2023-2024 Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (Kansas City) KCU-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can any current students speak to the difficulty of the preclinical curriculum at KCU. I keep seeing people say the curriculum is more difficult than other schools, but there are no specifics. Does anyone have an idea why the school has that reputation?
I've heard this also and I still don't know why people say this. Med school is hard no matter what and I think people just like to tell themselves this kind of thing so they feel better about struggling from time to time. Like DoctorSparkles said, one of the cons of the two-pass thing is that you might forget a lot of relevant anatomy and physiology by the time you get to second year, where you are expected to know it as they go back through all of the systems to teach pathology, pharmacology, and clinical management. I think I still prefer this way over having to be on the hook for knowing everything I just mentioned the first time around.

I think the way things are set up is actually very fair. There are occasional scheduling issues that come up, for example an OMM practical scheduled the same week as a systems course exam, but that's kinda rare.

I just got a letter in the mail saying I was accepted and it’s this cute white coat that you open and it says Future ____ with an arrow! Like to take pics with… but mine says Future Dentist! I’ve been accepted to the KCU-CDM CLASS OF 2028! I’m dieing 😭
Same here #accidentaldental class of 2028! 😂

For those who have been accepted, how long did it take for you guys to get your acceptance

Does anyone know if we are able to change location preference after the interview but before acceptance? I selected no preference on my primary app, but am leaning more toward one campus than the other after doing more extensive research. Do we just send the admissions office an email?

Do y'all think it would be fine to ask to switch from an in-person interview to online? The financial burden of traveling to campus is gonna be pretty hefty and some things came up that will make it very difficult to make the trek.

Yes you send an email to admissions and they will update your file.

Virtual. When possible I have opted for virtual to cut costs down. I was worried I would be considered less serious about the school by going virtual, but obviously not. And it worked out great!

That makes sense. I chose in person because I wanted to limit the possibility of having to pay for ACOM and KUCOM at the same time if I were accepted (ACOM interview is 12/8) and the KUCOM virtual interview was in January so

LOL SAMEEE !! my family was like wait have we been misinformed this whole time 🤣🤣

I think the two pass curriculum may be more challenging than other schools because you take each system block twice (physiology in first year and pathology in second year). However, I really appreciate that all the info is fresh for boards. We also have multiple exams per block and I've heard that some schools only do one exam per block so that may contribute. Med school is hard wherever you go and I don't think the curriculum is more difficult overall, it is designed to help you pass boards and be ready for clinical rotations. When I shadow physicians in KC, I have noticed a difference in the caliber of students from UMKC/KU compared to us and I think the curriculum really helps us be more prepared and stand out.
Do you guys get any breaks between blocks?

I applied to KCU-COM in July and never received a secondary. 510 mcat, 3.8 gpa. Is this normal? What should I do?

I just received an interview invite but the next available date is January 16th. Is this too late to interview in the cycle since so many acceptances will be given out already? Should I interview in person November 10th instead, I would have to travel from Florida for this.

I have an interview scheduled for December 5th, would it be looked at negatively to ask if they have earlier interview slots?

Congratulations on your A!!! Reading through previous comments on this thread, it seems like the timeline after interview is so random. I also interviewed 9/19 but haven't heard back yet. Gotta be patient I suppose hahah

Thank you! It seems extremely random. KCU has a pretty big class so I wouldn’t worry yet! I’m sure you killed your interview and hopefully you’ll get good news very soon!!

If it was too late they wouldn’t even have the date- That said, I’m person sooner may be better, but not necessary.

Does it seem like the trend so far is if you’re waiting more than two weeks post interview you’re probably waitlisted? People interviewing after me(9/5) are getting notified of their acceptances soon it seems.
I know they said we couldn’t reach out to them until the 6 week mark or something like that

I got my A two weeks and four days after my interview so I don't know if waiting more than two weeks holds up exactly. I would follow up after 6 weeks though if you haven't heard, as admissions said you could after 6 weeks.

Nah i dont think it works that way. They said during our interview day (i was 9/5 also) that its random and in no particular order of how good or poorly you did during your interview. I havent heard anything back yet either 🙂

Completely agree with this. I heard back incredibly quickly, and there’s no way I was even close to the most competitive applicant there with how outstanding some of the other candidates were both in academics and demeanor. Totally random, listen to their 6 week (I think that’s what they said?) rule.

Those of you who have interviewed already, do you mind sharing how your interview went? Was it relaxed? Is it MMI? I have mine virtually coming up and have just been preparing using SDN
