Because @gyngyn said "We have been specifically told by the AAMC lawyers that they are only suggestions." I wondered if they had an opinion on what might happen if some schools interfered with other schools' implementation of the "suggestions." 🙂

The approach isn't that hands-off, insofar as they did put this system in place, as opposed to truly having nothing and having each school do whatever it wants!

An optional system as a courtesy. But yes, they still give the schools information so it isn't 100% hands off.

Regarding the bolded: I must, sadly, differ. It has no legal meaning.
There are no contracts between schools.

There once were rules of engagement that prohibited poaching students that had started school. Now we don't know where they are accepted so that can not be a prohibition.

Students used to be able to stay on a WL as long as they wanted, now they are being forced to abandon those hopes in order to keep a seat they may not prefer. The losers here are the students. The schools will always be able to figure out something, even in this "system." after all we have years to figure out an angle. With any luck, an applicant only has to do this once.
I foresee hefty deposit requirements, just as in the DO world. We've been working blind for years!

Not a big fan of using FB as a proxy for committed students, but let's leave that aside.

Of the 110-115 students that you cite, do know how many are PTE'd and how many are CTE'd? If, for example, 75 percent are PTE'd and half of those get off WLs and go elsewhere, then Mercer will have to take a significant number from their WL. And Mercer is likely not to know this for another month.

I only have talked to one person that I knew was holding out for other waitlists. When i say committed, I mean CTE and that they have accepted their seats. I’m sure there will be more spots to open up but i’m saying that it’s not going to be like previous years where almost half the class comes from waitlist. Just was passing that observation as it is different from previous years.

it's nice to know that others are going crazy too
Fam, we're all slightly crazy for wanting to take on something as crazy hard as med school 😉 😛

I am wondering if we should be as optimistic as gyngyn

My gut (could be wrong) says that there will be less WL movement this year than in years past because schools have largely been conservative with acceptances this year. Less acceptances likely means less WL movement, right? Since there is less opportunity for applicants to have multiple acceptances, amd then accept 1 acceptance over the other, and thereby cause someone else to be pulled from the WL.

But who knows.

TBH I feel like I keep seeing WL movement..I think there is more movement at this time than in years past. I think, as gyngyn expected, WL movement is slower but over a longer period of time (throughout June and July)

I can't believe it, we actually made it to 100 pages on this whirlwind of neuroticism.

In celebration, I quote Smash Mouth: "My world's on fire, how about yours?"
100 pages of fine whine?

So if I'm waitlisted at a not T20 schooll, is it more likely that they actually WILL pay attention to CTE? It looks like theirs is 6/24.

I personally think ALL schools will pay attention to CTE, unless and until @gyngyn corrects me with definitive information regarding what his school is doing. 🙂 This will benefit those on WLs with no acceptances, at the expense of those on WLs who have CTE'd elsewhere, who should either have to give up their guaranteed seat or their spots on the WLs.

As a courtesy, or as a tool to be used in the absence of the MAR? If schools are electing to require use of PTE and CTE, are they not opting into the optional tool, and are they not bound to respect and enforce it? If not, then it is not a tool at all!! In fact, it will turn out to be worse than nothing if it induces false confidence that people are going to enroll when that will only be true if they don't get a better offer!!! In fact, I'll go a step further and endorse what @Goro has been saying, namely, that if CTE is not enforced, the next step will be DO size deposits which should bring last minute WL movement under control for all but the most affluent among us. Middle and lower tier schools are not going to just sit by while the cream of their classes gets poached every year, after commitments have been made, by higher ranked schools filling out their classes.

What is the purpose behind all this confusion lol

As it is not required, it's a courtesy. It was simply a compromise when getting rid of the reports.
Requiring students us the tool does not mean schools are actually required to enforce unstated penalties. It's school dependent. But hey, everyone agrees with you that's chaos. Point made.

@gyngyn I asked this question on this thread before, but wanted to confirm by you as well. I sent in a LoI, which was mostly about my updates, in the beginning of May. Do you think it would help if I send in another LoI?

Are we thinking this is going to improve in future cycles or no?

I don’t think waitlist movement is that predictable year to year, but I would assume every party involved will have a better understanding of how the new suggestions and implemented rules at select schools will affect the process as a whole.

Too soon to tell since we don't yet know how this cycle is going to play out. If it's bedlam between CTE time and the start of classes, then it can only get better! 🙂 On the other hand, if this cycle just ends with a whimper, with limited WL movement after CTE deadlines pass, then this will end up being the new normal.

Every month is ok. Keep it short. Really short.
