2024-2024 UT Tyler Secondary Essay Prompts (notice they list WORD count not character count)

1. Our mission is to improve the quality of life and reduce health disparities in our rural East Texas region. Please indicate (select one) your connection to East Texas as outlined in our county map and explain below: (250 words)

I have direct ties to the East Texas region (born, graduated high school, community college, undergraduate, etc.)
I have indirect ties to the East Texas Region (family members, in-laws, visited East Texas frequently, attended summer camp in East Texas, etc.)
I have ties to a rural region with similar characteristics to the East Texas region (size, demographics, health disparities, etc.)
I do not have ties to the East Texas region; however, I’m interested in practicing in this area after graduation.
I do not have ties to the East Texas region but am still interested in attending the UT Tyler School of Medicine.

2. Are you a reapplicant? (Yes or No)

3. Are you a reapplicant to UT Tyler SOM? (Yes or No)

4. What have you done between the last application cycle to make your application stronger? (No Character Limit)

5. The mission of the UT Tyler SOM is fourfold:
Community Engagement: Embed the School of Medicine within East Texas, focusing on communication, responsiveness, inclusion, and community. The School of Medicine in East Texas, and everything we do will be in partnership with our communities.
Education: Recruit, support, and develop a diverse and representative healthcare and research
workforce from East Texas, focused on reducing health disparities in East Texas.
Research: Develop an array of biomedical, clinical, preventive, translational and population-based
research programs focused on understanding and eliminating health disparities in East Texas.
Clinical: Expand access to top-quality healthcare in the local communities of East Texas by developing and implementing innovative healthcare systems and leveraging existing infrastructure and programs.

Why are you interested in applying to UT Tyler’s SOM? (500 Words)

6. Please describe a significant personal challenge you have faced, one which you feel has helped to shape you as a person. Please include how you got through the experience and what you learned about yourself as a result. Examples may include: moral or ethical dilemma, a situation of personal adversity; or a hurdle in your life that you worked hard to overcome. (500 Words)

7. Optional question (highly recommend): Please use this space to share with the committee any additional information that may help us evaluate your candidacy that is not addressed elsewhere in the application. (500 Words)

Good luck to all applying!

If the county that we are from is outlined in gray, would that be considered direct ties to east Texas?

I actually emailed their admissions office about this. yes, it does count as direct ties!

Remember to schedule your Casper exam. Duet is required.

Hey y'all! I'm working on Tyler's secondaries, and I had a quick question; I'm a suburb/city girl, but I've spent significant portions of my life (i.e. several months a year for many years) in my grandma's rural village in India. It opened my eyes quite a bit to care issues, especially with cancer, in rural areas.

It's not a big deal either way, but would it be appropriate to then check off the "I have ties to a rural region with similar characteristics to the East Texas region (size, demographics, health disparities, etc.)" box? I'm leaning to not doing it, but a friend who goes there said it should be ok, so I figured I'd ask you smart people.

Also, a follow-up: are they not screening anymore? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I could've sworn they only sent secondaries them to those with ties or something similar to it?

They’ll send secondaries to most, but look at their essay questions and decide whether they really apply to you and your experiences. They mostly admit people with direct ties.

Are my chances close to nothing if I'm from Houston? I spent a lotttt of time on the secondary and now I regret it because it seems my chances are low due to no direct ties :(

Anyone have stats on this?

This thread is like watching paint dry. Anybody confirm when II invites begin? I think I saw last year late July?

Give it time. We just had a hurricane that impacted a lot of the southeastern parts of the state and a lot of people don't even have power right now. It's early July and last year most TX schools only started sending II's in late July/early August.

Yeah, not currently in the area but should know since my mother in law’s farm is out there. She is staying with us to get quick doctor appointments. My students are in shopping parks trying to finish summer semester yet no news on if I extend exams assignments with school closures of online classes or give them all I’s to finish at later date. Kinda sounds like a casper question I bombed on but the simple answer is wait for chain of command to circle back with instructions. Tough time!

Texas tech Foster already sent out a set of invites early July for early August. Lubbock just sent invites to out of staters. And I thought last year UTT started early July hence the query.

Are the interviews from texas so far just UT Tyler, TTHSC, and PFLSOM?

I’m not holding out much hope for this school since I don’t have direct ties, but I was skimming all the TMDSAS school stats and was kinda of shocked.

They interviewed around 270 people last cycle and there are ONLY 40 people in the class???? That’s like a 14% chance of acceptance post II….

I thought getting an II was a big deal for this school but it ain’t any easier even after the II

It is good experience to interview whether you get in or not, hopefully it helps in your future interviews :)

At this point though I don’t even think I’d go to an interview even if I get one, I just realized they’re in person interviews too and I don’t want to spend money on a school I have no shot at even getting into post II lol…

Oh, I thought you had got an interview from Tyler already. It is definitely the most selective Texas school post interview. Getting an interview here is 7% and then to get accepted after an interview is 14% or slightly higher since 40 is matriculants not acceptances.

I am very interested, when the term "holistic review" is thrown around. What does it really look like? Let's say someone won a Nobel laureate but got an under 500 MCAT. I imagine the Texas match forces schools to really dig for the right match between student and school. When a candidate is considered a good candidate, I would think it means good for the school and may not be or may be for other schools. Ultimately, you as the applicant and the ADCOM will both sniff each other out and discover if you are both a fit for eachother and not just a filler school application nor a filler candidate but both proper for eachother.

I think that is where the secondary comes into play. If I recall correctly this school had a lot of 500 words essays with super diverse subjects, so there is no chance you can copy paste other essays to this school in particular.

Interview invite!

Direct ties to east texas (grew up there). LizzyM 75. Secondary completed on July 2.

Thank you! I had a retake lol, previously had a 4.0/508 (with a 126 B/B). Also reflecting on it, my writing was not super great.

Hitting 520 (I am guessing) is a pretty big improvement. You should probably hit most of the interviews this cycle.

If they're a male it seems to be a huge disadvantage (kidding... I think?) 75% and 80% women in their first two classes.

A friend of mine that attends the school said the admissions committee wanted to do acceptances race/gender blind, so they only looked at the applicant file and their interview feedback. It's an interesting result for sure. Maybe this year will be 90% women.

Yeah male coincidentally (maybe not?)

Edit: I'll also add an interesting tidbit from their reapp seminar for those that are wondering how academics are evaluated (if they don't see MCAT etc in their selection process), they mentioned that your MCAT and GPA go on a sliding scale that together reflect your academic preparedness.

I'm imagining the admissions committee just plugging everyone in to the LizzyM calculator one by one

I suspect Tyler likes to reinterview reapplicants quickly.

I had an interview with UT Tyler last cycle and my secondary was submitted on 6/15 (direct ties this cycle) and I haven't heard anything so hopefully they are just waiting for my new mcat 🙂
