2016-2017 University of Michigan Application Thread

I am a little confused about something, and I am sorry if this has been addressed before. A couple weeks ago, Umich Med tweeted that there are about 3 more months of MichiganMondays. Does this mean there are 3 more months during which interview invites will be sent out each Monday? or does this mean that interview season will last a total of 3 more months? If it is the later then by when are the very last interview invites sent?! Thanks😀

They're referring to 3 more months of interview invites! Interviews are offered on Monday (UMichMondays) and interviews are held on Fridays. Hope this clears things up!

7 IIs for students from 4 undergrad institutions... another missed UMich Med Monday but I will not give up hope (even though time is running out....)

Also anyone interviewing next week (Dec 2nd)?

Does it seem like a letter of interest would help secure an II at this point? This is one of my top schools and I would love to interview.

I interviewed here last Friday (11/18/16), and this place is the real deal, folks. Absolutely amazing experience, went from being a school I was kind of interested, to one of my top choices, if not the #1.
So did I! Wonder if we interacted! 🙂

I loved the school as well. It was my first time in Ann Arbor, but I absolutely fell in love!

I was so nervous for my first interview of the day that I may have botched it, but I hope that my other interviews and the rest of my application makes up for it. Good luck to everyone.

So according to one of the admissions people when I went for a med school tour, nope but if it makes you feel better, go ahead. They also like update letters submitted through the portal

Okay thanks! I submitted an update in October so I'll just leave it at that and hope for the best.

If you submitted an update letter, it could be kinda weird to submit a letter of interest

anybody know if it's a disadvantage to be interviewing on the last interview date of the season?

You should consider yourself lucky for even getting an interview offer! But to answer your question, I met a lot of students who said they interviewed in late Jan/early Feb and still got an acceptance so don't worry! 🙂

According to their updated tracker 477 interviews are scheduled. Does anyone know how many total interviews they schedule every year ? trying to figure out how many II's are left.

I fell in love with this school during my interview day. I can't wait to hear back (I interviewed a little over a week ago, so I've got a wait). Not really sure why I'm posting this; it just feels like commenting here could generate good luck somehow lol.

OOS ! And this is such a reach for me, but I feel like everything went well during my interview day so hopefully I get some good news in the next couple of weeks

Good luck ! Everything was really straight forward and the students and staff were really friendly.

Hey everyone, I had a quick question as I am unsure what to do. I submitted my primary to Michigan but did not submit a secondary after realizing that I was not competitive enough for this school. I got an email from Carol regarding about my closed file, I will be reapplying to this school again next cycle, but should I email them and tell them what's up? This is my dream school, if I ever got accepted here it would be the happiest day of my life LOL so I don't want to give any impressions that I wasn't interested. What should I do?

Has anyone tried uploading any updates to their application through the portal? I believe I uploaded a document, but no file is showing up in the uploads section. Is anyone else seeing "no file chosen" throughout, or should a document be appearing if you upload something?

The file name should pop up (email_title of document). Then it should say "OK" in green.

Is getting a deferred decision basically a rejection? Don't know if I should keep my hopes up or just accept that I most likely will not get in.

I have heard that people have gotten in before from deferred decision. Waitlist on the other hand, is basically a rejection.

This is probably a very dumb question, but how are the MMI interviews weighted in comparison to the 1-on-1 interviews? How are the interviews weighted in comparison to the rest of my applications? I ask this because I started my interview day with my 1-on-1 interviews, and I was very nervous for my first 1-on-1 interview. I felt as if I bombed it. I did better on my 2nd 1-on-1 interview and my MMIs.

No one probably knows the answers to my questions. I guess all I need is reassurance and to wait.

I don't know about the "weight" of interviews, but I do remember on interview day Carol told us that if we feel like we didn't do well on one interview to shake it off and go into the next one fresh because one bad interview won't ruin your chances of getting in. I think they look at your interview performance overall as part of their decision. If it makes you feel any better I finished my first MMI 2 minutes early because I was so nervous and talked too fast. Then my mind went totally blank and couldn't think of anything else to say hahaha

Does anyone know when people who interviewed on the 18th will hear back ?

That is so funny because I think I did that for one of the MMIs too. My interviewer suddenly smiled and stared at me blankly after my last response. I didn't know what to do because there as no response to my last statement.

I think we will find out at the end of this month. I was there on the 18th too! 🙂

Anyone who has recieved interviews here, did you send an update letter prior to receiving the interview?

This kind of good fortune makes me happy to hear!

We are from similar cultures, so her first question was literally "___, tell me how many people told you not to be a doctor because you're a girl" and we literally just bonded over that, we talked about the struggles our Mothers went through, she called me a boss and told me continue being a boss to one day be the bossiest-bossiest-boss out there -- literally the best interview ever.

We both were kind of bummed that it was only 30 minutes long
This story sounds so dumb. So you bonded over race? Wow. I would hope that other med school faculty aren't this shallow. Definitely lowers my opinion of UMich.

I think that's a little harsh. What I got from this was that the interviewer had insight on the PP's cultural background so was able to put context in the first person on some of the struggles and limitations they face in their culture.

I am a non-white immigrant (SouthAmerican) and I had similar discourse with a white interviewer (at anther school) who had lived in Guam for 10 years and oddly enough a lot of the cultural perspectives were similar and we bonded over the cultural differences in those countries as compared to the West and the US, specifically. We bonded over the cultural barriers immigrants face, me here and him in Guam, and the norms and expectations that are placed on certain groups.

I think PP is describing something similar, only they are the same ethnicity, but no different and certainly not a negative.

Edit: to clarify at another school!

I'm saying bonding over race is shallow (and dangerous, in my opinion).

Imagine a white interview bonding with an interviewee over the fact that they're both white. Would you approve?

But it's like you stopped at they are of the same ethnicity/race and held on to that without seeing her point about the culture-specific barriers to women, which they both faced and mothers experienced.

Ex. If two whites in an interview bonded over growing up in a rural area that was not diverse with opportunities or cultures or whatever and how hard it was for them to seek those things out and grow as a person or understand others that would be totally understandable. Bonding over the fact that they are both white is silly, similarly if PP said we bonded over just the fact that they were both Indian and nothing further, that would be silly.

I'm sure it'll work out so you don't have to worry about the choice then.

I think it's very good story that two minority women could be proud of their achievements together. This raises my opinion of UMich, so I guess the karma works out to be a net positive. 🙂

In all likelihood, I won't be getting an interview invite from UMich. So yeah, you're probably right. I guess it makes you feel powerful to put others down?
