2015-2016 University of Nebraska Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've got a 12 hour shift that starts early tomorrow morning and here I am struggling to fall asleep because I'm hoping so hard to get some mail tomorrow.

Has anyone sent in a grade update? Do we need to send an official transcript to UNMC admissions?

I called and they said that it would be fine to email an unofficial transcript. They said that way it would be in your file sooner.

Yep! IS and interviewed on 10/30. They said something about meaning to send out my acceptance packet earlier, but forgot? So they called to let me know what was going.

Hey, did you ever end up calling?

I called like an hour ago and spoke to Kristina. I asked her if she could tell me if there was a decision made on my app but she said that my app has not been reviewed yet. 🙁

In addition, the ad com are on break and will meet once again the first week of Jan and then will be reviewing weekly.

darn, so much for my x-mas present! bleh

Edit: I interviewed back in Oct 30 so I don't know why they haven't reviewed it. I know that she said in the past about "random reviews" but why me! :/

On last year's thread there were people who interviewed in October and didn't hear back until March. It's OK that you haven't heard back... enjoy your break; you'll get some news soon enough.

So....starting this week there are weekly reviews of applications/decisions?

How's morale these days? You all hanging in there? I loved this school, so I'm hoping for some good news sooner than later!

Yeah, I think we should hear within the next few weeks or so. Good luck everyone, and keep hanging in there!

A little difficult when you can't make any future plans as your future is uncertain... Hopefully we hear something soon but yes, according to Kristina ad com should be meeting weekly starting this week. Cross your fingers?

is UNMC done with interviews? or are they still interviewing people?

Morale is still going, no notice is better than a rejection at this point. At least that is what I keep telling myself. I looked back two years and didn't see anyone posting about any interviews after December but I find it hard to believe that they are done with interviews already. This might be the last month for interviews?

Rejected today. Letter was postmarked on the 7th. I really didn't see this coming. Had an early interview and got a lot of positive feedback from my interviewer. Loved the school. I was hoping to be your classmate. Good luck you guys!

I'm sorry to hear that. It looks like you are going to be a medical student next year, but I know that Gigi is really great about taking the time to do exit interviews with anyone. Good luck with everything, and thank you for all of the support that you have provided to this thread.

I'm sorry to hear that, such a bummer. I didn't get anything today, this wait is killing me.

Are they doing the big envelope, small envelope for accepted and rejected letters, respectively?

That sucks Buck. At least you will still be starting come fall. Are you planning on doing an exit interview with Gigi or forgoing it since you already have an acceptance?

My acceptance is to an osteopathic school. I really like the school, but I'll be honest, I would prefer the resources and structure of an allopathic program, escpecially when considering third and fourth year. I've got an interview at OHSU in a month and I'm waiting to hear from Kentucky, so I'm still a bit on edge. I think I will do an exit interview so that I can prepare to defend myself better to OHSU if given the chance.

@Medschoolboy88 I think they are. My envelope was small, and others who were accepted said that their envelope was large.

That makes sense. There were a few people at my interview who were thinking of deferring their DO acceptance for a year to apply again for allopathic programs, specifically at UNMC, for those reasons. Either way, I hope it all works out for you!

Accepted!!! I got a small envelope in the mail ( 😱😱😱) and it ended up being a summer research offer for accepted medical students! So I called the next day and they confirmed that I got in and my packet was just delayed in the mail! So even if you see a small letter, keep your hopes up!:clap::clap:

Congrats!!! When was it postmarked??

Haha, I was accepted as well apparently! My interview was a bit awkward with regard to some of my clinical experiences (and certain polarized media events at the time) so I was sure that the small letter I received yesterday was a rejection.. but I too received the summer research opportunity for medical students! So crazy... was waitlisted here last year.

Congrats. This big envelope and small envelope thing is killing me. I keep getting different types of envelopes from UNMC all of which are related to my volunteer work there, the daily trips to the mailbox are becoming stressful.

Postmarked the 7th. I received my packet yesterday.

Congrats chachi! I was waitlisted last year as well...persistence pays off! They can't keep us out of UNMC forever! 😉

Thank you! It's funny though.. I have offers from other schools, and my experience at UNMC this year was totally different from last year. I would have picked this school last year. But this year? Probably not. I have family in Omaha though, so need to talk to them first ; )

Wow, what about your experience this year changed? I had 2 reapplicants in my interview group and they both said that their experience this year was significantly better. Just curious is all.

It sounds identical like your situation is identical to mine. lol

I added a lot more volunteering and focused on different areas of my experience(talked about it in a different manner). I have some other interviews lined up and I think UNMC is still my number one but I am not as sure as last year. I will have to see how things play out. 🙂

Most of them are peraonal impressions. Last year I was impressed by some of the tech advancements the school offered. This year, I went into the day knowing what they offered, and with more interviews beforehand, knew what other schools offered too. That may have tempered my opinion somewhat.

Most prominently however, in my interview this year, I connected more with my interviewer, but her gut response questioned what the admissions committee would think regarding the clinical work I've been doing since my application last year. It made me realize that there are certain areas of medicine that would not be taught at UNMC. (Not too hard to figure out which areas-- Nebraska is a very conservative state compared to my home in California)

Also this year, on my tour, students kept whispering "don't come here" as we passed them. It happened 4 times on a 30 minute tour and really started to be unsettling.. that may be a petty thing in retrospect (and I keep thinking that it was probably an exam week) but still was one of my biggest impressions from the day. Once might have been funny, four times was not.

Again, a very personal experience 🙂

Forgive me for snooping but I noticed u didn't get accepted the first time applying. What did u do different to make ur application look better? I'm preparing myself in case things don't work out this year on what moves to take. Thank ya kindly

Thanks for answering. That sounds awful, the do not come here whispering aspect. Multiple people whispering that in such a short timeframe would make me really reconsider attending there as well. Great personal reasons, and again thanks for answering.

I was interviewed and subsequently waitlisted at 4 schools, CA resident, and two of those were public, two private schools. The two private schools were heavy hitters in terms of name and reputation. Looking back at the schools, I'm not surprised I didn't get in last year, but I didn't necessarily do anything different this year. It's a great shame that people think you need to reinvent yourself if you don't get in the first time you applied-- I was ready then, but have been able to add significant clinical experience to my resume (and in fact started working before last year's cycle was over) because I wanted to. Personally, I think one of my biggest problems was that I applied too late last year, and left some secondaries waiting over two weeks. That being rectified this year, I have had the opportunity to go on 8 interviews, yet have turned down 3, accepted at 3, waitlisted at 1 (my top chocie!!), and have yet to hear back from the last.

To the reapps- we're a special bunch that shows persistence and determination; and honestly, I'm very glad to have been one.

Does anyone know if getting a masters in one of the one-year programs at UNMC significantly helps your chances at the med school for the following year? Or do they not really care?

Getting a masters degree is not necessary, but it can be a good way to differentiate yourself and improve your gpa if undergraduate was not the best. Doing the one year programs at UNMC specifically would definitely be a positive; just make sure that you do really well. I volunteered at UNMC and they liked that I knew more about the campus and hospital environment. I was also able to talk about how Neb Med physicians inspired me and welcomed me as a part of the team. If you are going to have a gap year and have a lower gpa, then a one year masters would be a solid choice. You could also consider a certificate in public health or other similar programs if those are of interest to you.
