2023-2024 Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (Kansas City) KCU-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To everyone that got WLd, don't be discouraged. I was WLd last year, along with several of my friends that got off of it. It's still early in the cycle and a lot of people are/will hold multiple seats. Also there will be a number of individuals that will get into a different school( whether it be MD, instate, or just a different one) and will give their seat up at KCU. There is a lot of WL movement later in the cycle for KCU.

Also if you felt you did bad in an interview, it probably wasn't as bad as you think. The interview is over and you can reflect upon it and improve for the next ones! Don't knock yourselves down too much over it

When does the WL begin to move? I've heard they don't start until around May, is that true?

Maybe it used to be open file but now it’s closed? I’ve seen some schools where the SDN page makes it seem like that (the pie shows majority of one over the other instead of 100% either closed or open). Thanks for the info guys

For matriculation documents, I selected immunizations and did the precheck fee to get a sentryMD account. Do I need to do another precheck for the background check with a new fee? Could anyone who has matriculated or knows answer this? Thanks.

Do we have to do these immediately? I’m just trying to chill until I put my deposit down in December lol

We don’t have to do them immediately, but you definitely want to get all your vaccinations and titers lined up sooner than later. Some take 6 months or more to space out if you haven’t had them and you really need to get on it. In another tread I saw someone in a previous year lost their seat because they missed the immunization deadline.

If I want tot go to The Kansas campus do I need to interview there? Or can either campus work? Dates for Kansas are later than Joplin

anyone do an in-person interview and can give me some advice? This will be my first interview of the cycle and in-person so I'm super nervous!!

Do you still select campus preference on the secondary? If you indicated a preference for Kansas City, I don't think it should matter where you interview.

You can chill tbh. I got in around this time last year and I didn’t start getting things done until the winter. If you’re in the process of a multi series the school lets you do it while you’re in school.

Do any current students know when classes typically start for 1st years?

Does anyone suggest any hotels near the med school? I received an II recently and wanted to attend in person (11/30) but I don't know what's near to stay

I'm a second year and did virtual but I assume the format is still the same. Honestly the interview is pretty laid back, and this is coming from a very nervous interviewer. Be yourself and give answers that are well thought out even if you have to take a moment to think. Be respectful of others during the group thing. Have a few questions you might want to ask your interviewers if you finish answering their question(s) with time left over.

Any current med students that have interviewed in person to give advice ?
Second year here- just be yourself! The interview is pretty casual. KCU screens before interview invites so that means they already like you enough and the only thing left to do is show that you are a mission/culture fit. They hardly ever reject post-interview so the very worst case scenario is a waitlist decision and they have plenty of waitlist movement at the end of the cycle .

Can any current students speak to the difficulty of the preclinical curriculum at KCU. I keep seeing people say the curriculum is more difficult than other schools, but there are no specifics. Does anyone have an idea why the school has that reputation?

I think the two pass curriculum may be more challenging than other schools because you take each system block twice (physiology in first year and pathology in second year). However, I really appreciate that all the info is fresh for boards. We also have multiple exams per block and I've heard that some schools only do one exam per block so that may contribute. Med school is hard wherever you go and I don't think the curriculum is more difficult overall, it is designed to help you pass boards and be ready for clinical rotations. When I shadow physicians in KC, I have noticed a difference in the caliber of students from UMKC/KU compared to us and I think the curriculum really helps us be more prepared and stand out.

OOS II just now! the next available virtual date isn't until january 🙁 , but i'm gonna stay positive!

I just got a letter in the mail saying I was accepted and it’s this cute white coat that you open and it says Future ____ with an arrow! Like to take pics with… but mine says Future Dentist! I’ve been accepted to the KCU-CDM CLASS OF 2028! I’m dieing 😭
