2016-2017 Mayo Medical School (MN) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi,
As a Cdn applicant I have a couple of questions. My application was processed on Sept. 14, and I received my LOR request from Mayo Sept. 23. I still have one LOR pending for submission (I am hoping my reference gets it in this weekend).

At this stage, with many interviews already completed at the school, what is the likelihood I would even receive an interview invite? And just to confirm for those that receive invites, what is the time window until your interview ? I have not started practicing at all, applying to US was a last minute decision, and I am in the middle of completing my Canadian applications. I just don't want to be unprepared in case I do get an II (fingers crossed! This is the only US school I'm interested in!)

Would also appreciate any other advice from seniors or other applicants!

Thanks you! 🙂

Hi! Really new on this thread. Congratz to all the people that already got LOR invited and II! I applied to Mayo MN really late, and just discovered the AZ option. Do you guys think it's worth it to apply to AZ this late?

I think since this is inaugural year, anything could happen if you're a strong applicant . Go for it !

I submitted my primary 4 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. Is this a bad sign?

What was your MCAT? thats the only screen for the fee request....

Several people already told @Prilozack a couple weeks ago that there was a screen. I believe he/she still wanted to try their luck because they didn't see the 508 thing on the website.

Exactly! I have under a 508 but not by much, and I wanted to see if I could pay the secondary fee given the fact that there was not a 508 explicitly stated on the website. Hopefully I can be in the running.

Ummmmm. It's a computerized screen. If you call, they'll tell you that a 508 is the absolute minimum requirement. Sorry, buddy.

Has anyone whose application was reopened at both campuses received an LOR request from MN yet?

Time to assemble a Mayo shrine composed of three foods (one for each shield) with mayo in them! I'm thinking BLAT, potato salad and costco chicken and aioli.
Too many other things. The perfect trifecta is pure mayo (white coat = patient care), chipotle mayo (creativity = research), and in-n-out spread (pass down that family recipe = education).

Do you think vegan mayo will be well-received by the Mayo gods? Recently started looking into vegan cooking, not for health or ethical reasons, but just out of genuine curiosity for how vegan alternatives taste/are made.

Play it safe and go full fat until you have your acceptance then pull the switch

+1. Now we just need to start a petition for them to open a In-N-Out in Rochester.

Of course. Mayo wants a well rounded class and seeks to accept mayo of all variation and flavors.

To be fair there's a bunch in Phoenix/Scottsdale!

I'll add that to my list of pros if I interview there 🤣
A-Mayo-men. Praying it up to Mayseus. In-N-Out is infallible and an undisputed superfood.

In-N-Out is one of the few relatively cheap foods which never disappoint me. Always tastes as good as I remember

I'm a reapplicant this year. Letters have been received by both MN and AZ but no II yet. I didn't even get a LOR request last year so I'm hopeful. I applied to a bunch of schools last year and didn't get a single interview. I studied engineering at a tough school so I have a 3.26 GPA which was honors at my school and a 32 MCAT 10PS, 11VR, 11BS. Also have significant research, shadow, volunteer, and work experience so I'm hopeful that Mayo will embrace my non-traditional background. Good luck to everyone else on here.

You really love the word hopefully huh ? Best of luck to you though I'm sure you'll kill it

I have confidence that I'd be successful in med school given my personal and professional background. What I love about medicine is that it mergers technology and humanism. As an engineer I've worked in many technical support roles and I would prefer to take my technical skills and apply them to be at the point of care for others. I think just getting an interview is the hardest part.

Also I chose hopefuldoc because it was the first thing I could think of and I didn't want to give away anything too identifying like a hobby or something but I guess I posted my stats and engineering background so it probably wouldn't be too hard to figure out who I am. Anyways, I've followed these threads for a while. I think the info has been helpful. I finally decided to join and start posting.

Yes I have a BS in mechanical engineering with a minor in biomedical engineering. Also took lots of high level math, computer science and bio/life sciences classes.

Hi everyone! I'm a long time lurker and I just made an account to post this question. I've been complete at mayo since July 5th and haven't heard anything since. Should I call and make sure that I didn't miss an email or something? By now, considering that mayo doesn't silent reject and they seem relatively quick with admission decisions, I would have expected either an II or a rejection by now. Is it possible that they are just still reviewing my application? I really do not want to come off as a neurotic premed to their adcom, but I'm a bit concerned.

Being almost 3 months with no correspondance, I would call to double check the file is complete and that no emails were missed.

Have you gotten a complete email? I'm at the same time frame basically: 7/14. I'm definitely fine thinking no news is good news at this point lol

I received:
"Your application has been selected for final committee review where it will be determined if you will be invited for an onsite interview. This review process will take several weeks, so we appreciate your continued patience.
Please do not call our office for status updates. You will be notified via email as soon as the review is completed and the status of your application has been updated. "

On July 5th, so I know I am complete. Is it okay to call even if they specifically told me not to, considering how long it has taken ?

That means you are being evaluated and they have everything they need. They are very good at reaching out to you via email if they need anything. It is hard, but I recommend waiting.

Okay, thank you ! I'll try to be patient 🙂

Miracles still happen. Was rejected in July, and thought it was over. Got an email this morning saying the rejection was reversed and I'm invited to interview!
How awesome!!!! Congratulations!!!

Can I ask if you were rejected post or pre LORr?
