2015-2016 University of Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In a way, I regret applying to this school. Cute how UF decides to show interest in students with lower stats from out of state leaving highly qualified instaters hanging. Not to mention this load...enjoy!

http://www.gainesville.com/article/20080410/NEWS/804100319

I would try to relax. My student host was a 80+ Lizzy and was instate. But as the saying goes, stats aren't everything. And I would almost argue the converse, I think they show preference to high-stat out-of-staters and are more lenient for instate applicants. After all, they are a state institution. Either way, being bitter isn't improving your chances.

On a more serious note--UF sent me a note two weeks ago saying "they look forward to seeing me again." Is this them just being cute or am I maybe in (pls UF, pls...). Hahaha.

Anybody have any II updates? Pretty quiet thread here.

I hope so because I got the same thing. (but it's probably just them being the overly nice people they are)

Please keep in mind that many admissions offices, including UF's reads these threads. I understand applying to medical school can be stressful, but try to keep your commentary positive. I can definitely say UFCOM does not snub high stat IS students. I applied as IS with a LizzyM of 74... The great thing about UFCOM is that they read every single thing you send them and get a feel for the whole person, not just your MCAT and GPA.

Hi everyone! I'm a current first year at the UF College of Medicine. I just wanted to say good luck to everyone this cycle and that I'm looking forward to meeting some of you next year! This school is absolutely incredible

Anyway, just wanted to let you know I will be your 100% honest, reliable source for all things UFCOM. I can give you secondary, interview, and perhaps post-acceptance/decision-making advice throughout this cycle if you ever need it! I'll throw out one piece of advice right now: don't underestimate the secondary application! Dr. Lynch, our Dean of Admissions, is very serious about the responses you give in that portion of the application! If this is the school for you, put a lot of thought into your responses!

Best of luck to you all!

Anyone have the percentages of out of state or non-traditional students for previous years?

So I posted here earlier, haven't received an II yet though I submitted kind of later than most, with my app under review like mid September. So I'm staying patient. My girlfriend is interviewing today for dental school, she got her interview part out of the way and is now just touring the facilities. Went well, so fingers crossed for her!

The secondary says that if we have any updates, we're free to enter it and the admissions committee will see them. Is it worth it to add that UF is my top choice? I've been at UF for my whole undergrad, LizzyM 76 as a biochem major, and if I get in here I'm absolutely staying. Only way I can see myself going elsewhere is if I get some heavy financial aid (assuming I get into UF and somewhere else, that is). What I'm trying to say is, there'd be no conflict for me. If I'm admitted I'm definitely matriculating. I just don't know how much they care about that sentiment, and if it's worth updating them about it. Thanks for any advice!

Also, since I go here and am in the medical sciences area like 8 hours a day, is it ever advisable to pop in at the admissions office and express interest/ask about my application? It's like down the hall from my lab, haha. I'm going to hedge my bets on "no", but it can't hurt to ask. It's almost torturous, in a way, knowing they're in that office deliberating over my application while I'm anxiously checking my phone every time I hear the UFL email tone go off on my phone... Haha. Talk about being neurotic.

Also... I heard in the past that the II has 2 interviewers, from a friend that goes here. Is it still like that?

@BreakneckWalrus

In the same boat as you (no II yet/UF is one of my top choices) but I am OOS!

That doesn't sound like an update, but if you have anything new to add to your application there's probably no harm in including that sentiment somewhere in the letter.

I have no input regarding visiting the office besides that I would not do it, personally.

Yes, 2 separate interviews, each with 1 interviewer.

Cool! I don't often hear of OoS applicants whose top choice is my state college, haha. What makes you interested in UF in particular?

Yeah, it's not particularly an update. I did recently start volunteering at an organization that makes food for Gainesville's homeless residents on weekends, so I wasn't able to put it on my AMCAS. Not sure if it's worth telling them about though since it hasn't been too long since I started. On the one hand I don't want to sound like I'm desperate or anything, but on the other, I feel like if I were someone in admissions, I would like to know if my school were someone's top choice. Then again, I wonder how many people say that and then go elsewhere...

So 2 interviewers, huh. My girlfriend had 3 for the dental school interview, but they were all at once. So 3 people interviewing her at the same time for like an hour or so. For us, is it two separate 1 hour interviews? Or like 30 mins each?

They allot 50 min. One interviewer took the full time, another took about 30 min. They may be faculty or student interviewers. Open file, but they don't know your MCAT/GPA, unless it's in your rec letters, which they may have read. Interviews are after lunch.

Interview day was awesome here and very well thought out by UF! The new medical education building is a first class facility.

Also... I heard in the past that the II has 2 interviewers, from a friend that goes here. Is it still like that?

