2019-2020 University of Tennessee

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’ll post this here as an FYI because the thread for the UTHSC Master’s of Pharmacology is pretty dead. As of last week, 0 out of the 20 MD applicants in the UTHSC Master’s of Pharm program were accepted to UTHSC COM this cycle. Some people might get in off the waitlist but I would be extremely cautious of that master’s program going forward.
Do you know why nobody’s gotten in?

Every year the med school admissions seems to string them along, they never seem to get in right away, always hold then WL. Despite being arguably extra qualified to become doctors after that in-house program. Not a fast-track to an A in ANY way
This is quite scary.... 🙁

This is just the way it goes every year most people get put on the waitlist, but they are supposed to give you favorable placement. Most of us have not gotten a response back about where we are on the waitlist. I think when you’re in this program you are sort of put on the back burner, because they know you really wanna go to UTHSC. We’ve gotten very little communication about anything and the previous year didn’t get much either. It’s just the way it is with this program. We’re still hopeful that a large portion of us will get accepted though, because we were told we were one of the best groups they have had based on performance in the program itself. So we just have to wait and see...

Wow that’s rough. Wishing you guys the best of luck!

Did meddoc679 delete all of their posts or am I having a stroke?

This probably goes without saying...but whether or not a master’s program prepares you to do very well in medical school is a moot point if the program’s reputation and/or linkage is not strong enough to get you into medical school. I didn’t do the UTHSC pharm master’s program based on the issues discussed in this thread, and after a second year of its students being ignored, I’m glad I went to a true SMP with a national reputation.

I say all of that to remind everyone that UTHSC’s master is not the only path to UTHSC College of Medicine if you got waitlisted this year 🙂

Just withdrew my acceptance to UTHSC, I hope it goes out to one of y'all. Just as a little note of encouragement, I came out of "traffic day" with 0 acceptances and have gotten in off of 2 other waitlists in the past 2-3 weeks. Still lots of movement going on; good luck and hang in there!

were you placed on hold at UTHSC before getting in?

Has anyone who is on the alternate list emailed one of the admissions counselors to ask about what to improve if planning to apply again? If so would you share the email address!

I talked to Dean Strother last year when I was waitlisted. He tried to sell me on their Master’s of Pharmacology program or suggested I take graduate level Biology courses since I wasn’t a science major. I opted not to do the masters program (thank god) but did take graduate biology courses, improved my MCAT score, and did meaningful work but have ended up on the waitlist again... I took his advise to heart as honest, personalized feedback. Later learned he said the same thing to a lot of people. I again tried to get honest feedback this year but he just said the cycle isn’t over yet. Not to be discouraging but I would take his advise with a grain of salt.

can you send to me too plz!

In case I missed someone, it was one of the “big” (in terms of success/age/reputation) SMPs so think: Georgetown, University of Cincinnati, Boston University, Tufts.

The first two are the ones I would recommend because you take medical school classes with medical school students and take their same exams on the same day. Boston University, Tufts, and many of the other programs out there have you taking an old medical school curriculum, or similar classes as the med students but different tests or taught by different professors, etc. The benefit of a “true” Special Master’s Program like Georgetown or UC (I.e. you are taking more than half of your classes alongside medical students) is you get to talk in interviews about how you understand how difficult pre-clinical classes medical school are and that you can handle it (and that you beat the medical students hopefully).

Also, the biggest difference in my program between people who got MD acceptances during our SMP and those who didn’t was our MCAT scores. An SMP is really for GPA repair so you need to have an above median MCAT for your target schools before you do the SMP.

I can confirm this, based on who is in the FB and groupme. I have a friend in the program and I've been watching for certain names to join (none have)
Can confirm. Someone in the group chat did ask if anyone there was in the master’s program this year. No one replied lol.

I’d honestly go to another program if you asked me. Dr. Park is the head of the program and he only works with the Pharmacology department of UTHSC. Not tied to the MD program at all. It has cheaper tuition than some other SMP options but it won’t beat the linkage other programs provide

Everyone here is ruining my hopes and dreams lol

People in the pharm MS, is there a dress code for class? (Sorry random question)

Has anyone contacted Diane Harris or Nelson Strother to see if there has been any movement?

No I haven't personally. Honestly, with June already here, I doubt there will be any more movement. They said there would be the most movement in May with some in June according to the letter, though I hope this doesn't reflect how the pandemic pushed everything back.

I understand that SDN is not representative of the entire applicant pool, but I find it amazing that not one person on here has gotten off the alternate list yet.

ya agreed i find it very hard to believe no one would get off the waitlist but who knows?

Just FYI, I am in the pharm program and Dr. Park told me he believes that many of us will be accepted but that the Med admissions won't let us know until all of us have defended our theses. I think that everybody will be done defending by next week, so I would wait and see if there's any movement after that.

So the pharm students are in a seperate pool of applicants/spots are being held for them in the class?

I hope you all get good news soon.
