Interview Feedback: University of Illinois College of Medicine

Just thought I would get this out of the way now since it will inevitably be asked by those applying this cycle:

Campus selection is a crapshoot and unlike in the distant past it does not primarily depend on when you interviewed and were accepted.

I (and several others that I know of) were accepted early in the cycle and not given Chicago. Personally, I was accepted with the first batch of students in October and received my 2nd preference. Also a former classmate of mine was actually accepted off the WL in May and placed in Chicago. They also do not reveal the specifics of how they choose who gets what. Finally, appeals are not considered until sometime in May although they sometimes may never even reach that stage since campuses might just be entirely full by that point.

Secondary received today.

Is anyone having trouble inputting their activities? Every time I try to add a new one it just copies the first. If I try to edit activities already inputted it glitches.

Yes I was also having this problem. I had to accept the changes and then cancel or something strange like that

In addition to training as a competent physician please select up to two additional areas of interest from the items below that you may want to pursue during your medical studies. Your responses will have no bearing on applications to joint degrees or special programs to which you might also apply.
  1. Simulation
  2. Research in healthcare delivery
  3. Basic science research
  4. Interdisciplinary collaboration
  5. Healthcare disparities
  6. Academic medicine
  7. Global Health
  8. Community Health (urban)
  9. Community Health (rural)
  10. Innovation Medicine

Provide a short, 300-500 words, statement on your interest and how you see it influencing your learning.

Please begin your statement with the letter(s) representing the area(s) of interest enclosed in parentheses as a programmatic queue. Separate multiple areas of interest with a comma. For example, your essay would begin as follows, if you chose Simulation and Research in healthcare delivery: (A,B) …

If you choose just one additional area of interest: (A) …

Describe any advantages and/or complications you encountered during your progression in education. Please include any noteworthy achievements and/or obstacles. (Examples: Acute or chronic illnesses, employment, financial difficulty, managerial role in household, etc.) (Don't exceed 150 words)

Did you guys get a complete email or any sort of email verification after submitting your apps here?

Hi everyone,

I was accepted here last cycle and is matriculating in the fall. Please dont hesitate to ask any questions as I will be checking up on the thread frequently.

How did you guys write 300-500 words for the essay? I feel like that's way too many words...

I wrote just under 400, if you pick two topics It's easier to meet it but I think around 350 is fine

Just to make sure I'm doing mine right - did you write 300-500 words (for you, just under 400) for all of the topics you choose? Or 300-500 for each topic individually? I assume it's the 1st option, but the the wording of the question is a bit confusing to me...

Oh yeah, I was very confused as well but ended up going with the former haha

I keep getting an error message when trying to change my password. Anyone else have this problem?

I did then I realized I was using a special character that it doesn’t approve of so check that

That wasn't it but I just typed in my previous password and it let me in. Weird. Before it kept giving me an error message. Thanks for your response!

Secondary was returned to me because they left out one of the required essays. Just when I started working on it, the new essay disappeared lol. Get it together UIC

Yeah, I just got an email saying that I had received an incomplete version of the secondary and that they had reopened the secondary for me to complete an additional question. I looked at the "new" secondary, but it looks like the same 1 additional essay is the only additional essay... I must have missed the brief time in which there was a new essay. Regardless, I'm having similar technical difficulties

What was the prompt for the additional essay that temporarily appeared?

something like: describe a stressful situation and how you responded to it. 250 word limit

It was the one from last year, the stressful situation prompt.

I only see a 4000 character limit. Does it still say 250 word limit for you or did they get rid of that limit when they re-uploaded the second essay question?

Dumb question but does "research in healthcare deilvery" mean clinical research?

I took it as looking into how healthcare is delivered from patient population to patient population geographically, ethnically, from private practice to hospitals ect in a clinical setting but tbh idk.

For the question: "Describe any advantages and/or complications you encountered during your progression in education. Please include any noteworthy achievements and/or obstacles."

Are you approaching it as a potential adversity essay? I know I am probably thinking too much into it, but the advantage portion is throwing me off.

Thank you!

It says 4000 characters on mine. I think they changed the word/character limit from last year's

I have a question about the activities. If we volunteered for two hours/week, but not every week in the semester, and we did this for multiple semesters, how do we input this? For example, if I spent 40 hours volunteering over two semesters, can I still say 2 hours/week from 08/17-05/18 or do I need to do the math and take an average? Or should I make multiple entries for the same activity?

do you know if they wait to review your app until they receive your casper results or until after you take it
Not sure, I took CASPer in May so it was not something that could hold up my app

Anyone know if we really need to enter our ACT/SAT scores? I don't even remember when I took it

I emailed admissions and this was the response:

"Can you provide the best estimate? Also the scores should be available on your undergraduate transcript. We do not use these in your evaluation for admission so please don’t worry."

My score wasn't on my transcript, but I knew what I scored. I just put in the score and estimated the date.
