2016-2017 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yep. IS, UC undergrad. Though my stats are on the low side for SD (high 60s LM)

Is it generally accepted that OOS applicants have to be higher on average than IS applicants? So wouldn't you be fine stat-wise for UCSD? Or is that NY the case for UCs?

California premeds are all highly qualified. Cali kids with 3.8+ and 35+ are not guaranteed at any UCs. Many go out of state with LizzyM >73

same situation + same lm range. hoping for good news for both us underdogs :' )
Neat. Best of luck to you too!

Not sure. I know certain UCs (at last UCSF, UCD, UCR) greatly prefer or save 50% of seats for California residents. Though aside from that, I'm not sure if they evaluate OOS and IS differently. However, California has a bunch of premeds with 3.7/30 so don't think they lower the bar that much if any.

lol not me T_T but yeah, the supply of premeds here greatly outweigh demand.

I heard one school (I think it was evms or another Virginia school) had 60-70% of their class come from California.

Anybody know if they are receptive to "in the area" emails? I'm from NY and will be interviewing at Keck in early December so if I were to get an interview here, having them in the same trip would be great.

Can anyone speak to how their interview experience went?

I received the secondary but have been unsuccessful in logging in for the single sign-on authentication process. Has anyone else had this issue?

Got my secondary on 7/8 and submitted on 7/10. Still waiting for an interview. the "8-10 weeks" wait time is slowly killing me. :bang:

For those who already interviewed, can you share how the process was like? I understand that you can't leak MMI scenarios, but how was the overall experience like? What's the interview day agenda like?

It was pretty cool! The first 30-40 mins were a q&a with the director of admissions. Then the first group went to go interview (32 people in total, two groups of 16). I was part of the group that interviewed later so I had 90 mins of nervous downtime lol. I got to sit in on a first year foundations of medical science class though! Then the second group interviews. Its MMI so that in itself is somewhat stressful but it goes by surprisingly fast and before you know it its over so I actually liked it. (8 stations in total). After that, there was a lunch with a couple MS2s. After that, is a tour with some other students and finally we regroup with the director of admissions for some last minute questions on the admissions process (when we can expect to hear back and the possible outcomes).

Wow thank you so much for sharing!

Did they serve any light breakfast? Thanks for sharing so far!

awesome, thanks so much, and I hope the interview went well/the rest of your cycle goes swimmingly:hardy:

has anyone heard back for an II after submitting in early september?

@crgirl Bombard the office with emails until they respond!

Or just chill for a bit. They're probably a little bit behind and will get back to you soon. I'd give it around 2 more weeks before I would send something to them.

@crgirl same here

So I called them today (Blocked my number so I didn't seem annoying) asking what to do if I'm at my 10 week mark. She asked for my AMCAS ID and I gave it to her and she said they decided not to interview me FOR NOW and I may hear in January or after. So I guess they do have your status if you call...

I'm truly sorry for your loss. Has anyone been straight up rejected via email/their website?

I'm taking the med school application process as proof that we all live in a computer simulation and that the A.I.'s who created it hate us.

anyone who's still waiting for that pre-secondary screening had trouble creating an account in the UCSD student portal?

Submitted 9/6. Secondary received 9/18. I was pretty surprised as my stats are on the lower side. I probably won't get to finish this secondary for about another week though :/

My ten weeks is coming up by the end of this week! Will be interesting to see what happens.
I think just nothing is going to happen.

It'll come and go. I don't think they guarantee anything. But, at least we shall have hope to hold on to.

Wow thanks! So it's about a little less than 50% chance at admission post interview. Pretty good!

Your signature says that you got an acceptance already. Just curious, how is this possible if med schools legally can't give out decisions until 10/15? EDP is also on 10/1. Can someone explain this to me? Are there special circumstances where you can get an acceptance early?

They could have been accepted to a DO program already.

Actually, there is no legal rule that binds schools to releasing the decision til after 10/15. Many schools just choose to do it this way.

I'm pretty sure that per AAMC rules they cannot release decisions until 10/15. That's why all MD schools do it this way unless you are ED and the date is 10/1.

The Dean at UCR has already dispelled this myth with our interview group. In fact, UCR has already sent out some acceptances.

I just check the AAMC traffic rules. It simply states that the AAMC recommends the rules. Not that it enforces them. So your comment makes sense.

Welp, ya learn something new every day! If only any of the schools I applied to would send out early acceptances...
