2024-2025 SUNY Downstate (Brooklyn)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does anyone know if you haven't received a bridges program offer would that mean that you have a higher chance or lower chance of getting off the waitlist?

SUNY Downstate just received $1bn from a Hochul initiative (or something like that). Saw it on the news! That’s amazing! Congrats to all accepted! Perfect timing for all incoming students.

sorry not conditional, they just called me and asked me if I had chosen a school yet and if I was leaning towards somewhere else I shouldn't accept the initial offer.

They said you shouldn’t accept Downstates offer or the other schools offer?

No I did not. I had stopped completed their pre-matriculation things because I was doing the ones for the school I had been accepted to

I didn't want to believe it but it looks like they straight up lied about doing the pre-matric stuff to be seen in a better light? Someone posted that it was just to make admin life easier in the thread for a previous cycle, but I didn't know what to make of it.

Not holding out for anything from Downstate at this point then.

i was told by admissions that the waitlist is not ranked... i literally don't believe that cause then what dictates who gets an A? this school has honestly been so unprofessional with communication and empathy for those who genuinely are stressed out about their future career path. i waited for 7+ months in silence just to be waitlisted (which is fine if they don't want me, but really, 7 months of silence?), and even after being waitlisted there is no transparency or further communication. honestly, maybe it's a good thing that this is happening because at this point it seems like this school is not a good fit for me and does not seem like it would support me in my academic endeavors through such an intense period of schooling, learning, and personal growth. i have heard that the teaching and the support isn't great, but to feel like this without even having a spot is so eye-opening lol... not to mention they couldn't even bother updating the portal to reflect the correct year for this application cycle (initially it said something along the lines of thank you for your continued interest in joining downstate's class of 2022)... like what??? also, if my memory serves me correct, they have sent out erroneous emails that would indicate an acceptance thanking applicants for choosing downstate to pursue their higher education journey, but then they had to backtrack on what they sent out because i'm sure waitlisted applicants contacted them with confusion. what a mess...

sorry for the rant, but this whole process has just been so tiring, non-constructive, and outright concerning when you consider the fact that graduates are supposed to work in a profession centered around caring for others when the administration can't even bother showing care for prospective matriculants/applicants by doing the bare minimum.

not to mention they initially said all decisions would be out by early february on their website and in emails. then low and behold they drop the bomb in april....

Rant away! This process has been challenging for me too. I'm onboard with everything you just said. I've heard the issues with the school as well.
Also, the waitlist procedure is murky. You're given a score based on your interviews, etc. and I think it's out of 4 or 5. You're insta-rejected when you're below 3 (I think, it's been a while since I've taken a look), but what they do what that score when you're on the waitlist, is I think to match it to those that withdrew. This is all conjecture because again, NO ONE at Downstate or anywhere can be transparent for some reason. I forgot the phrase they used. There's a document about Downstate's waitlist procedure out there but it's to maintain something like class diversity (that might not be right word) where you swap one with another one that has a similar background/waitlist score.

It also seems like so many times these days, those in the admissions office feel like we are the ones bothering THEM and I get that tone in their voices. I had no idea that the admissions person, who works in the admissions office, doing admissions-related work, would be so bothered by questions about admissions or won't even answer questions about the admissions process...from someone who wants to be admitted.

It's really draining. I had a friend who applied and I think she just never heard back in general. Not even a rejection email. Just...silence. But again, it's a buyer's market and they hold the power. Except the buyers, like you said, don't even exemplify the empathy and characteristics they advertise...

Did anyone else hear back?

I called. They said someone was pulled off the waitlist "the other day" but they don't know what the movement will look like for the next month. The person said they "can't say, don't know" and it's just a waiting game at this point.
