2016-2017 University of Texas at Austin (Dell) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II!!! They call you so answer your phone (lol I missed it and it took like 8 calls to get them back on the phone). I'm so excited :soexcited:
II as well! By phone!!!
I just got a call from an Austin area code. I was on the phone with a patient at my job, and the call had only just began when my personal phone rang. I torturedly and helplessly stared at my phone while I was talking to the patient fully realizing what it probably was. Called them back immediately after and had to leave a voicemail. Finally got another call and got the II! Holy crap this is amazing!

Just got interview 🙂 🙂 🙂
Got an invite! I'm so excited about this program!

CONGRATS guys!!! Would you mind sharing stats (including OOS and IS)??

For people waiting on secondaries, I received mine this morning! LizzyM-74.5 and completed primaries 6/10

I applied to Dell last year. TMDSAS Application submitted 6/13, transmitted to schools on 7/1, received Dell secondary invitation on 10/9. I was called up for an interview on their alternate day (1/9) right before Christmas, but declined because it conflicted with my UTSW interview. LizzyM ~ 71, IS.

TLDR; If you feel like Dell is passing you over, keep the faith!

I just joined SDN, but I interviewed the 18th as well. It was a lot for sure, the individual interviews were very comfortable for me and I honestly enjoyed them. The MMI questions were of course ethics based with no right or wrong answer which made them a challenge, but not brutal. They also have a group interview for 15 minutes where you have to come to a common solution to a question while you are video recorded. Since there is no school to see and no students to meet, it was basically an introduction followed by about 3 hours of interviews, but it isn't as brutal as it sounds.

Also I don't know if I have seen this elsewhere in the thread, but there are 6 days with two sessions each day and each session has 20 people. So they are only going to interview about 240 people which makes II a very selective process.

Edit: Oh and the admissions office said something about how they do read through everything when screening for the secondary which may be why it is taking some time for people.

The interview days are half days since there are no facilities to tour at this point. It starts with an intro to the school, curriculum, etc. You are put in a group with 4 other applicants and a staff member who you spend your day with. After the initial talk, the groups break out into their respective schedules which will consist of the following 3 things in any order: two 1-on-1 30 minute interviews, 5 MMI stations, and a 15-minute team exercise that you do with your group. After that, there's a brief closing session to answer any remaining questions and you're done! It seems like a lot, but it goes by quickly and is actually really enjoyable. My advice would be do some research specific to MMI style interviews if this is your first one.

Best of luck to you and enjoy Austin!!

My faculty interview actually had pretty much the same questions I've had at other interviews. The only things that were very different from my other interview experiences were the MMI and the group exercise. For the MMI, definitely brush up on basic medical ethics so you feel comfortable taking a stand one way or the other on a given issue.

Here's what people had to say about the interviews in last year's thread.

Apologies for the late replies! Dell is in full gear now and I think the inaugural class, as a whole, is adjusting to the new style of learning and getting in that "med school" mentality so we've been busy. That being said, if you're one of the few that have received interview invites for the first couple of interview dates, be ready but also have fun! I would say interviews are a HUGE aspect of what you'll be evaluated on because there are tons of metrics they look at, and there are three separate styles of questioning they have, as @w0rldw3y3d mentioned. They want you to do well, so don't think they're going to try to bring you down on your interviews.

I must say, I'm incredibly happy I decided to come here. Yes, there are kinks that need to be worked out with the curriculum and learning style, minor construction is still going on etc. but the beauty is that you guys won't have nearly as many issues (if any at all). Also, the faculty, staff, administrators are some of the kindest human beings and you can tell how much they value us. The "togetherness" and intimacy of the class cannot be overstated. It's truly awesome. Not something you can get at larger institutions, but if that's what you're looking for, go for it.

We also have the best medical school building in the state of Texas. No question. Get excited for interview day and best of luck! The hype is real at Dell. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to PM me.

I know people already got interviews here but I'm happy that I just received a secondary. It's the little things haha.
I thought they had already screened me out so that's a relief

I just got my MCAT score, 509 128/125/128/128. cGPA 3.63 with VERY strong upward trend, sGPA 3.75, Lizzy M 66.3, over 4000 hours of clinical with direct patient care, lots of volunteering, some research and medical trips to 3 countries and study abroad in 3 countries. In Austin going to consider me with my MCAT??? lol I know you never know but Dell is in my top 3!!!

