what does the student panel discussion entail? is it an interview?

if it’s anything like those at other schools it’s basically a Q&A session with current students

is it normal for med schools to ask for a CSS profile so early? i don't want to pay to do it knowing how low my chances are at hopkins LMAO

I agree. Here I was thinking that the deadline for this type of stuff was In March 2025, now I gotta scramble to get my 2023 documents. Do you guys know of any other top school that has this type of deadline? Or is Hopkins just being sneaky this year with it because of the free tuition stuff.

To the Johns Hopkins admissions folks who read this forum: someone senior on your team needs to step up and send an email apologizing to your applicants for tonight’s financial aid notice. It comes across so shady, essentially suggesting that your interview invitations and admissions decisions will be directly influenced by whether or not someone’s family has means. It’s also condescending to introduce this request “as a reminder,” when no other email correspondence nor the application portal have made it salient before. This is unbecoming of an institution that asks its applicants to read and respond to a Medicine Equity Statement. Do better.

go off lmao

you right but now I wonder and am a little worried - didn't undergrads get caught for not actually being need-blind (and the app process for that requires CSS submission with the application)?

i'm just worried that somehow this isn't going to be need-blind. if they gave me need based I'd get full COA lol
Could someone further explain how this may affect admissions? Does it mean they'll be more reluctant to accept poorer folks due to the expense of giving them full COA?

I would imagine (and hope lol) that Hopkins will not take into account the CSS profile in the admissions process. So I really don’t think we have that to worry about.

However, to your point, I actually think it would be the opposite. They would be more likely to give acceptance to someone who couldn’t afford it rather than someone who has rich parents. But that’s just my opinion. It’s not like it’s coming out of their pockets, it was a grant given to them for this reason. But I guess this can be an evil world we live in.

It's not normal for this application season, I can't name another school of their caliber doing this. Other schools ask you to complete the FAFSA by April of next year lol.

ya, my tolerance for medical school adcoms disrespecting applicants is basically zero.

I agree w/ you regarding undergraduate colleges not actually being need blind, and I find it very hard to believe Hopkins Med would be so different. From Freakonomics:

Earlier this year, eight colleges, including [Hopkins], agreed to pay more than $100 million to settle claims that they colluded to limit financial aid to admitted students. The settlements came after 17 schools were taken to court when former students filed a class-action lawsuit. Their lawyers estimated that roughly 200,000 students were harmed by what they called a “price-fixing cartel.” Headlines like these and research like Peter Blair’s and scandals like Operation Varsity Blues — all this makes it hard to believe we’re actually heading for a big change. It can also make it hard to even root for universities.

My take is that if they're asking applicants for CSS before they send out more interview invites or any decisions, it suggests that they might use that information to discriminate between applications. Perhaps they can't actually afford what they're offering and so they need to find a way to accept fewer people with need in lieu of applicants who can pay greater tuition. Regardless, I would hope someone in leadership for the Admissions department would be wise enough to come out and say "hey applicants, sorry if that Fin Aid email surprised you, our two teams are actually totally separate and we promise not to look at the finances you send us when determining whether to interview or admit you to the SOM." I don't think we'll ever know if that's true or not, though...

There is a reason Georgetown's rejection email says "The office of Admissions and Financial aid has completed a holistic review of your application." In my opinion, they definitely limit the number of poor students into these prestigious universities which are known to cover full cost of attendance.
this is the Johns Hopkins thread...

They said during interviews that the deadline was Nov 15. My understanding was that it was because they wanted people to people to know their financial aid offers (partial/full) when they sent out the first round of decisions in December since it’s a big factor in people’s choice in school. Maybe I’m naive though lol

To all of you complaining about the Johns Hopkins financial aid email:
Has it occurred to you they are trying to determine how much they can award you, under the terms of the recent donation to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine?

"Starting this fall, Johns Hopkins will offer medical school students free tuition — normally about $65,000 a year for four years — for those whose families earn less than $300,000 a year. Students from families earning up to $175,000 a year will have living expenses and fees covered as well."

