2024-2025 Baylor

Have we seen many OOS acceptances yet? I was under the impression that very few OOS applicants had heard back yet
Baylors first offers went out in mid November and both IS and OOS may have to wait until February at this point

Hi All,
IS Texas resident here, who fell in love with BCM on interview date. I scrolled through the threads and didn't see any conclusive answer on sending letters of intent. My interview season has come to an end, so I would like to send an LOI now, but in the words of @wysdoc I'm not sure if ranking them as #1 is intent enough! Thank you all and goodluck!

OOS. I read on their FAQ page recently that post-I applicants shouldn’t send in updates but are welcome to submit LOI’s!

Went to an open house recently and they said that their rank list is basically finalized. I don't think it's gonna help at this point.

Thank you, I remember on interview day they mentioned that that once the interviewers submit their evaluations the rank is finalized, so I anticipated this was the case. Thank you!

hey everyone, I’m going back and forth trying to figure out how to rank my schools. I was wondering why does the Temple campus get such bad rep? Is it really just the city?

You also do not get to access the TMC as easily, which can be a big factor if you’re dead set on a competitive specialty where LORs from distinguished TMC faculty can be really helpful.

Other than that… nice city, cheap COL, small class size, close contact with the faculty, free parking… not a terrible deal by any means. The only issue is that it is new so we don’t know the true cost / benefit to students attending temple until we have match lists.

Anyone received/know anyone who has received any scholarship info as of yet?

That makes sense. I wonder if people will be more attracted to it if the match lists end up being identical/on par with Houston.

Was this declared for the 4 years? Or were they just like hey here's a couple extra grand on us lol
It's $25,000/year for four years. They said in the letter it'll cover tuition and some fees. Contingent on not failing and not being an a**hole

How is everyone planning on ranking Baylor with the Temple situation? I’m still on the fence

I am ranking BCM #1! However, I really like Temple – I love the small community/town feel but this might be because I grew up in a similar area. During both open houses, the deans emphasized various times that if we did not want to be placed at Temple, we shouldn't rank BCM first and should instead rank McGovern, TAMU EnMed, or UH higher.

I think i'm ranking it first because I have a OOS acceptance to one of my top schools that I can fall back on in case I get assigned to Temple. I live very close to Temple and I just kinda want to get out of this area for medical school - I need a change of pace!

got some stuff cleared up today during my interview.

1) no more prematches. yep. everyone gotta wait till the match now lol
2) more about campus selection. 'random' but not really. those who wanna go to temple (give their pref. in the campus match as Temple) will be placed in Temple. otherwise, those placed in Temple is random. they accept appeals pretty much always for the outlined reasons on their website. if not, there is an alternate list and they make offers based on how youre ranked.
3) more statistics from the class of 2028. 5576 applied. 1156 invited to interview. 342 offers made. 226 class size.

nice
at the campus tour, Dr. Vallejo said 85 prematch offers have been made this cycle.

assuming the numbers from last year are similar to this year, that literally a 24% (342-85 / 1156-85) post-II A rate after prematch offers end 🙁. Insane

This doesn't account for the match system though. There could be 100 people that don't rank Baylor #1 that are not accounted for in this number so you could be #400 on Baylor's list and still end up being admitted because they lose a lot of people to UTSW, McGovern, etc.

Not trying to be hopelessly optimistic or anything, but I believe that there is a good reason they have such a high number of interviews offered. We'll unfortunately never know the exact numbers because of the way the match system works but it certainly does work to our benefit. 🙂

From personal experience, many folks who receive prematches from Baylor will end up going OOS to T-5/10 schools. Don't factor that too much into calculations (and don't stress too much before match day) 🙂

I agree, and I would say Baylor maybe even dips close to 500 on their list when making those ~342 offers and that attrition would include ~150 students lost overall to UTSW, Dell, McGovern, etc. and OOS T20s, the latter of which will mainly be from the waitlist as it will happen after match day and the smallest subset will be the very, very few that pre-matched and will have already withdrawn before match day and decided to go OOS.

I’ll personally be ranking UTSW higher and I would assume that easily 100+ students with interviews at both schools will be doing the same as me.

Thank you guys for the solid reasoning to help those in the community crashing out. I’d like to bestow the Honorary Harvester Award 🌾🌾as a token of our appreciation 😌

Does anyone know if its more difficult to pursue a competitive specialty at the temple campus?

I know my specialty of choice is likely to change in medical school however, my big interests are all competitive. I'm torn between ranking baylor or utsw (prematch) #1 just based off of this. Otherwise, I would enjoy living in temple.

For those who went to Open House- what specialties besides PM&R were said to be unavailable at the Temple campus?

What specialty? There have been residencies and an established teaching hospital in Temple long before Baylor made it a second campus for med students.

Im interested in orthopedics, derm, anesthesiology, urology, etc.

I understand that its an established teaching hospital but I am just wondering since I saw on previous threads that students mentioned potential negatives being not getting LOR from esteemed faculty at TMC, not as much research compared to the TMC, etc.

Just got an email with details about the background check. Is there any harm in waiting until after match day to initiate the check? I think I'll be ranking Baylor 2nd and don't want to be in a situation where I wasted money if I get into my number 1.

My opinion is that you will have less competition getting more credentials at Temple than you would in Houston for specialized areas because more people will be pursuing them. @MCAThiccy at one time was planning to be neuroorthoderm something specialist because everyone in Temple was offering him research opportunities.

Assuming all interviewees just got that campus selection info email? Wishing it was an informal announcement of going to get A hahah

Out of curiosity, when did you interview (or were you accepted)? Haven't gotten a background check email so I'm just wondering if this is only sent to prematched interviewers!

can you elaborate more on what this means? i’d be interested in pursuing PMNR so this would affect my rankings
4th year students often do rotations for specialties they are interested in at other locations - perhaps you could do some at Baylor main campus in Houston?
