2015-2016 University of Texas - Austin (Dell) Application Thread

IS, accepted on Monday, interviewed 9/3 (LizzyM ~ 75, if it matters).

The buzz out there is that the most competitive applicants will opt to go to a school like Baylor or UTSW, but I hope people are willing to take a chance on Dell; I was accepted to UTSW, but am more excited about Dell and what they're out to accomplish. I cannot wait.

I agree with you 100% that it is so worth taking the chance. Given that Dell has the backing of UT Austin and the entire UT system, I have faith that it's going to become a top tier medical school. But in addition to a world-class education, Dell is really giving us the opportunity to have an impact on the community and healthcare in general which has me so pumped! I can't wait to meet y'all! :soexcited:
 
I received an II last Friday the 20th. They told me they still have two interview dates left so don't give up hope!
 
Can anyone elaborate on the interview day at this school? Ecstatic to finally be able to visit Austin, TX!

The interview days are half days since there are no facilities to tour at this point. It starts with an intro to the school, curriculum, etc. You are put in a group with 4 other applicants and a staff member who you spend your day with. After the initial talk, the groups break out into their respective schedules which will consist of the following 3 things in any order: two 1-on-1 30 minute interviews, 5 MMI stations, and a 15-minute team exercise that you do with your group. After that, there's a brief closing session to answer any remaining questions and you're done! It seems like a lot, but it goes by quickly and is actually really enjoyable. My advice would be do some research specific to MMI style interviews if this is your first one.

I am truly hoping I am next in line for II - I received my secondary in mid-October and sent it a week later as well.

Do you mind sharing your GPA and MCAT pls?

My LizzyM is 73 with an upward trend. Honestly it seems like the Dell admissions process is holistic. I'm seeing no trend for particularly high MCAT +GPA based on this thread. They seem to be choosing interviews based on "fit" as they said they would. Don't count heavily on this one, there are plenty of other great medical schools in Texas.

I don't think they are sending out anymore secondaries. I think the deadline was sometime in October or early November. I could be wrong though.

I was accepted here (LizzyScore 76) and will be attending!
I hope other students are ready to catalyze change and jump on-board.

Dell is backed by UT System, has a stellar dean, and is in an awesome city for young people. Not to mention, it has thousands of amazing doctors to learn from in Austin. Even though this is a new medical school, the leadership staff is phenomenal. Austin may be smaller than Dallas or Houston, but scaled from 250 to 50 medical students, this place is enormous. Hope to meet some of you soon! If you're accepted and want to talk, DM me.
 
I know this school is very different, and I assume the interview questions will be different. Any tips from my fellow SDN members who interviewed here?

My faculty interview actually had pretty much the same questions I've had at other interviews. The only things that were very different from my other interview experiences were the MMI and the group exercise. For the MMI, definitely brush up on basic medical ethics so you feel comfortable taking a stand one way or the other on a given issue.

Question for those accepted, is your acceptance reflected on the portal or on the TMDSAS pre-match withdrawal section?

I'm asking because I received an e-mail congratulating me on my admission and that I received a scholarship a couple of days back, but I haven't received a phone call or letter of admission, and there's nothing reflected on the portal or on TMDSAS and I'm nervous that I'm missing something.

Yes, it shows up on my Pre-match withdrawal section. I would contact the school because there may be a glitch on their end.

Thanks so much for replying!!! I've tried calling and emailing but the thanksgiving break means I haven't heard back yet. This has been my top choice since interview day so I wanna make sure all my ducks are in a row.

II just now for me! They gave me the option of 12/3. I took it---I'm guessing that's one of the last spots given. Looks like I'll be driving to Austin tomorrow! LizzyM <70, non-trad as well. @swivelj which day are you going?

He didn't say it was the last date...but he made it seem like that was the only date I could choose from. I didn't ask for another date--I was too scared they'd change their minds and go with someone else lol! My guess is someone cancelled last minute and they were trying to fill that slot. I got an II today as well, but I missed the phone call. The voice mail said that they wanted to schedule me for 12/3, which is way too soon because I go to school OOS. I tried to call them to see if I could reschedule it but they aren't picking up. You must've taken my spot.

Just kidding. Hopefully they pick up later today or tomorrow.

Does anyone know if they offer any financial incentives or scholarships and when they would do so? I'm sitting on a UTSW pre-match offer and would likely choose that over Dell unless Dell was somehow able to offer me some money. But if they only give out scholarship offers after match (I'm assuming an interview in mid Dec. would be too late for a pre-match offer with a scholarship), I would have already ranked UTSW over Dell anyways. If anyone has any insight on this, it would be much appreciated!

Hahaha! You'll probably get the interview slot in January. I'm also wondering about the scholarships, too...

Their goal is to cover 30% tuition by scholarship. So far, I've received a merit scholarship that covers 25% of tuition and fees for all 4 years so I'm not sure if there will be something else to get up that 30% goal or not, but receiving official notice of 25% covered was pretty exciting. So based off my experience, I would imagine if you get a pre-match to Dell then they'll notify you of some sort of scholarship offer prior to the match. I'm unsure if others who've pre-matched have had similar experiences?

Yeah I got the same offer of 25% at pre match which is so, so exciting. I honestly couldn't believe it. I'm sure a lot more will be coming out as more pre matches go out.

Yes they offer scholarships, and pretty quickly. They already told me my offer.

I took the afternoon on the 12-16 date. That sucks we won't be there the same day, but I guess I will still get to meet you this Saturday!