From the Daily Texan

“We will be [emphasizing MCAT scores less],” Johnston said. “When you look at our average MCAT scores, they will probably be lower than some other institutions in Texas. That’s because we don’t think the MCAT’s that important. We’d rather get the people who are more well rounded and have proven themselves in other ways.”

- That said, your MCAT is higher than mine 😀

Oh wow! I know in their rejection letters last year they mentioned mostly taking 90th percentile. So there is hope! Lol

well i'm not 90th percentile... that sucks this school sounds awesome

Haha, if they consider 513 measly, then my application (with my 30 MCAT) was probably thrown away the moment I sent it. 😎

Don't worry, I know people with 30 and 31's on their mcat who got a secondary! You'll probably get one if the rest of your application is pretty decent.

So if one is say interested in academic medicine, judging by the schools mission, this would be the place to be right?

They enjoy all sorts of applicants. They want students who become leaders. Leaders in, yes, academic medicine. Leaders in rural medicine. Leaders in health systems. Leaders in hospital management.

I recommend you read this interview by the Dean from the Texas Monthly. Really great insight into his vision and mission for the school, really great to know for interview day 🙂

Wow great read. Raises a lot of questions for me... How will this curriculum translate into Step 1 scores? Are current students feeling like they are being trained adequately? I guess its too early to tell... I love that this school prepares their students for medicine in its current state but I guess if I get an II, I can ask these questions myself. Would also love to hear the opinion of current students if they are lurking these threads.

If any of you have questions that you want me to relay to admissions, they are downstairs. If you've submitted now, there are some that didn't get secondaries until September. Give it time, don't worry.

My app was transmitted 6/27 and i have not heard back. Could it still be coming?

When will they give out the next round if IIs?

We are learning a huge amount of material in a short amount of time, but I actually really enjoy the way the curriculum is set up. We have a lot of free time during the week to study and solidify concepts. We also have weekly exams from a step-1 company called Firecracker that are ungraded, but they are great for helping you see your retention from the reading and pinpoint weaknesses. I think a majority of the class has been using Firecracker daily alongside the curriculum as well, so essentially we are all prepping for step-1 simultaneously.

Ahh I've been thinking about Firecracker. I used this for MCAT and it helped for content review. Maybe this will be a key helper during the condensed year... Thanks for sharing.

Hey guys! Also a current MS-1 at Dell and so excited to meet some of you at your upcoming interviews! I see a lot of talk about mission/secondary/interview/MCAT ... so let me try to address as much of that as I can!

At our 'grand opening' in June, we had a press conference where the stats of the inaugural class were shared. Avg GPA: 3.8; Avg MCAT: 88th percentile. Personally, my GPA was a 3.75 and my MCAT was a 509 -- so if you're below the 'average,' there's still hope for you! I submitted my app in mid-august, received my secondary the day before the deadline (10/14) and received an interview invitation for the conflict date in January on Christmas Eve! Goes to show you that they actually do review files countless times -- they're making sure every application is fairly and holistically evaluated.

Interviews this year will be a little different than last year, if you've read that thread. Instead of being half-days, we've moved to whole days because now we have a building to show! There are 10-12 interview dates throughout the season, looking to interview ~360 applicants.

Mission is HUGE here. In your application, in your secondary, in your interview -- they're assessing your alignment with Dell's mission. And they're doing a great job -- I couldn't have asked for more incredible classmates. The perk of this school is class size and the constant team work. We have already gotten to know each other so well in just four weeks, and we're already like a little family both inside and outside of the HLB walls.

Good luck to everyone applying! When I applied, I never even imagined getting a secondary -- so to be here now is unbelievable. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about the school / class dynamic / etc ! Current students on SDN were a great resource to me during my application cycle, I'd be more than happy to give back. 🙂

Did anybody notice the change from last year on the website, where it used to be 3.2 gpa to get a secondary, but now its a "mission" fit based screen. So does that mean, that they are holistically looking at your application to see if you meet the mission and then theyll send you a secondary if they deem you a good fit for their mission despite gpa?

My understanding is this is a holistic screen, with a full application review, including GPA /MCAT as well as essay and extracurricular consideration.

I believe the first interviews happened a couple days ago. How were they y'all?

They were great! Dell truly is an amazing school. The students and faculty are very friendly and excited that you are there. It's not as scary as it seems, they are on your side. As long as you know your application well and know why you want to go to Dell specifically you should be fine! I wish you the best of luck.