Yup! After lunch, I had 2 50 minute interviews, one by a professor at the school, and the other by one of the M4 students. Some were schedule back to back, bUt others are scheduled with a tour in-between.

The great thing about UFCOM is that they read every single thing you send them and get a feel for the whole person, not just your MCAT and GPA.

I really got that feeling during the interview day, they really wanted to know me as a person rather than as a set of numbers, it was a refreshing change! I absolutely loved how close knit and friendly everyone was!

Echoing this. Did not get many "traditional questions" and both of my interviews were very natural and conversational, where I felt I was able to present myself as a person and future doctor.

There are so many amazing things about this school and the current students were really friendly and helpful. UF definitely became one of my top choices after the interview.

Hi everyone!
New to SDN, joining this thread because I'm panicking over Thursday :nailbiting: I'm a current UF undergrad, 3.89GPA 30MCAT (instate). I didn't originally want to stay at UF, but I got an early interview in September and fell in love with the program. Now it's my top choice!! Seriously, the interview day is a blast. My interviewers were both really nice and had great advice to give (one MD and one MS4), I felt like a part of the family from the minute I showed up to the informal dinner thing the night before interview day. Plus, the students are absurdly happy. Never had much school spirit before, but I'm dreaming of orange and blue everyday now! :joyful:😎

Good luck to everyone!

PS- the admissions office definitely reads these forums!! They mentioned it during one of the presentations.

What time do we think the decisions will be mailed out...is it bad to wait by computer till 00:00:01 EST ...

Or will it be during regular hours?

Anyone know when they will be contacting accepted interviewees today? Historically it seems to have happened in the morning.

Wondering the same thing! I've been checking my portal every 5 min since 8..... Reminds me of waiting for mcat scores to come out :poke:

Do we think it'll come on the portal first? I thought they'd email first...

Where would it even be on the portal? There's no place for "Decision" so I'd assume we just get the email or a phone call.

Based on last year's thread, it looks like acceptances come out anywhere between 11 am- end of day. Some individuals got calls and email and others didn't specify whether they received a call but always got an email.

Current MS4 here- over the past few weeks I've been walking by the admissions' office's photo board with its big "Class of 2020- Coming Soon!" sign, and I'm so excited that today is finally here! *hug* I know how stressful it is waiting to hear back, and there's nothing I can really say to make things less stressful. I just wanted to let you know we're all really excited to start building our newest Gator chapter, and to remind you that even if you don't get the response you're hoping for today, it's still VERY early. At this point in the cycle, I was waitlisted from both schools I'd interviewed at, and was pretty down. However, I ended up at a school that I'm thrilled to be at with amazing faculty and peers. I ended up where I belonged and am ecstatic, and I truly believe you will too. Best of luck, and I'm cheering for you!

SO NERVOUS YALL
Same, they said they would let us know on the 15th and not any later because they don't want to make us wait... but I was hoping that would mean they would send an email as soon as the office opened today:inpain:

Thankfully I haven't gotten any emails at all today... which is odd... its like how the seas were perfectly calm before the Titanic sank...

hah. hopefully our titanic rises majestically from the sea.

Which date did you interview?

OMG ME TOO.

What school are you from? (PM me if you don't wanna make it public this is cray)

Do they send out a decisions no matter what today? Or can they defer you to a later date?

This is my #1 choice for sure and I would love the opportunity to be a Gator. Congrats to those accepted today! Would any of you that got accepted mind sharing stats (IS/OOS, MCAT, etc.)? Again, congrats to everyone! To those who haven't heard anything yet, have faith!

My stats:

GPA: 3.76
MCAT: 36
lots of good extra curriculars most involved with LGBT sexual health. I come from a biomedical engineering program, if that matters.

:soexcited:Going to be a Gator!!! Got a call and email
So thankful and blessed! Best of luck to everyone still in the running, we are going to be doctors!

Teach me your getting an interview ways! I also have exactly a 3.89 GPA from UF undergrad and a 30 MCAT score! Congrats on getting accepted! I do research in the building next to the medical school, so the wait is killing me!

Accepted on 10/15
OOS
4.0/37

Super frickin pumped! I was really impressed with UF (especially the BRAND new med school!). Plus, Gainesville is sick! Has anyone received the "follow up email?"

I had very similar stats & was UF undergrad too!! Good luck

Since it has been over a week since I got the acceptance email and never received the follow up email about how to secure my spot, I called them. The woman who answered said they haven't sent the email yet, but to secure a spot we go to the secondary portal and there is a tab at the top that reads "Admitted Applicant." You can accept it there and put down a $100 refundable deposit. It says you have two weeks to do this or your spot will be given up. Just thought you guys might like to know.
