2015-2016 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering, are intent to registers like the one you have received from UC Irvine binding? If they give a 2 week deadline, I would assume not, but I am not sure. Is the Intent to Register simply a way of saying you accept their offer of acceptance and will consider it until April 30th when you have to decide?

Thanks!
Yeah, it's really poorly named. All you're doing is accepting the offer. (FWIW I declined Irvine's so hopefully that means there's another spot for one of you!)

Thanks for the info! So basically if you think there's a chance you will go to UCI, accept the "intent to register"? What made you decide against Irvine?

Yeah, that's how I'm treating them!

I mostly don't like the location. I really can't see myself being happy in Southern California (kinda knew that going in, but I figured I'd give it another chance). I was also put off by the separation between the campus and the medical center. I like the fact that at other schools you can just drop by the medical center to shadow and get clinical exposure. Also, I'm really hoping not to buy a car for med school, which would be impossible at Irvine.

Okay, thank you! So makes sense to accept an intent to register.

Got it! Yeah everyone has their own preferences with location which is a very important factor. The hospitals are pretty far but hopefully that will be a small inconvenience. Congrats on wherever else you got in!

quiet day today, still waiting on news :/ guess they're taking a break from calling people

From the 9/18 cohort. Portal changed to accepted. Got excited. Admissions removed the status back to nothing. Called in and adcom said they made a mistake, and (their words not mine) "at this time you have not been accepted." My application is still in review. Stings a lot.

Sorry, that really sucks 🙁 Hope you do ultimately get accepted!

question regarding the second half of the structured interview: was the point to answer questions as fast as possible?
I feel like I took my sweet time to explain my answers and am worried that I didn't get through enough questions (and I'm super paranoid about it as a result).

The point was to get to know you as a person in a semi-informal setting. Hard to mess it up I think.

Waitlisted via portal. Oh well!
hey I hope this is not too much to ask, but can you screen shot where it says you are waitlisted? I cant find any info regarding status idk where to look

interviewer thank you notes for uci, y/n?
Yes for faculty interview, forgot for student interview and regret not sending one. Accepted in the end. They don't need to be long, just thank them for their time and say that you enjoyed learning more about the school.

Hi friends! MD/PhD applicant here. Has anyone who has not yet heard back from UCI (secondary complete, but no II or rejection) actually clicked on the link that says "After Nov. 15, click here to activate your UCINetId" or something similar? What exactly does the account mean/do?

Best of luck to everyone throughout this process!! It's a long and tough time - hang in there! 😀

Funny you ask...I did this with the correct ID and birthday and they said my birthday was wrong (and I know I didn't get my birthday wrong ok LOL) so I think we are not supposed to/cannot actually activate it. But I could be wrong - I didn't bother retrying after that.

I activated mine, even though I haven't received a secondary yet. Haha. I guess it's just nice to have that account ready in case you get far along enough in this process to consider financial aid from Irvine?

For those of us who have been complete since July, do you think we actually have a chance this late in the game? December is coming in hot !

I'm still waiting for secondary. Called last week, the lady who I spoke with told me to hang tight because they are still sending out secondaries. Its almost December tho lol
Same here just got rejected from Davis and ucla pre-secondary...hoping it's not the same for UCI

Is UCI receptive to post-interview, pre-decision updates?

I would suggest sending an update after you hear back and you've been waitlisted. Even if you are waitlisted, don't send an update until after April 30 when they start to process the waitlist. Good luck!

Has anyone who interviewed mid october heard back? In the interview, they told us that we ll hear back around thanksgiving.

hey guys, yes the same for me and i did also get rejected from davis and la, i dont know why they would us secondaries but as an alum, i definately would compelte it even though there is little chance of return. it hurts me alot because im actually an alumni

I know for a fact that mid-oct interviewees have gotten acceptance calls.

Accepted today, interviewed on 10/20 for any of you who are anxious to hear back! So excited to have the opportunity to stay in CA if that's what I decide on!

Edit: via phone call from Dr. Peterson, who was extremely kind and enjoyable to have the conversation with.

So is 11/4 the next interview date up for decisions? Anybody know when the committee meets?

I know for the 11/2 group, Dean P told us we'll be hearing back "hopefully sometime before Christmas," so it's probs soon...

Hey all, once accepted, is there any deadline to when we have to decide to enroll?

got the email two days ago OOS applicant. was hoping for an interview. Irvine was one of my reach schools

still waiting for a secondary 🙁
got rejected by all UCs except here. why is it so hard to stay in-state 😢 ???
Portal shows primary received 8/19 but no update since then. This is so odd because I heard back from every other UC whether it was an II or rejection except UCI. Pure silence...Do they send pre-secondary rejections? I'm curious.

Consider yourself still in the running. I got a secondary about 2 weeks after sending my AMCAS, and then was promptly rejected about 2 weeks later after sending the secondary in.

I know someone who got a secondary from UCR this week after being verified in July.

Anything is possible with University of California.

The structured interview is more or less to get to know your personality. Note-taking wasn't really necessary, since the questions were more for the AdComs to know who you are and how you react.

Is the format similar to that of traditional MMIs wherein you're given 2 minutes to read the prompt/scenario, enter a room to discuss w/ the interviewer, and then rotate? Or is it more similar to a traditional interview in that one person will be asking you the several behavioral questions?

Thanks!
