I’m a current student at Davie if anyone has questions!
I heard that when NOVA had the previous curriculum, several students failed first year (this was second-hand information, so idk how accurate it is). How are students doing with the new curriculum? And how do you feel about it? Thank you 🙂

What are good neighborhoods around the school to look for housing? My boyfriend and I are trying to find an apartment near school, but I keep hearing how bad of a neighborhood Plantation is. Thanks!

Does NOVA have mandatory attendance for lectures? How many hours per day do you spend in class/labs?

we have mandatory attendance for Histology lab, anatomy lab, physical diagnosis lab, physical diagnosis lecture and opp lab. I would say on average mandatory classes are 2-3 times out of the week. We usually have 4 hours of classes everyday, sometimes we have 6. Labs are 2 hours each, 8 hours a week total. The rest of the courses are not mandatory but you’ll find some professors appreciate it when you go to class so it’s up to you whether you want to make the professor happy lol.

Unfortunately I don’t live in Davie so I don’t know anything about housing but I don’t mind finding out. So far most of my friends live in the area and they are pretty happy with the living situation. I will say that everything you need is by the school. There are tons of places to eat at, there’s a Costco, a Trader Joe’s, a Whole Foods, Publix, etc.

I don’t know about the curriculum last year but I do know our current curriculum is harder because we have integrated exams. Some of my classmates are doing well and others are not but that has to do more with the nature of our exams than it does with the information. Next semester our curriculum is much harder because we are starting systems already. I’m not gonna sugar coat it if you want A and Bs you’re gonna be studying like a mofo if you just want to pass you’ll still be studying like a mofo but not doing so hot. I personally like the curriculum because we see the information multiple times throughout the semester so it helps you in terms of retaining it. It’s not a perfect curriculum because we are the guinea pigs but they are doing their best. The good news about that is that the professors do everything they can to make the information understandable, some of them provide study guides to help you for the exams and there are tons of reviews offered every week that most students go to. So yes it’s very hard but if you’re motivated and use the resources given you should be fine. Ultimately your grade is up to you and your efforts.

could you elaborate on what you mean by integrated exams? do you guys have exams weekly?

how do you recommend studying for the course work? does everyone study differently? do people study in groups or more so by themselves?
That ultimately depends on you and whether you study better in groups or alone. I study better alone except for some courses like physio where I know studying in groups helps. If you don’t know your study methods yet you will, med school is a different world so whatever you did in undergrad may or may not work. Definitely use as many of the resources given as possible

integrated means you will get tested on all subjects at the same time. We get tested every 2 weeks in what we had those previous 2 two weeks and it’s one large exam with questions from all the different subjects you took. And since it’s multiple classes it’s also multiple grades

Just a word to the wise. Med School is going to be hard every where you go. You will be studying like a mofo anywhere you go. When curriculum's change (as has been happening at many many many schools as I am sure you are all aware of) the first year or two historically are more difficulut for those students. As the 3rd and 4th year of the curriculum come arround that is when students benefit. We have to remember why the curriculum is changing: it is has a lot to do with the fact that the school was not attaining the best board scores. People asked for better, more integrated exams that are more similar to step and comlex. This means the tests will be harder! That is the whole point. So I would not go and view this as a negative folks.

sorry i keep asking so many questions! last one (i think)! Im really interested in learning more about the possible fellowship in between 2nd and 3rd year. is this something youre interested in as well or pursuing? or if you arent, why not? I also hear it makes 3rd and 4th years free... i dont know the tuition breakdown, does this end up saving you a lot of money? thanks so much!!

I will say that these fellowships are super super super competitive. I remember them saying online like 2 or 3 people are selected for them.

i don’t know much about the fellowships because they don’t really tell you about them until later and your focus during first year is to do well in class. It is a super competitive program and I don’t know if the same amount get selected every year but we currently have 6 fellows teaching us 4 males and 2 females. From experience I can tellyou they work in the health clinic, they are trainers in our Opp lab they provide tutoring and they also grade you during practicals. They’re all awesome and will help you with anything you need. I don’t know if that’s something I want to do yet but we’ll see in the next year.

What are the main differences between the Davie and Clearwater campuses?
I honestly prefer the clearwater campus. most of the time the campus is just DO students and we are easily able to get study rooms. The facilities are amazing and the physicians lounge on the 3rd floor had floor to ceiling windows with nice views. There are a few down sides and that is we dont have a ton of clubs (10) to be exact. but we do have a smaller class and things feel pretty close knit.

I also really enjoy not paying through the nose for rent and everything I need is easily within 10 to 20 minutes.

If anyone is around Clearwater and accepted, please let me know if you want to tour the campus! Just message my inbox

So I am deciding between PCOM and NSU, what are pros and cons of each?

depends on how you felt at the interviews, tbh. Which one gave you better vibe? which one seemed more inclusive? do you care ab the location or the seasons? lots to consider... but id definitely make a list of what you value most from 1 to 5 and find out which school checks more off your list.

In my interview they stated that there are 9 spots. I believe they said 3 in Clearwater and 6 in Davie for the OPP fellowship.

Gotcha yeah same idea 6 from a class of 250 is pretty competitive. My point was just not to base your matriculation decision on something that may not even be an option

It will save you tons. It would be tuition and the money you'd save from interest. My guess is around 125-200k saved but don't quote me lol. I am looking at the same program but at COMP NW.
