2024-2025 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
CTE/PTE is an AMCAS School tool and not part of TMDSAS.
Keep any AMCAS school as PTE if you want to stay on WLs. You need to commit by that school's CTE deadline and drop your WLs.
So I am an OOS student with the UTSW acceptance and two TMDSAS waitlists and two AMCAS waitlists. I currently have UTSW PTE selected on AMCAS CYMS so I can stay on the waitlists. So does UTSW have a deadline in which I must change PTE to CTE thus dropping my WLs? What is that deadline? Thank you for your help!

No.
You have to make up your mind by the day UTSW orientation starts.
Choosing PTE is not required by UTSW but with respect to AMCAS allows you to stay on WLs

P.S. I see from your post history you were also accepted at Long. If you prefer UTSW be sure to withdraw from Long.

I just got off the waitlist (IS) as well. I have a lot of deep research to do and not much time to do it (they give 5 business days to make a decision) since I've done a lot of things, including signing a lease for my second-ranked school lol. This thread has been super helpful with getting insight on what UTSW is really like though!

@hopefulwishing222 @Flash_Oprah @sehafe - and anyone else -

Congrats on getting off the waitlist! 🥳 Please reach out to me (and the other students here) with any questions. I got off the waitlist so, I might know a bit how you're feeling, and some of the things you might be wondering
Do you happen to remember when you received your financial aid information?

It was mid may at earliest before I heard back ab confirmation for my FAFSA, and like mid July or later before confirmation ab my specific award.

Just as a fyi, our financial aid office is great, just have some patience. If you think it's time to reach out, don't hesitate to, but also keep in mind they have 4 classes of med students to help (incoming MS0s probably have the most questions though tbh), so be kind.

Does any current MSTP student know if the cohort is filled, or if they might still take a few people off the waitlist? TIA

Hello! A question for current students - do we need to purchase the welch allyn diagnostic set (otoscope/ophthalmoscope)? I've heard that it's never really used and I am finding it difficult to justify the $785 price tag for something that might be used once or twice even if it's "required." I am interested in ophthalmology as my specialty, but figure I can just buy a pan optic when the time comes since the set comes with a coaxial ophthalmoscope. Thank you!

Thank you for the clarification I really appreciate it. I've withdrawn from Long.

We are not supposed to tell you not to buy this. I will say that I personally made the choice not buy it and have not needed it. You will definitely need a stethoscope (and reflex hammer).

Yeah, it’s 'required,' but all that really means is checking a box online over the summer saying you have it. There is a risk of getting in trouble if you don’t, but honestly, if that ever happened, most of us would be vocal about how ridiculous it is.

The truth is, the requirement is outdated and unnecessary. It’s one of those things that made more sense back when most med students came from wealthier backgrounds. Unfortunately, a lot of stuff in med school is like that. Most rooms on the wards, in SIM, and even our college small group rooms already have otoscopes/ophthalmoscopes, sphygmomanometer, etc. mounted on the wall, so you don’t actually need your own most of the time. There is a chance you get a small group mentor who is weirdly focused on this (they all seem to have different things they obsess over lol), but if you were really worried you could wait, hit 'em with a "I forgot them at home" and then get the cheapest set off amazon - there's no chance they're checking the specs on what you have. But yeah, stethoscope and reflex hammer are what I'd actually recommend getting. And I'd go budget for sure - you will not be able to hear what you are supposed to for heart/lung sounds - no med student does, any decent stethoscope will work well for you at this level. Plus you could always lose it.

For OSCEs and standardized patient stuff, they tell us just to bring a stethoscope. I’ve only needed anything else during college sessions in the first semester and if you don’t have one, you’ll can probably just borrow from classmates. That happens all the time - people forget or don’t bring their stuff and we just share. Personally, I feel a bit bad 'mooching' but I doubt anyone thinks about it twice - I don't when I lend stuff. And you can always make up for by bringing food or something to colleges lol.

I’m totally happy to lend out my gear (minus my stethoscope), so feel free to DM me in August and I can pass it along to someone in the MS1 class. And if you have more questions, just shoot me a message.

Agreed. It's more of an "attestation" than a box check for us.

I hope they change that for ya'll though because it felt like a form of coercion if I'm being totally honest. I can understand this for the stethoscope/reflex hammer, but for the other expensive stuff it's unnecessary.
