2016-2017 University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any current/former students or anybody else know when loans will be distributed? I'm trying to get everything I need (mainly a new laptop) ASAP.

You filled out FAFSA right? We'll get emailed when scholarship stuff is opening up

I die a little everyday that goes by from not having heard anything since match day. I wonder when they will notify about alternate list.

I don't think they normally send out anything about being on the alternate list. They said in interview day that everyone is put on the wait list.

Has this always been the case? On last year's thread there seemed to be a day people were notified about being on the waitlist.

Well for starters they got a new dean this year, so the whole waitlist thing may or may not be new with her coming in. Either way, I can confirm that they said absolutely everyone gets put on the WL, so regardless of whether you have been notified or not, that's where you are at this moment! Just gotta hold on tight and hope it works out for the best, good luck!!

Question about the immunization forms.. So we have to have Hep B vaccine series AND a Hep B antibody titer? Also if we do not have the titer, where would be get this done assuming we don't have a PCP? TY!

Yes, you will be asked to get a titer. Most of you had the Hep B series as an infant and we are finding that immunity titers have waned. If you are still in college, most University Health Centers will draw the titers for you. Be sure to follow up to get the results printout so you can send it to your medical school.

Anyway wait list movement expected here in the near future?

I called admissions a couple weeks ago (mid-March), just to get a sense if the OOS spots were at capacity or not, and they said they were holding off on sending any more letters at that point, and that they would be sending some more decisions out in April. Additionally, they said they were NOT at capacity for the OOS spots, so there's still some hope!

I was an OOS applicant who got in off the waitlist and I did not get my acceptance email until May. Granted, the timeline may have change since Dr. Jones stepped down, but my point is that there is still hope! Probably one of the best moments of my life was getting that email (when I least expected it too - on a Sunday afternoon).

Thanks for the sunny outlook, AJ8! I've done (I believe) everything within my power to get into UTHSCSA. Now, ball's in their court. I'm accepted for the fall somewhere, so not "worried," but damn, I really enjoyed your little slice of heaven down there.

In the exact same boat! Loved UTHSCSA but OOS and WL for MD and MD/PhD. Would love to go.. have you called back at all recently regarding capacity for OOS?

Can any current student of UTHSCSA comment on how they feel about the curriculum? Particularly in comparison to a block curriculum? Do you have multiple classes to juggle and how is that managed?
Also, I don't recall from interview day but is there any lounge for medical students, where do you guys hang out? Is there a gym or other recreational areas?

We are on a block schedule but there are a couple of classes that run over the top of normal block modules. As I've mentioned in prior posts, first semester here is incredibly busy because you have the main block modules and then anatomy and clinical skills as well. I would say there is quite a lot of juggling first semester but it slows down after that. For semesters 2-4 of preclinical, you'll have your main module and some random clinical skills stuff here and there.

We do have a student lounge that is very lightly used. It's really nice actually but it's tucked away in the basement of a building we don't spend a lot of time in. That said, I definitely know some people use it to play ping pong from time to time.

There is a Gold's Gym on campus. Membership to the gym is a mandatory fee as part of tuition.

I am about to graduate and was in the second class of the new curriculum. As mentioned before it is a block schedule and looking back on pre-clinical (and clinical) I am very satisfied with my education here. I felt that the courses prepared me very well for step 1 and 2 and that I did not need to use many outside resources to supplement my learning (just the typical Uworld, First Aid, Pathoma triad). If you go to class and put in the work you will do well. I loved the autonomy of the schedule as well.

Waiting to hear back from this school... they said they would have movement in April, most likely late April, and no word still. April is almost over, grr!

Didn't hear anything about waitlist but got an email that started off with "You are receiving this message because you may have an interest in speaking with our Associate Dean of Admissions, Dr. Kellaway, about your application to our medical school. In response to your request, we are offering 20 minute individualized appointment...." Does this mean its simply to discuss application in regards to reapplying or a way to feel me out when making waitlist decision?

You made a request to speak with the associate dean or how did that work out?

I also got this message yesterday and feel confused about its implication as well. I had not made a request to speak with the Associate Dean.

The way it's worded, I'm not sure whether it's positive that y'all received that email or not. I did not receive any email of any kind from them.

Yes I did not make a request but simply sent an update email!

I know I called last month to confirm my interest in school and to check if I was on waitlist. Here is more of the email...

"Appointments will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. If our time slots should fill, we will notify you and place you on a waiting list pending a future date selection. Please be aware that you will be asked to come prepared with your own thoughts, opinions, and ideas on how to improve on your application. Thank you for your patience and continued interest in the Long School of Medicine."

So it seems like a reapplication workshop... I'm not sure the implications because of the wording of the beginning of the email...

On another note, I haven't heard a lot of waitlist movement for this school. I'm literally counting down about 3-4 weeks till I can hear back.

I agree, it sounds much like a reapplication workshop.

My neurotic mind is making me think I am rejected if I am supposed to address how to improve my application during this meeting.
I don't want to fuel your neuroticism but the email seems like a soft-rejection to me. Who knows though, this is all speculation! I'm calling Monday to see what's going on!

Yea I hope not but I will call also to put my mind at ease some.

Call me crazy, but the bolded makes me think this is sort of a redo interview. The fact that they want you to talk about your own application is pretty weird if this was just an informational meeting. I've been to a reapplicant appointment at TAMHSC back when they still did them, and it was absolutely nothing like this. At TAMHSC they just told you what the weaknesses in your application were to better prepare you for next cycle. What makes this even more peculiar was that only a few students who interviewed and didn't match received this email.

I will look up last years thread to see if this came up. The wording is different than other schools' reapplicant workshop emails (especially considering I never reached out to them) but can mean either that I am not accepted but offered a chance to see how I can improve for next year or that its something else, like a second interview. I am hoping for the latter. I spent the first 20 min analyzing it lol!

To all of you who came to our welcome weekend these past 2 days, I'm super impressed by all my classmates and excited to see how the next four years with all of you go. I'm sure once the rest of the class comes in, it'll be even more impressive. I believe we had about 100 MS0's there this weekend. People are in the process of getting housing/immunization forms/financial aid things filled out right now.

And to all of you still waiting/getting emails from this workshop thing, I can honestly tell you that UTHSA really cares about each and every application. Dr. Kellaway told us they received over 8000 applications this year. My advice to you is to take advantage of every opportunity you can get here. You should try to connect with every person affiliated with UTHSA and be as respectful as you can. What sold me on UTHSA was that Dr. Kellaway mentioned my interview day that this place emphasizes respect over all else and you see that when you talk to students and faculty. Get the names/email addresses of everyone if you can and make a new folder in your iphone/contacts that has all the UTHSA faculty/students contact info in there for future reference if you need. And PM me if you have any questions!
