2015-2016 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

OOS II!! LizzyM 70.

Applied against advice of my advisor (the irony) bc I had an autobiographical PS already written. Super excited, but nervous bc post interview acceptance rate for OOS is still pretty low from what I understand.

Does anyone know if interviewing earlier here gives you higher chances to get in? Changed my interview date from late January to early January yesterday, but considering changing back.

congrats! when were you complete?

Feels bad, man. I know it's not over til it's over, but the odds at this point are so bad that I'm treating it as a soft reject. Don't want to be disappointed all over again in May.

Has anyone been notified of a 'hold for interview' on the portal? I haven't heard anything from here and I sent in my secondary early August.

Originally rejected pre-secondary at UCSD in October...but low and behold, and very much to my surprise, I received a secondary from them about a week ago. I DID retake the MCAT in September and increased my score and I guess I must have passed some sort of hard cutoff? Blew me away. OOS LizzyM ~66, URM, average MCAT average GPA, very strong EC's and LoR I think...Ironically, on the status page, I still have a date on the 'final decision letter sent' box.

Just submitted the secondary, because to hell with it. Non-trad who can, by the grace of God, afford any secondary thrown at me atm, I've got nothing to lose aside from $90.

Has this happened to anyone else? What's the takeaway here? Due to a **** MCAT score, I was an ugly duckling, but since raising that score now I am a beautiful swan? Does this mean they are really interested in me because they took the time to send me a secondary? Such a weird situation...

Unless your MCAT is >35, it is unlikely that they see you as a "beautiful swan". It just means that you make the cutoff stat-wise and they are mildly interested in you (i.e, you are in no way guaranteed an interview) Remember a secondary is still far away from any real interest being displayed by the school, that is indicated when they give you an interview.

What are UCSD's research strengths? And other things that stand out about the program?!

They are strong in many areas. Tons of research possibilities with the school itself and the surrounding institutes. I know they have very strong cancer and neuro research.

Anyone know if they have sent out post secondary rejections? I was complete at the end of August and haven't heard back... does UCSD silent reject?

I didn't get an answer before...so I shall try again!

Does anyone know if the PRIME interview is separate? And whether that is another MMI or how that works? I was a bit confused about this.

Just got an email saying I've been put on hold. They even included an apology for the silence.

Seems they'll decide whether to extend IIs or not to those on hold by late January

I think I got that same email. At least we are not rejected, right?!

rejecteddd ouch

+1 complete mid August

Another one bites the dust... rejected!!

This one stings, bros.

post-secondary rejection here too; complete August 9th; LizzyM 79

Good luck to everyone else still in the running! I heard San Diego is an amazing city to live in 😀

Rejected, complete late-august, LizzyM 73... bummed ucsd was my first choice and hometown... but hey can't ask for everything

Post-secondary rejection just now. Complete 11/3 (very late, I know)

Are the pre-interview holds pretty much rejections?

Just placed on hold post-secondary. Complete mid-Nov. I guess I joined the rest of the group from today. *sigh* =\. Does anyone know if a lot of those on hold eventually get an interview?

Rejected!!! Last year was put on hold and rejected. From what I observed last year, it's pretty much a rejection 🙁

Rejected!
Bummer, considering I got an II last year and have improved my application since.
They did seem to get a LOT more applicants this year though.
