2024-2025 Stony Brook

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've tried my hardest to be optimistic for the past 2 weeks, but I am starting to lose hope. How is it possible that waitlist movement has not started yet?? I'm not sure if this is common knowledge, but I just found out that accepted students were required to make a deposit on May 6th. I imagine that maybe this would have caused a handful of accepted students to withdraw, but I guess that was not the case. At this point I've convinced myself that if there were spots people would be getting pulled from the waitlist, and the fact that there are not means that there are little to no spots. I really want to be at this school, but I am grateful to hold another acceptance and plans on attending that institution are becoming realer every day. Needed to vent. Any thoughts?
At the same time, some of the accepted students who left deposits are waiting for other waitlists to move, so don’t lose hope!

this is so fair. I think I’m just trying to stay positive and hope that they’re just taking some time and will fill a couple of spots with people from the hpwl! I was thinking about calling to inquire soon too

hey guys, for those who have been accepted, do yall know how full the class is approximately?

Anyone ask admissions if there's a specific timeline for when we should expect waitlist movement or if we should expect any at all?

I called today. They said they haven’t started working on waitlists for this year (normally, they would have begun this time around). Probably by the end of next week, they will start reviewing waitlists. hopefully

In the past, applicants waiting in the threads have used either the groupme or the class Facebook group (if one even exists this year) to get a better understanding of how large the class is at a given moment and how many spots are potentially open...

If anyone has access, it would be much appreciated so the rest of us can determine whether 1) Stony overaccepted and there is gonna be extremely minimal movement, or 2) they are just taking their sweet time reviewing and planning to pursue a wave of movements soon.

Thanks for the insight. Wow, we're in the second half of May and they haven't started? If anyone knows or has a guess, how many seats are usually up for grabs typically when they start?

They said in an email 30% of incoming class is from the waitlist. MSAR says ~35 applicants are pulled from the waitlist per year. Their incoming class size is usually ~130 so 30% of that is ~39, so expect around 40 students pulled off the waitlist. Not sure the proportion between HPWL and WL but I assume it’s closer than you would think.

About how big is the waitlist (both of them)?

I have a friend that got in back in October and he said there’s about 150 people in the GroupMe…trying not to lose hope but it’s looking not so good (unless there’s a good number of M2s and/or people that haven’t left the gc yet)

Hmm. If this group was newly made for the Class of 2029, then I fear we are cooked as RSOM clearly overaccepted. However, if it's the same 1st year groupme that just cycles through new people every year, then yes a good chunk are likely M2's or higher that just never left (cause lord knows I'm still in a lot of groupme chats from undergrad lol, I barely check the app anymore) or it functions as an info chat for different year med students in general. Hard to tell without going through the chat and looking into the people in it 😬

Okay, so I found the Facebook group for the 2025 entering class. The group was created about a week ago and currently has 161 members.

They say that accepted and current medical students can request to join the group (not sure how tightly they review requests to join the group, tho.) Nevertheless, considering the group is brand new and there are 161 members so far, I would assume that there aren't any applicants who were accepted a while ago and have since dropped out. So, unless there is an impetus for M2s and higher to join this group, or a lot of faculty/professors, I have a hard time seeing how there will be any significant movement.

It is worth noting that, according to the 2024 stats, RSOM offered 433 acceptances for a class size of 136 (which includes 10 direct BS/MD students), so about 60% withdraw their As. So it is still possible that some students are still uncommitted, and maybe there will be something in June. But honestly, at this point, I am not holding my breath anymore.

If the SOP for RSOM is now overaccepting, why even have such a large WL, let alone two groups? Seems unkind to hope-bait so many people.

withdrew my A awhile back but my friend called today and she (on HPWL) told me adcoms strongly implied the class of 2029 was full unfortunately

Although it seems like there's not a lot of waitlist movement this year like last year, I personally know 2 people that were pulled off the wait-list in mid-June from last year after the CTE deadline. Looking at previous threads it seems there was some HPWL around Wed-Friday this/next week, so if there is any movement, it'll probably be from the HPWL unfortunately for now, if there is any movement at all. The week after the CTE deadline of June 17th seems to be the last chance for any movement if anyone is still holding out hope. There is a chance, but I wouldn't bet on getting in

Just a data point—in 24 hours, 4/5 more people joined the Facebook group, and nothing has been reported here. Even if these were previously accepted students who joined the FB group later, I find it hard to believe that RSOM overaccepted by a margin of now more than 30 applicants (and counting). I also find it equally unlikely that there will be 0 waitlist movement, because even the most competitive schools have applicant attrition, and RSOM is no exception.

Yes, the class is probably "full" right now, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will remain so in the next few weeks (CTE). Had 135 applicants committed to RSOM by now, then there would be no need for the adcom to deal with the WL anymore, and we would be cut loose. While emotionally I have moved on, logically there is a non-zero chance of getting in. Slim? You bet. But you can't write it off as a done deal yet, objectively.

I like this.

Any waitlist movement this week? Im considering emailing and asking for an update

just called. person on the phone said waitlist movement hasn't happened yet. also said that they pull off the HPWL waitlist first and then the regular waitlist. i'm on the regular waitlist and assuming I won't get pulled, given that waitlist movement hasn't yet happened and they're going for HPWL first. i have 2 more WL at other schools that I'm counting on, but resubmitting my amcas today for next cycle 🙁

assuming they gave no indication of when that movement would occur ?

I have a feeling waitlist movement hasn’t happened yet because it most likely won’t happen/very little of it will happen after CTE dates next month and July.

I also emailed today -- they responded by saying that they can't predict what movement on their waitlist will look like for this year.

Yeah I mean...has it even started? Will it start? These are questions for the RSOM gods.
I emailed to ask since I had an upcoming deadline to commit to another school for a scholarship and they said that they hadn't started working on the waitlist yet and they have no information suggesting the extent of waitlist movement.
