Beware those that have no part of the admissions process giving you advice on whether you are qualified for UNMC or not. I know several students each year that are taken with GPAs far below a 3.0 and MCAT scores far below the median and average. Every applicant is different and nobody knows what goes on in that admissions room. MSAR numbers and stats only paint a broad stroke so don't let people tell you oh this is low, this is high, you won't be considered for this or that because truly NOBODY KNOWS and everyone is just guessing because they heard this or that. Have faith in what you bring to the table. Submit a secondary with confidence, secure an interview and show the school your dedication and passion for medicine. Good luck!
Buck ASKED for advice, which is why we are giving it.
I am not saying he has no chance at UNMC. But with a GPA below the median and a 33 MCAT, the chances are less than the average matriculant. I have no doubt he has a chance. The only problem is, those people with below 3.0 GPAs being accepted to UNMC are in-state and probably have compelling stories/EC's. Buck is OOS with relatively weak ties.
You say to not listen to people saying, "this is high, this is low." Well, the fact of the matter is that stats are really all we can judge by, so numbers are important. You're right, we don't have direct access to the adcom proceedings, so we rely on stats to help us know where to apply.
If you truly believe your "don't worry about stats" attitude, then by that thinking, we should completely disregard stats and apply to whichever schools we wish. Yet, I would be willing to bet you applied to schoose with similar GPA and MCAT scores as you've obtained.
It's fine to give a school a chance with slightly below average stats. But when the applicant is in a tight bind with money, such as Buck, it is best to optimize your school choices. I was providing him with an honest opinion on what I believe he should do and stick by it.
Buck, I'm not saying don't apply to UNMC. I'm simply saying give Gigi a call before deciding one way or the other.
Edit: I'm not trying to be rude. I really do understand what you're trying to say, and I relate well to it. Many people on SDN think that those with slightly below average stats have zero chance anywhere. I can assure you, I'm not one of those people. I simply am trying to give the best advice I can. Again, if the monetary situation was different, I'd be on your side. Alas, it isnt.
Best of luck to Buck, regardless of what he chooses.
