2016-2017 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think that's a little harsh. What I got from this was that the interviewer had insight on the PP's cultural background so was able to put context in the first person on some of the struggles and limitations they face in their culture.

I am a non-white immigrant (SouthAmerican) and I had similar discourse with a white interviewer (at anther school) who had lived in Guam for 10 years and oddly enough a lot of the cultural perspectives were similar and we bonded over the cultural differences in those countries as compared to the West and the US, specifically. We bonded over the cultural barriers immigrants face, me here and him in Guam, and the norms and expectations that are placed on certain groups.

I think PP is describing something similar, only they are the same ethnicity, but no different and certainly not a negative.

Edit: to clarify at another school!

lol at the fact that someone thinks culture and race are shallow concepts..

I'm sure it'll work out so you don't have to worry about the choice then.

I think it's very good story that two minority women could be proud of their achievements together. This raises my opinion of UMich, so I guess the karma works out to be a net positive. 🙂

Hey thank you all for being so respectful, I won't even bother trying to respond to a person so ignorant and so shallow. The only thing that kinds of bothers me is a person who isn't able to understand other cultures and barriers some individuals have to overcome is planning to become a physician. I'm really happy that UMich interviewers actually look into a candidate's application beyond just stats. I would rather talk about the obstacles I overcame personally rather than just my GPA and MCAT. Go blue everyone!

Any chance for us July people still? Also, does UMich care about letters of interest at all?

If you have good updates (like publications) it's worth a letter. If you have connections to UMich Med -- I can see the letter of interest being a good idea, but I'm not sure too much. But don't lose hope!!!

For those of who that submitted an update letter - did anything change on the checklist after you submitted? It looked like the document may have submitted successfully, but it didn't verify anywhere that a file was successfully uploaded.

Tbh, you kinda have a point in that an interview shouldn't be the place to just casually converse over stuff like that because it puts other applicants at a disadvantage. I had an interview where the interviewer and I were of the same ethnicity (I'm a first gen American and he was an immigrant from that country), and we spent the whole time talking about that country and what we like to do there and where our families were from. Felt like I was talking to an uncle. Great interview, but I felt like it was unfair. That being said, the stuff OP was talking about is stuff that is relevant to an interview.
I dont see why not. The point of an interview is for them to get to know you as a person. The notion that there has to be a specific set of topics you discuss is misguided. It seems to me if thats a big part of who you are, it absolutely should be discussed.

I don't think you realize that we weren't bonding over the specific country itself, it was the struggles that woman in our culture face -- which cause a lot of girls in our culture (despite being incredibly smart and qualified) to get pushed away from their professional dreams. One of my reasons to be a doctor is the heavy emphasis on mentoring younger girls of my culture and my interviewer asked about all questions pertaining to my experience as a South Asian American. It doesn't put others are a disadvantage because I am sharing my experience on why I want to be a doctor.

I know it won't happen, but im still hoping they review those of us from this past friday this month, being only 2 days past the monthly deadline. A December acceptance would probably be the best X-mas present ever lol.

Also, to anyone sending thank you letters to your interviewers, how are you sending them? I know they said send to the admissions office, but are you including them in the text of the email, or as attachments?

I normally attach them as a pdf to the email

do they not want physical thank you cards? I'd much rather write something than send an email

I sent physical thank you cards. Mail them to the admissions office, and put "ATTN: Interviewer name" and they'll make sure they get it!

I gave admissions a physical card and sent the interviewers emails.

Anyone know if they picked any # of lucky applicants from defer list like they did last year?

For the remainder of the Umich mondays, do they only select applicants from in-state or also out of state?

Do you know when decisions come out this month?

Are more acceptances coming out next Tuesday, December 20, 2016? Do they sometimes do them earlier?
