2018-2019 University of Hawaii Burns School of Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats that's good news!!! I would kill for a WL. Not confident in this school at all

Thanks! I know. At least it’s not over yet. I got rejected last time I applied 2 years ago so this is definitely a step up. This is a big test of patience for me, I guess haha.

Also, have faith! You will never know!

Also just got rejected, OOS. Good luck to everyone!!

Waitlisted, OOS! Does anyone know if they’re receptive to updates post waitlist?

Any IS apply to Imi Hoola this year? I think interview invites for that go out in April. Hopefully get in through Imi.

rejected too OOS, at this point my chance of having to reapply increased by a lot...does anyone know if the phone call consult they offered is useful?

rejected oos had an interview last year too and got rejected. did the phone consult last year but not sure if it is helpful considering im still getting rejected 🙁 they did give some good feedback

Sorry to hear that, hope that you have been accepted somewhere else/have more schools to hear back from. I think it would really help if they can give us some feedback on the interviews...which is what i am suspecting to be majorly wrong with my application.

Rejected, OOS. 2nd time applicant at JASBOM. JABSOM is a great school and I really love the program, but was very disappointed with my third interviewer. She was thirty minutes late, did not apologize, and made our interview feel like a chore, even though my interview with her is the most important in admissions process. Good luck to everyone applying, I thought the feedback I got last year was helpful, but the interview definitely plays a big role I am sure!

oh man! i had the same experience. She was one hour late, did not really apologize either. and my very first encounter with her made me feel i was crazy for being concerned and asking the security guard if i was indeed in the right room

Same!! Thought it was a test.

I'm sorry that happened to you too! Regardless if it was a test, I think we all deserved an apology. I'm an OOS applicant and had to fly out to Hawaii...I feel my first two interviews went perfectly until her.

Rejected IS yesterday around 3 pm, oh well that’s life! Did anyone even get accepted lmao

OMG. It looks like I am not the only one who had a terrible experience with an interviewer. My interviewer, a current MS4, was like 15 minutes late and I was a bit nervous. I ended up texting her, which was a poor decision. Right after we started our conversation, she told me texting interviewers is unprofessional although she gave me the number in the e-mail. WTF! I will go to Vanderbilt anyways. Good luck everyone!

my student interviewer was late by 15 min as well. Another thing I noticed was that their interviewers were also "under prepared", meaning that at multiple points of my interviews, they would look at the computer screen - say "now they want me to ask you this.." and proceed to read word by word off of what appears to be a list of questions. Anyways, i don't think i will apply here again if i end up needing to reapply.

While we’re griping here, one thing I noticed was the high post II rejections on MSAR. It’s almost like if you are a local or former local they give a II to anyone with a pulse then weed you out later. It kind of sucks for former locals to have that carrot dangled in front of us and waste money on the plane ticket.

Not sure if I’m reapplying here.

Has anyone not received an email yet? Maybe they haven’t sent out any acceptances yet...

IS, rejection and I know people who got accepted last month. Currently waiting to see if I get an invite for the Imi program

So according to this lady who has ties to jabsom it’s very hard (almost impossible especially your first time applying) to get accepted as IS if you don’t have an Asian last name or if you don’t know any prominent doctors on the island... apparently it’s all about who you know which makes sense since it’s hawaii and that’s just how our state works. So moral of the story is don’t feel too bad if you didn’t get accepted if you’re IS, it’s probably just because you just didn’t know the right people unfortunately

I second this. 98% of the people, including myself, I know at JABSOM were reapplicants.

Late post (just joined SDN and got approved) but received OOS acceptance around 2pm EST on 3/14! Shocked and excited! Interviewed early December.

I also had to wait for late interviewers - 30min for one and an hour for the other. Maybe it was a test.

Congratulations! Do you mind sharing you stats?

Non-traditional applicant (1 research gap year), east coast, female, 3.7 GPA from HYPS, 99% MCAT.

Literally no connections to Hawaii, so I'm baffled that they let me in.
You stats are impressive! Hawaii seems to like ivy grads with stellar numbers and you’re definitely one of them. Congrats again!

For those of you at applied to Imi. I heard back from them today and got rejected lol. But that’s okay. So check your emails!

Hey everyone! Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back. I haven't applied this cycle but I have some questions for you all if you wouldn't mind.

What is the latest MCAT you can take? I know that it's rolling admission to the MD program. I'm asking mainly because I am interested in the Imi Hoola Program and the application isn't due until November 1st. But I also know that you have to apply into JABSOM's MD program and complete the Imi supplement which is why I am confused. Is the Imi Hoola Program also based on rolling admission?

Hi! I think for this past cycle the latest MCAT was September 2019? Also, JABSOM is actually not rolling admissions as every applicant finds out mid-March what their status is (with the exception of those applicants that scored above an 8 on their composite admissions score. those people find out shortly after their interviews.)

As for Imi, they are not rolling. Basically if you are rejected from JABSOM, Imi will then contact those people who did not get in and interview them in April.

Hope this helps! Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

But of course! That's a well known fact in our medical community. They also like OOS applicants: for the tuition and stats.

It is what it is. This is after all Hawaii.
Keep your head up and keep trying. Best of luck to you!

Unfortunately you're right, that's how things work here. Thank you and best of luck to you as well!

I'm an OOS applicant currently on the waitlist. Does anyone know if JABSOM accepts Update/Continued Interest Letters or Letters of Intent? Are they looked upon favorably? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!
