep your heads up! This won't be the end! I know tons of friends who applied with me and didn't get accepted anywhere, but the very next year, it was a whole different story! Keep going! Use this year off to do something amazing to talk about in an interview next year! It doesn't even need to be medically related, just go do something you're passionate about and have some fun. Don't beat yourselves up. Getting accepted to medical school requires a lot of luck; I'm sure you all work hard and deserve to be here.

Thank you for your encouraging words! Perseverance is key.

Decided to go to Creighton at last. Was discouraged after talking to many friends about U of A Phoenix. Not the best academic suite.

Do you mind elaborating on this? Can you share what you heard from your friends regarding the school? Wondering why you think it is not the best academic suite. Please feel free to PM if you don't want to share publicly. I am genuinely interested to hear.

Looks like quite a few folks withdrew. I wonder if it has to do with the uncertainty of the future of the school since they just lost their Dean.

I personally loved the school and the students, but I also withdrew this week. Best of luck to everyone matriculating here!

For those who have concerns since Dr. Flynn is leaving.......think about this. The average tenure of a medical school dean is around 4-6 years. Dr. Flynn has been with the university around 8 or 9....something like that. What he set up is in place. The infrastructure is there and its sound. Also, we have a good interim dean while we search for another one. The school isn't going to crumble because he leaves. We still have everyone else.

As for academics, I just started my third year and I couldn't have been more happy with how I was prepared with both my doctoring class and my academic blocks. I'm only at the end of my second week but I feel like a true competent member of the team. I'm very proud of how the school has prepared me for rotations. If anyone has any specific questions about the first two years or about rotations or life here in general, please feel free to private message me. I'm off this weekend so I'll be around my computer.

For those who decided to go somewhere else, the best of luck in all that you do.

Seeing all these people withdraw their acceptances makes me wonder why state schools like Phoenix and Tucson give out so many acceptances to people who have MCAT scores/stats that are far higher than the general average of matriculants at those schools. I understand a school wants to accept people they think are most qualified, but many people with MCAT scores 35+ are NOT going to state schools. They apply to these schools as safeties. State schools therefore reject people with scores a little lower, and accept students who end up going elsewhere.

Does anyone have any advice for receiving feedback for your application? I really wish it was easier to ask UA COM Phx about our personal application, because pre-health offices sometimes give generic advice.

The admission process does not view MCAT as the predictor to success.

The average of our "post-accepted withdrawn" students is 31 --- range from 26 to 36. The average of our pre-interview rejected students (AZ) is 26 --- range from 11 to 38. Take out the lower scores (below 22) and the average is 29.

Statistically, no difference in MCAT scores in either population.

There is much, more more involved in the selection beyond one test, and that is good news for both ends of the test curve.

Withdrawing my acceptance. Reading about Dr. Flynn's departure and talking to current Phoenix med students about their own uncertainties towards the program, I think it's in my best interest to withdraw and go elsewhere. Best of luck to everyone and even more so to students attending Phoenix in the Fall.

Dean departure, accreditation issues, and expensive OOS tuition... Withdrawing my acceptance here.

To be clear, there are no accreditation issues. We've been advanced to the next stage and are on track for full accreditation soon. Good luck wherever you end up.
