2020-2021 Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received this today:

"Thank you for your application to the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM). We have completed a full review of the documents you have provided. The Admissions Committee has not selected you for an interview at this time.

ACOM receives over 4,500 applications a year and there are a number of factors influencing admissions decisions. The admissions process is competitive, and a higher grade point average (above 3.40) results in improved chances for an interview. A competitive MCAT score usually begins at 501 (25 on old exam); however, the MCAT is weighed in connection with GPA and personal qualities.

Please continue to keep your AACOMAS application updated. We are automatically notified when you make changes to your application."

Sounds like a rejection, then they say to continue to keep my application updated?
I received an email like this too and I was ultimately selected for an interview about a month later and then accepted. Don't lose hope, you still might get an interview!

Oh okay thank you!!
I know some people have mentioned theirs says they will remain active and could be selected for one later in the cycle, but mine didn't say that so I wasn't sure!

Hey guys I got accepted and am wondering If i have to accept right away or how it works? I have until dec. 24 to pay my deposit

I haven't been accepted, but I believe you just have to pay that deposit before the deadline to hold onto your acceptance. I'd visit ACOM's website to be sure but I think it's as simple as that. Money talks. 😆

I was offered an interview on 17 Nov with a 20 Nov interview and was accepted on 24 Nov. Oddly enough I was told my application didn’t meet the requirements for an interview and out of the blue I got a phone call to set one up.
What part of your app do you think did not meet requirements?

I received the same email yesterday. Did you send in a letter of interest?

Mine has been complete since sept 24th. No interview hold, rejection, or anything. I’m assuming I’ll hear in the next week or two though.
I still haven't heard from them as of today (12/10) so I sent an email asking if everything was complete on my end. They responded that they hope to have more apps reviewed by winter break.

I think it it was my 2.79 GPA that probably did it. I was complete in September, and offered an interview on 17 Nov. I thought I was done because of the rejection email I had received shortly after my secondary.
Did you do a postbac or have a major upward trend?

I'm non-traditional and had to take about 20 credits of additional course work 6 years after my B.S.. Those grades were all a 4.0 so I did have a major upward trend and that was mentioned during my interview.

I just got my secondary because I applied late, Is it too late for an interview in this cycle?

For those who know, How does this school compare to vcom carolina?

I've been trying to find a comparison between the two too.

I chose VCOM because the tuition is ~$41,000 less over four years and the clinical sites are similar. I believe VCOM stopped requiring class attendance too. VCOM gives married students and students with children higher priority when picking rotation sites which is also important to me.

The school year also differs slightly between the two. ACOM has longer breaks at Christmas but VCOM has a week off after each block and a shorter Christmas break. I think I prefer more, shorter breaks.

The tuition is probably the main stickler there. ACOM's tuition is going up 5% per year every year.

ACOM also gives priority to families and married students for rotation sites. The shorter breaks sound nice, but I'd rather have a longer summer (for research programs) and an uninterrupted winter break 2nd year to do board prep.

I specifically asked my interviewers if anyone received priority when selecting rotations and she said only students in the combined DO / masters(in lab sciences or something) program do.

Fair points about the schedule. VCOMs summer break is pretty short.

Just withdrew my acceptance; I hope it goes to one of you before the holidays! I am excited to have you all as colleagues in the future.

Has anyone been able to reach out to Ms. Goodson? I asked her a question during the recent virtual Expo and she recommended to give her a call to discuss my application. I tried emailing a few times and calling and leaving a voicemail message but no luck... Currently on the waitlist hoping for an II but this isn't a very promising sign.

I've also tried reaching out and haven't heard back from her at all. I emailed once and called multiple times but no answer

I am on the II waitlist as well. However, I’ve spoken with Ms. Goodson back in October. She is very responsive and very nice, though there is no mincing words with her. She is direct and helpful.

But regarding not being able to teach her, think of what today is. Decision day. They’re going through their list and counting the folks who are staying, going, and how many seats they have left. Be patient, it will be worth it.

I’ll be one of those people freeing up a spot for y’all who are waitlisted as I am not forking over the 2k deposit. I was super excited for the program and even flew down to Dothan from the east coast to visit, but I ultimately decided that I would be much happier in the Midwest. Totally a personal preference and ACOM has so much going for it! Good luck everyone, y’all will be amazing physicians one day!

how long does it take for casper score to update? - I got my results back to day and it said it was sent to schools.

Does this mean I'm put on the interview waitlist?

If I pay the deposit, does that mean I’m committed to going here or does it just hold my seat? When and how do I accept a offer to say what school I will attend

Was randomly checking the microsite and saw II requested! Interestingly, I didn't get an email or anything until I confirmed my interview, so make sure to check your microsites. It's my first of the cycle and just wanted to say to keep your hopes up, everyone!

Complete 10/2