Don't jump to conclusions, please.

You probably are able to fill out the CSS right now with the help of your parents.
The FAFSA for your cohort will probably not be open to fill out until December 2024

also totally irrelevant question out of curiosity (and with respect). how do you know the contents of the email if nobody posted it here?

If you feel like ranting @pink_panther who am I to stop you?

I didn’t see anyone’s email.
I quoted the announcement that was made earlier this year and that I posted at the top of this Johns Hopkins thread.
wysdoc, out

Yes, that of course occurred to me, but "sit tight and trust the process" is not a privilege that folks from disadvantaged backgrounds always have. Nor do they always have parents to sit down right now and help them sort finances. I'm sure others may disagree and that's fine, but personally, asking for my FinAid info 6 months before other institutions gives the perception of impropriety. If they want to make me feel confident that my prospective admission was need blind, they should request FinAid information after a decision has been rendered, not before, like all of their peer institutions are currently doing, and like they did last year.

how do people always manage to get mad over free tuition
It baffles me. It’s either one decides to fill out the CSS or you don’t. People are just making a mountain out of a mole hill.

These are lazy strawman arguments. Nobody is "mad about free tuition," and it's not conspiratorial thinking to be concerned that their presumably need blind admissions don't feel that way given their recent actions. Have some empathy, you're going to be doctors.

For the CSS Profile, do we need to add all the schools we’re waiting to hear from before turning it in by the Johns Hopkins deadline? It makes it seem like schools can’t be added after it’s submitted but it seems unnecessary to add any others at this point without knowing if I’m accepted or even gotten an interview unless I can’t add more later.

I only added Johns Hopkins being that they are the only school that asked for it.

For everyone speculating, the dean said in the information session that the only reason they ask you to fill this out is so that they can release your financial aid information at the same time as an acceptance instead of later. Also, having talked with current M4s, they say that the vast majority of their class was receiving substantial financial aid (like full tuition) before the Bloomberg donation so I don’t think they’re trying to discriminate against people who need aid. They just want to give you good news x2 on the day of acceptances if you qualify for aid.

Why don't they ask the candidates to whom they sent the II? Why everyone needs to spend time to enter this info without knowing whether they get II or not?

We already spend considerable time writing secondary essays. Now they ask us to fill CSS profile. After entering all this info, what happens if we get a pre-II rejection? Do they have respect for our time?

A number of schools ultimately require the CSS, not just Hopkins. Same gambit as with anything

Yes. But not from every candidate before Nov 15th. Why do I have to rush to fill CSS without even knowing whether I get II or not, leave alone acceptance?
For sure, I'm not arguing that the timing is great; not sure what the rationale is there on Hopkins part. But the CSS is more or less inevitable either way owing to its widespread use, and only takes about 15-20 minutes to fill out.

FAFSA typically opens in October (I think December this year) and all of this is more-or-less obligatory in the coming months either way. With the move to prior-prior year paperwork it's a negligible hurdle one way or the other. That being said, I'm as curious as anyone as to why they'd push an expectation for all applicants to fill it out in November; it does seem a little odd.

I would dispute that majority of the current classes receive aid already before this donation.

There are people each year who go elsewhere because they didnt receive a dime in aid or scholarship while other schools have awarded them scholarships or financial aid with the same css profile.

You would know better than me as you’ve been around longer. But the students on the panel said that Johns Hopkins used to just keep their aid very under wraps and that close to 70% of their class had full tuition scholarships pre Bloomberg

Possibly selection bias in the student panel. 🙂

Do you all think that Johns Hopkins interview season will run longer this cycle because they started almost 2 months later than they usually do?

For those who have received II, how long did it take for admissions to confirm your interview dates? TIA

for post interview updates, do we think it is worth adding a little letter of intent sentence and then just a brief update or should it just be strictly an update? i cant remember if during the interview they said to or not to send letters of intent but i know the phrase was mentioned lol. TIA!
