reminder that i've got a place for anybody to stay at. queen bed, private bathroom, full kitchen access w/ mild breakfast options, free wifi, 7 minutes from campus, extremely safe neighborhood. we do have a medium-sized short-haired (read ~non-shedding) dog FWIW.

free for y'all, charge a very small amount for creighton applicants 😛

Haha I thought you were joking on the CU applicants until I saw your post on that thread! good one!

i gotta show a little bit of preference for my own school 🙂 plus $25 is even lower than most AirBnB places would be. it's definitely less than i charge for on there.

II today 🙂 reapplicant from last year (OOS) with a great app apparently, but I'm from CA so that was my only "problem." Excited for this year's cycle already! Earliest date offered to me was Oct 2

I only glanced at it (currently working), but I believe it was in early October?

Thanks! And congrats on the invite and good luck interviewing!

Congrats on the invite! Do you have any specific ties to Nebraska? Good luck with the cycle.

As it turns out, there was a typo on the interview invite regarding dates, so my interview will be on August 28th. Yay for one day earlier!

The only physicians in my family, though a bit distantly related, studied and worked at UNMC. That's my only tie to Nebraska! But my family there has been so supportive, would love to be near them.

Well best of luck to you!

Has anyone else received any invites? Any lurkers out there still waiting to submit their app?

I'm currently working on my 25th secondary app and UNebraska is on queue as 26 so I'll be submitting it hopefully in the next day or so. Is there only one essay question? (I can't tell since the app doesn't let you proceed without filling out that first essay)

Yep! Just the one.

Ahaha received a Georgetown II and a UNMC rejection minutes apart 😛
Oh well. Good luck with the interviews everyone! Guess going to school in Nebraska for four years wasn't enough!

Very surprised. I think they have an appeal system in place that you can use to express continued interest in UNMC, even post-rejection.

Feel free to appeal. Lots of people did last year and got interviews

Is there any way to check our app status? I remember getting an email that I had paid the fee but do we ever get notified if our app is complete and under review?

To check your status, you just log back in to the secondary portal.

Can you give a link to the portal? The only link I got in the email was for the secondary application but since I've already finished it, it just has a 'This page can no longer be viewed" when I try to log in.

Oh. Sorry. You can only view your application status after you've been invited to interview. If you get invited, you'll go to that same link you received, type in your preferred interview date, who your LOR are from, and then "sign" an attestation. Then they will send a confirmation e-mail regarding the interview, and you'll be able to check the status of your application.

Ooh okay, thanks for letting me know! Guess I'll just sit tight and wait.

I'm thinking about adding this school to my list. I lived in a small town in Nebraska for middle school and half of high school. I loved it in Nebraska and would not hesitate going back and staying. I still keep in contact with a lot of friends in Omaha and Lincoln. 33 MCAT, 3.4 gpa (one terrible freshmen semester, very solid ever since)
~70 shadowing
~100 clinical volunteering
~a ton of non clinical volunteering (including tutoring)
~currently working as a patient care tech in the ER full time
~worked about 25hrs/week throughout college

Is it worth applying in your minds? I'm not sure my ties (on paper) are strong enough to overcome the gpa issue, even though I feel like my MCAT should alleviate some of that concern.

I'll appreciate any input.

I would def apply if I were you -- good stats for the school and the tie to Nebraska is important! Your ECs and work show dedication, why not!

Beware the optimism... A 3.4 GPA is pretty low for UNMC while a 33 is only 2 points above average. The applicant will most likely be seen as an OOS with decent ties (nothing amazing).

If Buck has enough money to apply wherever, I'd say definitely apply here. If not, I would talk to Gigi first. She'll give you a straight answer.

I appreciate both the optimism and the realism. Despite my wife and I both working full-time, we are having a hard time keeping up with these application costs. Would my ties be considered stronger with a sibling that lives in Lincoln?

Gigi would be able to tell you, but I can't imagine it would help that much because I feel like they would be looking for personal ties meaning working, researching, volunteering, etc in NE. Or maybe parents here. Idk for sure, but def talk with Gigi.

Beware those that have no part of the admissions process giving you advice on whether you are qualified for UNMC or not. I know several students each year that are taken with GPAs far below a 3.0 and MCAT scores far below the median and average. Every applicant is different and nobody knows what goes on in that admissions room. MSAR numbers and stats only paint a broad stroke so don't let people tell you oh this is low, this is high, you won't be considered for this or that because truly NOBODY KNOWS and everyone is just guessing because they heard this or that. Have faith in what you bring to the table. Submit a secondary with confidence, secure an interview and show the school your dedication and passion for medicine. Good luck!

Buck ASKED for advice, which is why we are giving it.

I am not saying he has no chance at UNMC. But with a GPA below the median and a 33 MCAT, the chances are less than the average matriculant. I have no doubt he has a chance. The only problem is, those people with below 3.0 GPAs being accepted to UNMC are in-state and probably have compelling stories/EC's. Buck is OOS with relatively weak ties.

You say to not listen to people saying, "this is high, this is low." Well, the fact of the matter is that stats are really all we can judge by, so numbers are important. You're right, we don't have direct access to the adcom proceedings, so we rely on stats to help us know where to apply.

If you truly believe your "don't worry about stats" attitude, then by that thinking, we should completely disregard stats and apply to whichever schools we wish. Yet, I would be willing to bet you applied to schoose with similar GPA and MCAT scores as you've obtained.

It's fine to give a school a chance with slightly below average stats. But when the applicant is in a tight bind with money, such as Buck, it is best to optimize your school choices. I was providing him with an honest opinion on what I believe he should do and stick by it.

Buck, I'm not saying don't apply to UNMC. I'm simply saying give Gigi a call before deciding one way or the other.

Edit: I'm not trying to be rude. I really do understand what you're trying to say, and I relate well to it. Many people on SDN think that those with slightly below average stats have zero chance anywhere. I can assure you, I'm not one of those people. I simply am trying to give the best advice I can. Again, if the monetary situation was different, I'd be on your side. Alas, it isnt.

Best of luck to Buck, regardless of what he chooses.

I somewhat disagree with Baxt here. I think having family in Nebraska represents a stronger tie. Only one sibling isn't as good as having an entire family, but it's still something.

Truthfully, I think if you're able to strongly support your argument that you'd like to be in Nebraska, you have a shot. Talk to Gigi before applying though!

Got an email saying I was denied today. No II offer here. OOS with no ties whatsoever to the state (I'm guessing that this is what hurt me the most)

4.0 and 74% MCAT.
2000+ research hours
2000 hours working on a farm
350 hours shadowing/volunteering with rural medicine physician and PA
500 hours volunteering with American Cancer Society
200 hours volunteering thought other engagements

The main line that stuck out to me in the email "from non-residents than we could ever hope to accommodate in our interview and review process." I'm OOS with no ties and a luke-warm MCAT

Well if you really want to go to UNMC, I would express some interest in the rural primary care residency routes if you haven't already, microalgia. I think the OOS and no ties is obviously what hurt you the most. It doesn't hurt to appeal but if you are lukewarm about going here then its probably just not worth your time

Yeah Baxt I'll probably just focus my efforts elsewhere. Thanks for the advice though!

II today. OOS, but my wife and her family are from a very rural area in western Nebraska. We have plans to end up there and I am really excited about this school. 3.95 GPA, 28 MCAT, in my opinion good EC's. Hoping they go off of interviews instead of my MCAT to decide on admissions.
