2022-2023 Meharry

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
DO NOT WITHDRAW!!! In my student interview, The M1 who interviewed us was also MHS. She said they fill those seats LAST!! And Ms. Dixon confirmed!! She didn't get her acceptance until the day before orientation!! DO NOT give up hope!!
Thanks for the kind words! I'll hang in there. Hoping I hear something in enough time to act and attend.

I've just been so demoralized by this process but I know I'm not alone. I just wonder why Meharry does things this late? It makes it very hard to make sound plans.

Honestly I wish all schools had to abide by a timeline like we have to. This process is a lot mentally and physically.

The thing is, although the AMCAS website lists it as a "recommendation," they already do abide by the following guideline:
  1. By March 15 of the matriculation year, issue a number of acceptance offers at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and report those acceptance actions to AMCAS.
Since med schools usually accept double the amount of seats available (because of withdrawn A's) this "recommendation" doesn't help us very much because it allows them to slow down their process once they send out a certain number of acceptances. It's trash. I don't know how a strict deadline would benefit us either, though, because if they don't get to our application because of the 7000 or so applicants, we may never even get looked at. Pick your poison. :bang:

Acceptances until the day before orientation? These people think we can all just pack our lives up and be ready to go in a day?

Maybe I'm giving the school too much credit, but I'm sure they're not accepting people just before orientation to purposely inconvenience them. Usually its because someone drops out last minute, whether its a deferral for an unexpected life event or getting a waitlist acceptance to a top choice that starts later.

I've read stories of people abandoning a school in middle of orientation because they got off the waitlist last minute for a school they'd prefer

They have to fill the spot or it's a waste of both their resources and waste of a chance for someone who'd willingly take that last minute spot.

Yeah, that's a good point. Their fall semester starts earlier than most schools, so I can see people being accepted off the waitlist of a school they prefer and go there instead.

Does anyone know how often interviews are sent out? I can’t seem to find a pattern 🙁 Trying to figure out if I should start calling more often or hold off so I don’t get annoying

I was told this morning that the faculty are responsible for sending out the invites, Ms. Dixon only schedules the student interviews.

(I don’t have a II but no R either lol) but my 2 cents are to be patient. I’m trying to do the same. They have interviews until April-ish and they may give you the runaround if you call bc they’re ongoing. Not trying to discourage you from calling but that’s my opinion. Good luck<3

To hell with this process. I was complete in October, did MHS and I’ve heard nothing. I’m withdrawing my application. I’m not applying again and I’ve learned a lot about how hard work doesn’t always mean you’ll be satisfied.
ima hang in there but its february 7 and no secondary from them.. they at the bottom of my list.

Don’t give up so soon. This is my third time applying and I’ve finally gotten an interview after 2 failed cycles.
Some of the students at Meharry didn’t get accepted until the day before orientation. So you never how things can shift.
so even if at this point no secondary withdraw?

EDIT: I withdrew my application due to getting accepted to my top choice PhD program

I asked them about this (and the person speaking said, "How did you know we do this!? Haha... yes, there have been rare times this happens.") He said that if we are in that situation we need to call the school of medicine IMMEDIATELY and tell them we just got accepted and then work with them on a delayed timeline for us to put our affairs in order and set a timeline for when we are expected on campus so all of the days we miss from orientation onward are "excused".

Has anyone who completed their secondary in December gotten an interview?

Also, for those who have interviewed with students, were you all mainly asking the questions, or did the students lead the conversation?

I think I’m gonna follow your lead. I’m gonna just take my phd offer. This process is so absurd and unfair especially considering I’m an alumnus.
Withdrawing your application guarantees you don’t get a spot. You lose nothing from not withdrawing. Just a little perspective for those feeling hopeless. I know a Meharry alum that go accepted on the 2nd day of orientation. I applied ED in August and didn’t get accepted until April as a Meharry alum. Meharry’s cycle runs late and they don’t make their decisions based on when you submitted. If you haven’t received a rejection then you’re still in the running, even if you haven’t gotten a secondary. Literally.

I understand but Meharry’s deposit ($1500) would be due as soon as you’re accepted and take the seat? I just would like to have the ability to plan better. I also understand Meharry has a different process but it potentially makes an interested applicant rush or not be able to attend. I’m not trying to be a contrarian but rather I like to be able to plan. Obviously, I will attend if accepted but this whole delay makes me nervous.

I definitely understand that, but as things stand right now this is how their application cycle is. All you can do is position yourself to be ready when/if that time comes. When I was still waiting on a decision after interviewing in September I placed my name on the housing waitlist so that if I got accepted then I didn’t have to worry about housing when the time came. As far as the fee I do know that they have worked with students once they pay the $100 to secure their acceptance if they don’t have the $1500 immediately to secure their seat when the time came for that. Do what you can do and leave the rest up to God.

Thank you. I feel a little better with waiting. I understand there’s no rushing so I’ll do my best to focus on other things. I just hope Meharry sees something in me. I guess the uncertainty is just eating at me day by day.

Is movement at meharry regarding declining interview invites and acceptances heavy ?
I can’t speak to that. I just know they are continually evaluating the applicant pool which is why you shouldn’t count yourself out unless you get a rejection. Their admissions office is small and they holistically evaluate apps which affects how late their cycle is and why someone who didn’t initially get a secondary may get one much later in the cycle.

Hold on, you applied early decision and didn't get accepted until April??? From my understanding, when you apply ED to most schools, you can't apply to any other schools until you get a decision. Did that mean you couldn't apply to any other school that cycle and just had to wait until April to know where you were going?

ED applicants have to receive a decision by a certain deadline which is October 1st I believe. I was told I was getting put in the regular applicant pool, which was the “decision” I received. By that point I had already interviewed. So once I got that decision I was waiting on an acceptance or rejection and was free to apply to other schools. I only applied to Meharry though.
