2015-2016 University of Colorado Application Thread

Gotta say I despise the way colorado goes about the admission process
I get that you are frustrated and I am sorry. But you have to acknowledge there is no perfect system. Colorado chooses to be conservative with communication so they can evaluate the whole pool of applicants without tying their hands. This means limited acceptances and delayed notification about status. But they are realistic with you. They aren't one of the schools that waitlists everyone who isn't accepted. They really work to craft a diverse class and I can tell you it works very well. You just have to have patience and trust that they know what they are doing. In most cases the final outcome won't change too much regardless of when you are notified, so personally I would prefer they really give consideration and time, as opposed to schools like U Chicago that will reject people the morning after they submit a secondary. Sure it is stressful but oh boy will there be stress in all of our futures. So in summary, I'm sorry that it is frustrating. I get it. I went through it too. But ultimately they are doing it this way to give everyone a fair shot.

That's one end of the spectrum. Whereas Colorado is on the other end and has been silent for 7 months and not said a word.
Right. To be fair I don't understand why rejections for those who haven't gone out since interviews are over. But you can at least know that you were considered throughout and were never in the reject pile. There really isn't a lot of communication to expect. Reject or interview invite. Anything else is non-substantial. And seeing as CU evaluates all applicants until the final interview day, reject won't happen til March, so it does make sense to not hear anything if you aren't given an interview invite.

Agreed. I messaged admissions and was told those of us waiting will get rejections in the next couple of weeks. Other schools put out auto-emails the morning after interviews ended - as non-accepted applicants I'm sure they could care less what we think at this point but still frustrating. We're people too!! 😉

Exactly. I would like to just rip the band-aid off and get it over with.

Anyone know if they revisit older interviewees each meeting of would they only be talking about the 2/5 people today?

Me too!! Except I missed it and now I'm freaking out bc they won't pick up when I'm calling back!

Did it come from a really weird number? Like it was only 5 digits?? I almost didn't pick up because I was afraid it was a telemarketer haha

Got my acceptance call today! Interviewed 2/26, reapplicant, ended up on the bottom third of the waitlist last year but obviously this year went better! 😀

If I interviewed in mid-December and still haven't heard anything, safe to say that's a rejection/waitlist?

Has anyone from 2/5 heard anything? It looks like people after that date are starting to hear already so I'm getting nervous.

The area around East Middle School in Aurora, and the area around Star K Ranch in Aurora. They're not really neighborhoods I guess, just small areas within the city that feel secluded.

Could you or any other students on here shed some light on whether living in Boulder is doable? I'd like to stay since I have personal ties here but I'm worried about being isolated from the rest of the class (more so than the commute). Are class schedules generally more flexible after anatomy ends or are there basically lectures at 8 am every day?

Im not a student but have worked at anschutz and lived in Boulder and that is not a good drive in the morning especially since they are starting i70 construction soon. It would take about an hour

Some students do it (most of those take the bus due to our "free" pass). So it is doable but definitely not the easiest. Lectures are at 8 am every day but obviously attendance for those aren't mandatory. But you should expect to have lots of long days when you have regular mandatory sessions.

I lived in BOulder and worked weekly at Anschutz...the drive sucks but there is an express bus that takes you right to Anschutz from the Downtown Boulder Transit center. That way you could sleep/do work on the bus. Look up the Flatiron Flyer route #5

I also interviewed in mid December and was just accepted today after waiting anxiously for 3 months! So excited to join the class of 2020! Don't give up hope!
Congratulations! Can I ask what day you interviewed?

It has officially been 6 months since I interviewed and still haven't heard a word...any hope of hearing back has long since transformed into frustration/bewilderment that CU waits so long to notify some applicants (those that aren't accepted) of post interview decisions

They should just switch to non-rolling admissions if they like to look at the whole pile of applicants so much

Highly specific question to current students--I noticed on the academic calendar for phase II that CU gives 4 weeks for Step 1 prep/test and vacation. That seems lower than average for other medical schools. Can anyone comment on whether that period of time is and would be sufficient?

Technically it is 5 weeks in total, 4 weeks if you want to take a week off for vacation. I am currently half way through dedicated, so it is hard to say just yet if it is "enough time" but I will say that pretty much everyone starts to study and review for step long before the end of phase 2. If you are well prepared going into dedicated, you probably don't have to pull 12 hour days for 4-5 weeks straight.

I'm also not sure that CU's dedicated period is really any shorter than other schools, I think the normal time frame is 5 -ish weeks. We just end up taking it a lot sooner than other places. Phase 2 is truncated by half a semester in order to extend our 3rd year clinical time.
