2024-2025 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OOS A email received 3:24 EST!! I interviewed 10/5. They are offering me in-state tuition plus a scholarship which I will get exact info about in the next few days! I really love this school but the political situation in Texas makes me think that I won’t be able to get a complete medical education there in the next few years… does anyone have any advice or know anything encouraging that might help me make a decision?
Honestly I think it is something each applicant will have to consider. Not sure how other states compare, but UTSW has physicians that are currently on suspension from clinical duties and being investigated by the state for providing the standard of care, BCM has some physicians that might be next. Women are also dying and will continue to die across the state because they aren't able to receive the standard of care. Those are the facts on the ground.

UTSW as an institution, as far as I am aware, is not in favor of any of these things, and we really do have some of the best physicians and students in the US to learn from (who are also obviously, largely, not in favor of these things), but of course the situation is complex (i.e. how to avoid being targeted by the state/keep funding to keep the doors open while still providing the best care for pts, etc.) so they can't really publically oppose any of it (or, I guess, have chosen not to).

As far as education, I think a really quite small part of your education would be missing (most medical students across the US probably have no interaction with these subspecalties/procedures/etc. throughout their undergraduate medical education). But it's not impossible tbh. If you wanted to do advocacy/research in that area, yeah, you very well may not be able to, or at the very least feel some pressure not to.

Another thing to consider is that going to a school gives you home-field advantage when it comes to residency applications, so if your plans are to do residency outside of TX, choosing to go to a school in another state might give you an advantage in matching in that area (ofc UTSW will give you advantages as well, so the relative training/prestige may be something to weigh).

(Although I don't have a ton of experience with big cities), I can definitely confirm that Dallas is (in general) pretty dope!

If you (or anyone) has any more questions they want to ask here, or via DM, just hmu!

Sent you a dm - thank you for the thoughtful reply

Could anyone share any tips for/their experience with the interviews (MD and/or MSTP)? TIA

Quick ones:
1: Smile the whole time (while seeming normal)
2. Try to relax and treat it like a conversation (with a professor you respect or something)
3. Have your answers to common questions down, but make sure you don't sound canned/robotic when responding (this takes practice)
4. Expect tech issues (assuming it's still on zoom)
5. Don't try to tell them what you think they want to hear, just answer honestly (and well, but don't sound fake)

What is this political situation you speak of in Texas?

Texas state rules state that anyone with a $1000 scholarship can pay instate tuition. So that would be a minimum.

The harvester would like to meet other inductees into UTSW. Is this the right facebook group for UTSW Class of 2029?

The bots were wild last year, glad they're taking precautions!

How on earth would the political climate in Texas would preclude you from finishing your education? I grew up in dallas so I am genuinely curious about the logic here, just comes off as a weird/misinformed take. As for encouragement, you are being offered IS tuition + scholarship to a T25, good job! 👍

I know where the email password is, but what about the Facebook page password?
Once the administrator for the UTSW Class of 2029 private group page approves your request to join, you will be able to see the posts on that page and make posts.

If you didn't use Facebook(Meta) before this, you will need to set up a simple username & password.

I assumed they were referring to the restrictive rules in Texas on women's care or gender-affirming care. I (probably unhelpfully) asked the OP about such rules in the other states where they have offers, which are equally if not more restrictive compared to Texas.
Like many decisions a person makes in a career, time spent researching the information available to you is well spent.

I'm going to have to agree with @wysdoc here. If you don't know why applicants are thinking about things like this, you might want to do some more research online - and maybe take in some info from sources you don't normally read.

For what it's worth, I also grew up in TX, and in large part the sociopolitical landscape is unrecognizable from when I was a kid.

Yes wow thanks so much for your input. I don't think you could have phrased that any more condescendingly LMAO, well done.

"For what it's worth," you are misinterpreting his post. He is equally as confused as me regarding why the applicant feels this way about TX. The research he mentioned was for the applicant. I stand by what I said that the original post is a weird/misinformed take.

I know we are getting a little far off the topic of UTSW application thread here. If you guys want to continue a cordial discussion let’s move it over to this thread *~*~*~* Official TMDSAS Questions Thread 2024-2025 *~*~*~*~*

Would any current/former students be able to speak on MedPark housing? Looking at the website, it seems like a great deal/location and I wanted to hear from those who have actually lived in the apartments.

It is a great deal if you are settled on UTSW. There have been people who moved out and found the outside to be too be too expensive and moved back a year later.

Is the password the same as the password we received for our email credentials? I did not receive a password specifically for a facebook page.

So looks like the facebook page password is causing some problems and confusion for people. Heard. I'll be sure to let people in charge know during our next meeting this week, so we can be more clear! Unfortunately, I don't know exactly where you guys will find it, only that it would be given to you all through your acceptance. I do know this is a new thing this year, so it could be that the notification to add this new thing got lost somewhere along the way to you guys. But don't worry, there isn't anything posted on there yet and we have a way to cross check, so everyone accepted will be let into the group!

Sorry it's so confusing 🙁

What is the dress code for the admitted student day?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay? (I am traveling in from oos)

Has anyone admitted on 11/26 received an email regarding more info on cost and financial aid that they talked about in the offer letter. "You can expect to receive additional detailed information regarding cost and financial aid within a few days."

I haven't yet but could be because of Thanksgiving.
