2015-2016 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can any current students speak to the grading basis here? Is it just pass/fail or are there certain levels (i.e. high pass, pass, etc)?

Year 1 is P/F and Year 2 is H/P/F. The pre-clinical component accounts for a certain percentage of your overall rank. The ranking is broken down into quartiles rather than specifics. The majority of your rank still comes from how you perform during the clinical component. Got this info from my interview day and from current students. From I've heard, the H/P/F creates a slightly more stressful environment than true P/F schools but the overall class dynamic is still relatively relaxed.

I interviewed for the MSTP back in January, and still haven't heard anything. Does this mean that I'm automatically placed on some sort of waitlist? Does Irvine only let you know if you've been accepted/rejected?

I can't speak for MSTP's but I know that for regular MD you either get accepted or waitlisted, and acceptances go out via phone call. I got mine on a Sunday afternoon.

Lots of people after my interview date were hearing back, so I followed up with the admissions office. They sounded confused about my status and file, leading me to think I had been forgotten about somehow and in the end wait listed. Not MSTP though. Waited over 2 months after my interview date

So... Crickets I'm guessing? :dead:

Looks like it. During our interview day it appeared the Dean was already concerned about a set back with the whole getting back to us interviewees thing... I'm not mad, it's just keeping me up at night haha! So nervous. She did say they wanted to send out 30-40 acceptances out before April 30th. And since two interview groups haven't heard back yet...looks like they're having a hard time deliberating which half of us will get that coveted golden ticket.

Just speculation of course. 🙂

Waitlisted just now! Here's to hoping I get off... What's the waitlist movement like at Irvine?

Hi everyone. Has anyone from the 3/7 group heard anything yet (waitlist or acceptance)?

Any 2/22ers still waiting to hear back? Or have they moved onto the 3/7ers?

For people that have gotten the waitlist e-mail, does your online status portal say "waitlisted" or is it blank?

I was waitlisted a few months ago and found out through the portal before receiving the e-mail, so I'm pretty sure it says it on the portal. If it's blank, there probably isn't a decision released yet. Best of luck to you guys, I'll eventually be withdrawing!

Since it is already Tuesday evening and we haven't heard, does that mean that we won't hear at all this week? April 30this so soon

It's disappointing that so many schools can't stick to the timeline they give out when releasing decisions. Especially at this time of year.

Couldn't agree more. It is crazy that we will have to decide in less than 10 days if accepted here!

I'm honestly almost speechless how disorganized everything is. Especially for something as serious and professional as medical school. It's literally the norm for it to be like this. I hope it gets better for future applicants.

How can UCSD turn their decisions around in 5 days and most schools function similar to UCI. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

From last year's thread I gathered that this late in the cycle they have meetings on Wednesday and Thursday. That makes sense since us wait listed peeps heard back last Friday. I'm assuming the remaining people will hear back this Friday or sometime this weekend.

The application cycle is frustrating. To be fair to UCI tho Dean Peterson did foresee that they'd be a bit late getting back to us and stated it explicitly in our session.

Also, from what I remember she told us they only had 30 acceptances left to give (before April 30th). And they hadn't even been through the 2/22 group! I'm guessing around... 12 or 13 of our group got outright accepted. Which is crazy! 30 out of the 80 or more remaining candidates in the cycle got outright accepted. The application cycle is so competitive and so insane.

It's almost over though homies. Come what may over the next couple of months before the inevitable July 10th (or somewhere around there) deadline for the cycle. I'm happy most of us have acceptances already! Hopefully we'll be able to make it to California but if not... We're still gonna be doctors! We'll make it where we need to be in the end.

Received an e-mail saying that my application has not gone to the admissions committee yet and they will get back to me by Friday April 29th. Anyone else get this too?

I did not receive an email like that. Was this in response to an email you sent them or did you just get it out of the blue?

I didn't get it either! Sounds like they are telling you that you will have 1 day to decide between schools if admitted. So start thinking about it! Haha

I never got that email either...what the heck is going on? haha

Just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck refreshing their email and checking for missed calls at work today.
