2019-2020 Albert Einstein

During my interview, some med students were saying that Einstein offers a "free 5th year" if you need an additional year. I had never heard of that before and wasn't sure what they meant by that. Can any current students speak on this? I may have heard it completely wrong.

Also, I was looking at an article about the new Dean's goals for Einstein and saw that he wants to work toward debt-free education. Have any students heard about the timeline for this plan to become a reality? Here's the link for the article:

From what I understand, it's a just research year, so you get paid a stipend.

Don’t mean to be a bummer but I’m not sure there’s a concrete timetable for something like that. It’s something that every medical school dean wants. The only reason NYU, Columbia, and Cornell are tuition/debt free is because they got hundred million dollar donations from wealthy individuals. Not quite sure how feasible crowdfunding that kind of money from alum would be and not sure if einstein has enough clout to attract large donations from wealthy patrons

Yeah, that's a good point. Man, it sure would be nice if we could just snap our fingers and it could happen overnight lol

yes, the "free 5th year" is a tuition-free year that most people who take it use for research, but can also be used for personal reasons (i.e. have a baby, etc.), or if you need to decelerate your course schedule

Oh okay cool. Do you happen to know if getting an MPH could count as a "free 5th year" project too? I feel like it would cost since the MPH degree would be awarded through CUNY.

so the joint MD-MPH program is new and wasn't available for my class so unfortunately I don't know all the details. But from what I understood when it was announced, you would still pay tuition to CUNY for that year (don't know the exact cost) but not to Einstein

Folks who have interviewed: If you had an interview at the West Medical campus instead of admissions (i think), is it worth going to the admissions office first? Or should I just go directly to the medical campus? For reference, my interview is at 9am, but my check in time is 7:30

Is the west medical campus an on or off site?

What dates are available?
I tried to register on the interview portal but it says “You are not allowed to register yet.” Says to try again in 15 min, and it’s still not working hours later. Will try again tomorrow or contact them

Off. Seperate building.
If it’s within the vicinity (like blocks) away from the admissions office I would recommend checking in at admissions first. If it is completely off campus, then it is totally optional to check in first.

Well I’m not sure because the notes says email Mary pace your preference

My interview was also off campus and I went directly to my interview. It's your choice, but I feel like there's no point in going to the admissions office, taking a shuttle for 20 minutes to the interview location, then taking a shuttle 20 minutes back to the admissions office. The admissions office just asked that I call them when I finish my interview so that they know when I can get to the main campus for lunch+tour.

Thank you!

Interviewing here tomorrow! What time does the interview day end? My interview is scheduled for 9:45a off campus then I have to shuttle to main campus for lunch?

Good luck!! I interviewed on campus, but I believe you do come back to main for lunch. The interview day concludes after lunch. Honestly it was a really chill interview, and I heard the same from others in my interview group. I’m sure you’ll do great!

Any idea how long students wait to hear back after their interview?

At one of my other interviews, one of the interviewers told me “no news is no news”. It could be different school to school, but they mentioned that if someone you interviewed with gets a decision and you don’t hear back, most likely they just haven’t gotten to your application yet. Apparently they’re processed somewhat randomly, so they cautioned against reading into how long the decision takes. Hope this helps 🙂
I interviewed in late August and was told I'd hear back in February. I just called and they said that because they have rolling admission, they can't guarantee that a decision will be sent before April 31st and it is possible to hear back right before matriculation?!?!?!

Just got an II here today. After hearing nothing for so long I kind of stopped considering Einstein but it’s ranked a little higher than my other As. Does anyone know if I’m interviewing for a waitlist spot? I read the last few pages of this thread and it seems like I may not even hear back until after April 30 which seems bonkers. Just trying to figure out if it’s worth it to interview because I would love to go to school in NYC

They are wildly unorganized, I worked there for a year and a half. I don't think they've started sending out wait list spots and they seem to evaluate applications in a random order. It never really hurts to interview though.

I interviewed very late (mid April) and am now an MS2 here so if you're interested in the school I would say it's definitely worth it

Did you hold an acceptance at another school when you got the A for Einstein? I think the main problem is the PTE deadline is end of April so we would have to withdraw from other schools by then unless they put us on the waitlist

Yeah I'm super confused. Are they allowed to send results post 04/31 without placing on waitlists?

Ah sorry I am realizing my experience is probably no longer that useful because PTE/CTE was not a thing when I applied (and tbh I don't even understand it or how it affects things now)

I interviewed last week and was told that they aren't sending out full acceptances anymore at this point since they have already sent out many offers to fill the class. My interviewer said they have a priority ranking list type situation which from what I understand is basically like a waitlist but they don't call it that, lol. However I think a good amount of people are accepted off of the waitlist but since schools can't see who's accepted where this year I think in general they're more conservative with how many offers they send. Your call, but I'd say it doesn't hurt to interview because even though it's a "waitlist," you still have a shot!

In the past they could see which schools accepted you?

Weird, because when my friend called the admissions office they said they did not interview for waitlist.

Yeah I mean again they did say it's not technically a waitlist haha I think they were just trying to mediate my expectations since it's late in the cycle

Edit: also some of the students I talked to said they interviewed even later and they're obv currently enrolled, so I really think it's a pseudo-waitlist like they said

Can you explain this more? Did your interviewer tell you this, or was it someone from the admissions committee? When I interviewed they did not mention this at all so I'm curious/confused--thanks in advance.

Has anyone received merit aid here yet?
I haven't heard anything about aid yet - I filled out the financial aid questionnaire a few weeks ago. I think they send it in a package with all of the other financial aid in April? That's what I remember from checking some older threads a while ago, but I definitely could be wrong.
